Exodus 40

Setting up the Tabernacle
1Then Adonai spoke to Moses saying,
2“On the first day of the first month, you will set up the Tabernacle of the Tent of Meeting.
3You are to put the Ark of the Testimony there, and screen off the Ark with the curtain.
4Then bring in the table, and set in order the bread that is on it. Bring in the menorah and light its lamps.
5Set the golden incense altar in front of the Ark of the Testimony, and hang the curtain over the entrance of the Tabernacle.
6“Set the altar of burnt offering before the entrance of the Tabernacle, the Tent of Meeting.
7Set up the basin between the Tent of Meeting and the altar, and put water in it.
8Set up the courtyard all around, and hang the curtain of the gate of the courtyard.
9“Take the anointing oil and anoint the Tabernacle, and everything within it, and consecrate it, along with all of its furnishings, and it will be holy.
10Also you are to anoint the altar of burnt offering with all of its utensils and consecrate the altar. The altar will be most holy.
11Then you are to anoint the basin along with its base and sanctify it.
12“Bring Aaron and his sons to the entrance of the Tent of Meeting, and wash them with water.
13Put the holy garments on Aaron, anoint him and consecrate him, so that he may minister to Me as a kohen.
14Also bring his sons and put tunics upon them.
15You are to anoint them, as you did their father, so that they too may minister to Me as kohanim. Their anointing will be for an everlasting priesthood throughout their generations.”
16Moses did so, just as Adonai had commanded him.
17Now it happened during the first month of the second year, on the first day of the month, the Tabernacle was raised up.
18Moses raised the Tabernacle, and laid its bases, set up the framework of boards, put in the crossbars and set up its pillars.
19Then he spread the tent over the Tabernacle and put the covering of the tent on it, just as Adonai had commanded Moses.
20He placed the Testimony into the Ark, set the poles on the Ark, and put the atonement cover on top of the Ark.
21He brought the Ark into the Tabernacle, set up the curtain as a screen, and screened off the Ark of the Testimony, just as Adonai had commanded Moses.
22Then he set up the table inside the Tent of Meeting, on the side of the Tabernacle northward, outside the curtain.
23He set a row of bread in order upon it before Adonai, just as Adonai had commanded Moses.
24Then he placed the menorah in the Tent of Meeting, over against the table, on the south side of the Tabernacle.
25Then he lit the lamps before Adonai, just as Adonai had commanded Moses.
26Next he placed the golden altar in the Tent of Meeting before the curtain,
27and he burned sweet spices of incense there, just as Adonai had commanded Moses.
28He hung the curtain over the entrance of the Tabernacle.
29Then he set the altar of burnt offering at the entrance of the Tabernacle, the Tent of Meeting, and offered upon it the burnt offering and the grain offering, just as Adonai had commanded Moses.
30Next he set up the basin between the Tent of Meeting and the altar and put water in it for washing,
31so that Moses, Aaron and his sons could wash their hands and their feet there.
32When they went into the Tent of Meeting and when they came near to the altar, they washed, just as Adonai had commanded Moses.
33He set up the courtyard around the Tabernacle and the altar and set up the screen at the gate of the courtyard. So Moses finished the work.
Glory Fills the Tabernacle
34Then the cloud covered the Tent of Meeting, and the glory of Adonai filled the Tabernacle.
35Moses was unable to enter into the Tent of Meeting, because the cloud resided there and the glory of Adonai filled the Tabernacle.
36Now whenever the cloud was taken up from over the Tabernacle, Bnei-Yisrael went onward, throughout all their journeys.
37But if the cloud was not taken up, then they did not move out until the day that it was.
38For the cloud of Adonai was on the Tabernacle by day and a fire was there by night, in the sight of all the house of Israel throughout all their journeys.

The Lord's Tent Is Set Up
1The Lord said to Moses:
2Set up my tent on the first day of the year#40.2 first day of the year: See the note at 12.2. 3and put the chest with the Ten Commandments behind the inside curtain.#40.3 inside curtain: Separating the holy place from the most holy place. 4Bring in the table and set on it those things that are made for it. Also bring in the lampstand and attach the lamps to it. 5Then place the gold altar of incense in front of the sacred chest and hang a curtain at the entrance to the tent. 6Set the altar for burning sacrifices in front of the entrance to my tent. 7Put the large bronze bowl between the tent and the altar and fill the bowl with water. 8Surround the tent and the altar with the wall of curtains and hang the curtain that was made for the entrance.
9Use the sacred olive oil to dedicate to me the tent and everything in it. 10Do the same thing with the altar for offering sacrifices and its equipment 11and with the bowl and its stand. 12Bring Aaron and his sons to the entrance of the tent and tell them to wash themselves. 13Dress Aaron in the priestly clothes, then use the sacred olive oil to ordain him and dedicate him to me as my priest. 14Put the priestly robes on Aaron's sons 15and ordain them in the same way, so they and their descendants will always be my priests.
16Moses followed the Lord's instructions. 17And on the first day of the first month#40.17 first month: See the note at 12.2. of the second year, the sacred tent was set up. 18The posts, stands, and framework were put in place, 19then the two layers of coverings were hung over them. 20The stones with the Ten Commandments written on them were stored in the sacred chest, the place of mercy#40.20 place of mercy: See the note at 26.34. was put on top of it, and the carrying poles were attached. 21The chest was brought into the tent and set behind the curtain in the most holy place. These things were done exactly as the Lord had commanded Moses.
22The table for the sacred bread was put along the north wall of the holy place, 23after which the bread was set on the table. 24The lampstand was put along the south wall, 25then the lamps were attached to it there in the presence of the Lord. 26The gold incense altar was set up in front of the curtain, 27and sweet-smelling incense was burned on it. These things were done exactly as the Lord had commanded Moses.
28The curtain was hung at the entrance to the sacred tent. 29Then the altar for offering sacrifices was put in front of the tent, and animal sacrifices and gifts of grain were offered there. 30The large bronze bowl was placed between the altar and the entrance to the tent. It was filled with water, 31then Moses and Aaron, together with Aaron's sons, washed their hands and feet. 32In fact, they washed each time before entering the tent or offering sacrifices at the altar. These things were done exactly as the Lord had commanded Moses.
33Finally, Moses had the curtains hung around the courtyard and at the entrance.
The Glory of the Lord
34 #
1 K 8.10,11; Is 6.4; Ez 43.4,5; Rev 15.8. Suddenly the sacred tent was covered by a thick cloud and filled with the glory of the Lord. 35And so, Moses could not enter the tent. 36Whenever the cloud moved from the tent, the people would break camp and follow; 37then they would set up camp and stay there, until it moved again. 38No matter where the people traveled, the Lord was with them. Each day his cloud was over the tent, and each night a fire could be seen in the cloud.
