Acts 2
2
The Ruach Fills the Disciples
1When the day of Shavuot had come, they were all together in one place.
2Suddenly there came from heaven a sound like a mighty rushing wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting.
3And tongues like fire spreading out appeared to them and settled on each one of them.
4They were all filled with the Ruach ha-Kodesh and began to speak in other tongues as the Ruach enabled them to speak out.
5Now Jewish people were staying in Jerusalem, devout men from every nation under heaven.
6And when this sound came, the crowd gathered. They were bewildered, because each was hearing them speaking in his own language.
7And they were amazed and astonished, saying, “All these who are speaking—aren’t they Galileans?
8How is it that we each hear our own birth language?
9Parthians and Medes and Elamites and those living in Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia,
10Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and parts of Libya toward Cyrene, and visitors from Rome
11(both Jewish people and proselytes), Cretans and Arabs—we hear them declaring in our own tongues the mighty deeds of God!”
12And they were all amazed and perplexed, saying to each other, “What does this mean?”
13Others, poking fun, were saying, “They are full of sweet new wine!”
Peter Speaks to the Shavuot Crowd
14But Peter, standing with the Eleven, raised his voice and addressed them: “Fellow Judeans and all who are staying in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and pay attention to my words.
15These men are not drunk, as you suppose—for it’s only the third hour of the day!
16But this is what was spoken about through the prophet Joel:
17‘And it shall be in the last days,’ says God, ‘that I will pour out My Ruach on all flesh. Your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams.
18Even on My slaves, male and female, I will pour out My Ruach in those days, and they shall prophesy.
19And I will give wonders in the sky above and signs on the earth beneath— blood, and fire, and smoky vapor.
20The sun shall be turned to darkness and the moon to blood before the great and glorious Day of Adonai comes.
21And it shall be that everyone who calls on the name of Adonai shall be saved.’
22“Men of Israel, hear these words! Yeshua ha-Natzrati—a Man authenticated to you by God with mighty deeds and wonders and signs God performed through Him in your midst, as you yourselves know—
23this Yeshua, given over by God’s predetermined plan and foreknowledge, nailed to the cross by the hand of lawless men, you killed.
24But God raised Him up, releasing Him from the pains of death, since it was impossible for Him to be held by it.
25For David says about Him, ‘I saw Adonai always before me, for He is at my right hand so that I might not be shaken.
26Therefore my heart was glad and my tongue rejoiced; moreover, my body also will live in hope,
27because You will not abandon my soul to Sheol or let Your Holy One see decay.
28You have made known to me the paths of life; You will fill me with joy in Your presence.’
29“Brothers, I can confidently tell you that the patriarch David died and was buried—his tomb is with us to this day.
30So because he was a prophet and knew God had sworn with an oath to him to seat one of his descendants on his throne,
31David saw beforehand and spoke of Messiah’s resurrection—that He was not abandoned to Sheol, and His body did not see decay.
32“This Yeshua God raised up—we all are witnesses!
33Therefore, being exalted to the right hand of God and receiving from the Father the promise of the Ruach ha-Kodesh, He poured out this—what you now see and hear.
34For David did not ascend into the heavens; yet he himself says, ‘Adonai said to my Lord, “Sit at my right hand,
35until I make Your enemies a footstool for Your feet.”’
36“Therefore let the whole house of Israel know for certain that God has made Him—this Yeshua whom you had crucified—both Lord and Messiah!”
Teshuvah—Thousands Immersed
37Now when they heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the rest of the emissaries, “Fellow brethren, what shall we do?”
38Peter said to them, “Repent, and let each of you be immersed in the name of Messiah Yeshua for the removal of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Ruach ha-Kodesh.
39For the promise is for you and your children, and for all who are far away—as many as Adonai our God calls to Himself.”
40With many other words he warned them and kept urging them, saying, “Save yourselves from this twisted generation!”
41So those who received his message were immersed, and that day about three thousand souls were added.
New Covenant Community Begins
42They were devoting themselves to the teaching of the emissaries and to fellowship, to breaking bread and to prayers.
43Fear lay upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were happening through the emissaries.
44And all who believed were together, having everything in common.
45They began selling their property and possessions and sharing them with all, as any had need.
46Day by day they continued with one mind, spending time at the Temple and breaking bread from house to house. They were sharing meals with gladness and sincerity of heart,
47praising God and having favor with all the people. And every day the Lord was adding to their number those being saved.

The Coming of the Holy Spirit
1 #
Lev 23.15–21; Deut 16.9–11 When the day of Pentecost came, all the believers were gathered together in one place. 2Suddenly there was a noise from the sky which sounded like a strong wind blowing, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3Then they saw what looked like tongues of fire which spread out and touched each person there. 4They were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to talk in other languages, as the Spirit enabled them to speak.
5There were Jews living in Jerusalem, religious people who had come from every country in the world. 6When they heard this noise, a large crowd gathered. They were all excited, because each one of them heard the believers speaking in his or her own language. 7In amazement and wonder they exclaimed, “These people who are talking like this are Galileans! 8How is it, then, that all of us hear them speaking in our own native languages? 9We are from Parthia, Media, and Elam; from Mesopotamia, Judea, and Cappadocia; from Pontus and Asia, 10from Phrygia and Pamphylia, from Egypt and the regions of Libya near Cyrene. Some of us are from Rome, 11both Jews and Gentiles converted to Judaism, and some of us are from Crete and Arabia — yet all of us hear them speaking in our own languages about the great things that God has done!” 12Amazed and confused, they kept asking each other, “What does this mean?”
13But others made fun of the believers, saying, “These people are drunk!”
Peter's Message
14Then Peter stood up with the other eleven apostles and in a loud voice began to speak to the crowd: “Fellow-Jews and all of you who live in Jerusalem, listen to me and let me tell you what this means. 15These people are not drunk, as you suppose; it is only nine o'clock in the morning. 16Instead, this is what the prophet Joel spoke about:
17 #
Joel 2.28–32 (LXX) ‘This is what I will do in the last days, God says:
I will pour out my Spirit on everyone.
Your sons and daughters will proclaim my message;
your young men will see visions,
and your old men will have dreams.
18Yes, even on my servants, both men and women,
I will pour out my Spirit in those days,
and they will proclaim my message.
19I will perform miracles in the sky above
and wonders on the earth below.
There will be blood, fire, and thick smoke;
20the sun will be darkened,
and the moon will turn red as blood,
before the great and glorious Day of the Lord comes.
21And then, whoever calls out to the Lord for help will be saved.’
22“Listen to these words, fellow-Israelites! Jesus of Nazareth was a man whose divine authority was clearly proven to you by all the miracles and wonders which God performed through him. You yourselves know this, for it happened here among you. 23#Mt 27.35; Mk 15.24; Lk 23.33; Jn 19.18In accordance with his own plan God had already decided that Jesus would be handed over to you; and you killed him by letting sinful men crucify him. 24#Mt 28.5–6; Mk 16.6; Lk 24.5But God raised him from death, setting him free from its power, because it was impossible that death should hold him prisoner. 25#Ps 16.8–11 (LXX)For David said about him:
‘I saw the Lord before me at all times;
he is near me, and I will not be troubled.
26And so I am filled with gladness,
and my words are full of joy.
And I, mortal though I am,
will rest assured in hope,
27because you will not abandon me in the world of the dead;
you will not allow your faithful servant to rot in the grave.
28You have shown me the paths that lead to life,
and your presence will fill me with joy.’
29“My fellow-Israelites, I must speak to you plainly about our famous ancestor King David. He died and was buried, and his grave is here with us to this very day. 30#Ps 132.11; 2 Sam 7.12–13He was a prophet, and he knew what God had promised him: God had made a vow that he would make one of David's descendants a king, just as David was. 31David saw what God was going to do in the future, and so he spoke about the resurrection of the Messiah when he said:
‘He was not abandoned in the world of the dead;
his body did not rot in the grave.’
32God has raised this very Jesus from death, and we are all witnesses to this fact. 33He has been raised to the right-hand side of God, his Father, and has received from him the Holy Spirit, as he had promised. What you now see and hear is his gift that he has poured out on us. 34#Ps 110.1For it was not David who went up into heaven; rather he said:
‘The Lord said to my Lord:
Sit here at my right
35until I put your enemies as a footstool under your feet.’
36“All the people of Israel, then, are to know for sure that this Jesus, whom you crucified, is the one that God has made Lord and Messiah!”
37When the people heard this, they were deeply troubled and said to Peter and the other apostles, “What shall we do, brothers?”
38Peter said to them, “Each one of you must turn away from your sins and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ, so that your sins will be forgiven; and you will receive God's gift, the Holy Spirit. 39For God's promise was made to you and your children, and to all who are far away — all whom the Lord our God calls to himself.”
40Peter made his appeal to them and with many other words he urged them, saying, “Save yourselves from the punishment coming on this wicked people!” 41Many of them believed his message and were baptized, and about 3,000 people were added to the group that day. 42They spent their time in learning from the apostles, taking part in the fellowship, and sharing in the fellowship meals and the prayers.
Life among the Believers
43Many miracles and wonders were being done through the apostles, and everyone was filled with awe. 44#Acts 4.32–35All the believers continued together in close fellowship and shared their belongings with one another. 45They would sell their property and possessions, and distribute the money among all, according to what each one needed. 46Day after day they met as a group in the Temple, and they had their meals together in their homes, eating with glad and humble hearts, 47praising God, and enjoying the good will of all the people. And every day the Lord added to their group those who were being saved.
