Amos 4

Word for Worldly Women
1Hear this word, you cows of Bashan, who are on Samaria’s hill, who oppress the poor, who crush the needy, who say to their masters: “Bring, so we may drink.”
2My Lord Adonai has sworn by His holiness: “Behold, days are coming upon you when he will drag you away with meat-hooks, the last of you with fishhooks.
3You will go out through breaches— each woman straight ahead, and you will be cast to Harmon.” It is the declaration of Adonai.
4“Come to Bethel and transgress, in Gilgal multiply transgression. Every morning bring your sacrifices and your tithes every three days.
5Offer up hametz as a thank offering, call out about freewill offerings— boast about it! For so you love to do, Bnei-Yisrael.” It is the declaration of my Lord Adonai.
Yet You Have Not Returned
6“So also, I myself have given you cleanness of teeth in all your cities and lack of bread in all your places— yet you have not returned to Me,” declares Adonai.
7“Also I myself have withheld from you the rain—when three months remain to the harvest, I caused it to rain on one city, while on another city I sent no rain; one piece of ground would get rain, while the portion not rained on would wither.
8So two or three cities go staggering to one city to drink water, but would not be satisfied— yet you have not returned to Me,” declares Adonai.
9“I struck you with blight and mildew. Your many gardens and vineyards, your fig-trees and olive trees the locust has devoured— yet you have not returned to Me,” declares Adonai.
10“I sent among you a plague in the manner of Egypt. I slew your young men by the sword, with your chariot-horses in captivity. I made the stench of your camp rise up even to your own nostrils— yet you have not returned to Me,” declares Adonai.
11I overthrew some of you as God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah. You became like a firebrand snatched from a blaze— yet you have not returned to Me,” declares Adonai.
Prepare to Meet Your God
12“Therefore here is what I will do to you, Israel. Because I will do this to you, prepare to meet your God, Israel!”
13For behold! He who forms mountains who creates the wind, who declares His thoughts to man, who makes dawn out of darkness, who walks above the heights of the earth—His Name is Adonai Elohei-Tzva’ot!

Second Summons
1Hear this word, you cows of Bashan,#Cows of Bashan: the pampered women of Samaria; Bashan was a region east of the Sea of Galilee, famous for its rich pasture and fattened herds.
who live on the mount of Samaria:
Who oppress the destitute
and abuse the needy;
Who say to your husbands,
“Bring us a drink!”
2The Lord God has sworn by his holiness:
Truly days are coming upon you
when they shall drag you away with ropes,
your children with fishhooks;
3You shall go out through the breached walls
one in front of the other,
And you shall be exiled to Harmon—#Harmon: or perhaps “Mount Mon”; an unidentified site, probably far to the north of Israel, under the control of Assyria.
oracle of the Lord.
4Come to Bethel#Come to Bethel: Amos’s invitation to the people to come and “sin” at two of the major religious centers in Samaria is sarcastic. His point is that sacrifice and worship without justice is an abomination to the God of Israel; cf. 5:21–24. and sin,
to Gilgal and sin all the more!
Each morning bring your sacrifices,
every third day your tithes;
5Burn leavened bread as a thanksgiving sacrifice,
proclaim publicly your voluntary offerings,
For so you love to do, Israelites—
oracle of the Lord God.
6Though I made your teeth
clean of food in all your cities,
and made bread scarce in all your dwellings,
Yet you did not return to me—
oracle of the Lord.#Wis 12:2, 10.
7#Jer 14:1–6. And I withheld the rain from you
when the harvest was still three months away;
I sent rain upon one city
but not upon another;
One field was watered by rain,
but the one I did not water dried up;
8Two or three cities staggered to another to drink water
but were not satisfied;
Yet you did not return to me—
oracle of the Lord.
9I struck you with blight and mildew;
locusts devoured your gardens and vineyards,
the caterpillar consumed your fig trees and olive trees;
Yet you did not return to me—
oracle of the Lord.#Dt 28:22; Jl 1:4; 2:25; Hg 2:17.
10I sent upon you pestilence like that of Egypt;#Dt 7:15; 28:27.
with the sword I killed your young men and your captured horses,
and to your nostrils I brought the stench of your camps;
Yet you did not return to me—
oracle of the Lord.
11I overthrew you
as when God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah;
you were like a brand plucked from the fire,#Gn 19:24–25; Zec 3:2.
Yet you did not return to me—
oracle of the Lord.
12Therefore thus I will do to you,#Therefore thus I will do to you: this climax of vv. 6–12, announcing the sentence the Lord intends to pass on Israel, is open-ended. Israel:
and since I will deal thus with you,
prepare to meet your God, O Israel!
13The one who forms mountains and creates winds,
and declares to mortals their thoughts;
Who makes dawn into darkness
and strides upon the heights of the earth,
the Lord, the God of hosts, is his name!
