Jeremiah Wears a Yoke
1In the beginning of the reign of Jehoiakim son of Josiah, king of Judah, came this word to Jeremiah from Adonai, saying—
2thus says Adonai to me—“Make straps and yoke-bars, and put them on your neck.
3Then send such to the king of Edom, to the king of Moab, to the king of Ammon’s children, to the king of Tyre and to the king of Zidon, by the hand of messengers that come to Jerusalem to King Zedekiah of Judah.
4Charge them to their masters, saying, thus says Adonai-Tzva’ot, the God of Israel, thus will you say to your masters:
5‘I have made the earth, mankind and beast which are on the face of the earth, by My great power and by My outstretched arm—and I give it to whom it seems right to Me.
6So now I have given all these lands into the hand of King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon, My servant. I have even given the beasts of the field to serve him.
7All the nations will serve him—and his son, and his grandson—until the time of his own land comes, and then many nations and great kings will make him their slave.’
8“Now it will be, that the nation or the kingdom which will not serve the same King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon, and will not put their neck under the yoke of the king of Babylon, that nation I will punish with the sword, with famine, and with pestilence,” declares Adonai, “until I have destroyed it by his hand.
9But as for you, do not listen to your prophets, your diviners, your dreams, your soothsayers, or your sorcerers, who speak to you, saying, ‘You will not serve the king of Babylon.’
10For they prophesy a lie to you, in order to remove you far from your land, so that I would drive you out and you would perish.
11“But the nation that will bring their neck under the yoke of the king of Babylon and serve him, that nation I will let remain in its land, and they will till it and dwell in it.” It is a declaration of Adonai.
12Then I spoke to King Zedekiah of Judah with all these same words, saying: “Put your necks under the yoke of the king of Babylon, serve him and his people—and live.
13Why should you die—you and your people—by the sword, by famine, or by pestilence, as Adonai has spoken against the nation that will not serve the king of Babylon?
14Do not listen to the words of the prophets who speak to you, saying, ‘You will not serve the king of Babylon,’ for they prophesy a lie to you.”
15“For I have not sent them,” says Adonai, “and they prophesy falsely in My Name, with the result that I will drive you out, and that you will perish—you and the prophets that prophesy to you.”
16Then I spoke to the kohanim and to all this people, saying, thus says Adonai: “Do not listen to the words of your prophets who prophesy to you, saying: ‘See, the vessels of Adonai’s House will now shortly be brought back from Babylon’—for they prophesy a lie to you.
17Do not listen to them. Serve the king of Babylon, and live. Why should this city become a ruin?
18But if they are prophets, and if the word of Adonai is with them, let them now make intercession to Adonai-Tzva’ot, that the vessels that are left in the House of Adonai, in the palace of the king of Judah, and in Jerusalem, would not go to Babylon.”
19For thus says Adonai-Tzva’ot concerning the pillars, the sea, the bases, and the rest of the vessels that remain in this city,
20which King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon has not taken, when he carried away captive Jeconiah son of Jehoiakim, king of Judah, from Jerusalem to Babylon, along with all the nobles of Judah and Jerusalem,
21yes, thus says Adonai-Tzva’ot, the God of Israel, concerning the vessels that remain in the House of Adonai, in the house of the king of Judah and at Jerusalem:
22“They will be brought to Babylon, and there will they be until the day that I take note of them”—it is a declaration of Adonai—“and bring them up and restore them to this place.”

Jeremiah’s Conflict with False Prophets
1Yahweh spoke these words to Jeremiah at the beginning of the reign of Zedekiah # 27:1 The Masoretic Text has “Jehoiakim.” This was possibly a scribal error due to a miscopy of 26:1. son of Josiah, king of Judah. # 27:1 The time frame of this prophecy is about 594 BC. The Babylonians had taken the first captives from Jerusalem and established Zedekiah as their puppet king. Jeremiah prophesied that the only hope of the people was to submit themselves to the “yoke” of Babylonian rule. The seventy years of captivity points ahead to the seventy weeks of Daniel’s prophecy (see Dan. 9:24–27). 2Yahweh said to me: “Make a harness, attach it to the wooden bars of a yoke, and put them on your neck. # 27:2 Jeremiah was the “ox” of the Lord who was patient, submissive, a burden bearer, and an intercessor, and who was willing to be the sacrifice of Yahweh. Jeremiah had already bent his “neck [will]” to the harness and yoke of the Lord. 3The ambassadors of the kings of Edom, Moab, Ammon, Tyre, and Sidon are in Jerusalem to see Zedekiah king of Judah. Tell them, 4‘Here is a message for your kings. The Commander of Angel Armies, the God of Israel, commands you to deliver this message to them:
5“ ‘ “I am the one who made the earth, every person, and every animal in the world by my great strength # 27:5 Or “by my outstretched arm [a symbol of strength].” and by my mighty power, and I can give it to whomever I please. 6Now I have given all your countries to my servant, King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon. # 27:6 Nebuchadnezzar was the “golden head” mentioned in Dan. 2:31–45. I have even given him the wild animals to serve him. 7All nations will serve him, his son, and his grandson # 27:7 The grandson of Nebuchadnezzar was King Belshazzar, the last Babylonian king to rule before the Persians conquered their kingdom. —until the time of the fall of his own kingdom comes, when other nations and great kings will make him their servant. 8The nation or kingdom that refuses to submit to King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon and does not put its neck into the harness of the yoke to serve the king, I will punish,” declares Yahweh. “I will punish it with the sword, food shortages, and pestilence until I have let Nebuchadnezzar completely destroy it.
9“ ‘ “Do not listen to your prophets; they are false. Do not listen to your fortune tellers, dream interpreters, mediums, sorcerers, and magicians who say to you, ‘The king of Babylon will not conquer you.’ 10They are prophesying lies to you; do not believe them! They open the door for your enemies to take you away. I will drive you out of your land, and you will perish. 11But the nation that harnesses herself to the yoke of the king of Babylon and serves him, I will allow her to live and farm her land,” declares Yahweh.’ ”
12I, Jeremiah, also delivered a similar message to King Zedekiah of Judah: “You must harness yourself to the yoke of the king of Babylon; serve him and his people, and you will live. 13Otherwise you will die together with your people by sword, food shortages, and pestilence, as Yahweh has threatened any nation that does not serve the king of Babylon. 14Pay no attention to the words of the prophets who say to you, ‘Do not serve the king of Babylon,’ for they prophesy lies to you. 15‘I have not sent them,’ declares Yahweh. ‘They lie when they affirm that they are speaking in my name. If you listen to them, I will drive you out. You will be destroyed—you and the prophets who are lying to you.’ ”
16And to the priests and to all the people I said: “Do not listen to the words of the prophets who lie to you, saying, ‘The holy vessels plundered from Yahweh’s temple are going to be brought back to you soon from Babylon,’ for they prophesy falsely to you, declares Yahweh. 17Do not listen to them! Serve the king of Babylon and live a long life. Why should Jerusalem be destroyed? 18If they are true prophets and the word of Yahweh is in them, let them intercede with Yahweh, the Commander of Angel Armies, so that the furnishings that are still left in Yahweh’s temple, in the king’s palace, and in Jerusalem may not be carried off to Babylon. 19That’s because Yahweh, Commander of Angel Armies, has already spoken about the temple furnishings that remain in the city—the bronze pillars, # 27:19 See 1 Kings 7:15–39. the large bronze basin, the stands, and all the other bowls and chalices. 20Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon didn’t take them away when he took captive Jeconiah son of Jehoiakim to Babylon along with all the leaders of Judah and Jerusalem. 21For the God of Israel, Yahweh, Commander of Angel Armies, said that the furnishings left behind in Yahweh’s temple, in the royal palace, and in Jerusalem 22will be carried off to Babylon, # 27:22 See 2 Kings 24:10–17. and ‘they will stay there until the day that I restore them and bring them back where they belong,’ declares Yahweh.”
