Covenant Loyalty to Mephibosheth
Then David inquired, “Is there anyone still left from the house of Saul, so that I may show him kindness for Jonathan’s sake?”
Now there was a servant from Saul’s house whose name was Ziba, so they summoned him to David. The king asked him, “Are you Ziba?” “Your servant,” he said.
The king asked him, “Is there still anyone from the house of Saul to whom I may show the kindness of God?” “There is still a son of Jonathan,” Ziba said to the king, “with crippled legs.”
“Where is he?” the king said to him. Ziba said to the king, “He’s there, in the house of Machir son of Ammiel, in Lo-debar.”
So King David sent word and brought him from the house of Machir son of Ammiel, from Lo-debar.
Then Mephibosheth, son of Jonathan son of Saul, came to David, fell on his face and prostrated himself. “Mephibosheth!” David said. “Behold your servant!” he answered. “Don’t be afraid,”
David said to him, “for I will surely show you kindness for the sake of your father Jonathan. I will restore to you all the land of your grandfather Saul, and you will always eat bread at my table.”
Then he bowed down and said, “What is your servant, that you should turn to look at such a dead dog like me?”
Then the king summoned Ziba, Saul’s servant, and said to him, “All that belonged to Saul and to all his household I have given to your master’s son.
So you, you and your sons and your servants will till the land for him, and you will bring in the yield so that your master’s son may have food to eat. But Mephibosheth your master’s son will always eat bread at my table.” Now Ziba had 15 sons and 20 servants.
Then Ziba said to the king, “According to all that my lord the king commands his servant, so will your servant do.” Thus Mephibosheth used to eat at the table just like one of the king’s sons.
Mephibosheth had a young son, whose name was Mica. All the members of Ziba’s household were servants to Mephibosheth.
But Mephibosheth lived in Jerusalem, for he ate at the king’s table regularly, though he was crippled in both his legs.

David and Meribbaal. 1David asked, “Is there any survivor of Saul’s house to whom I may show kindness for the sake of Jonathan?”#2 Sm 21:7; 1 Sm 18:1–4; 20:8–10, 15–17, 42. 2Now there was an official of the house of Saul named Ziba. He was summoned to David, and the king asked him, “Are you Ziba?” He replied, “Your servant.”#2 Sm 16:1–4; 19:27. 3Then the king asked, “Is there any survivor of Saul’s house to whom I may show God’s kindness?” Ziba answered the king, “There is still Jonathan’s son, the one whose feet are crippled.”#2 Sm 4:4. 4The king asked him, “Where is he?” and Ziba answered the king, “He is in the house of Machir, son of Ammiel, in Lodebar.”#2 Sm 17:27. 5So King David sent for him and had him brought from the house of Machir, son of Ammiel, from Lodebar. 6When Meribbaal, son of Jonathan, son of Saul, came to David, he fell face down in homage. David said, “Meribbaal,” and he answered, “Your servant.” 7“Do not be afraid,” David said to him, “I will surely be kind to you for the sake of Jonathan your father. I will restore to you all the lands of Saul your grandfather, and you shall eat at my table always.” 8Bowing low, he answered, “What am I, your servant, that you should pay attention to a dead dog like me?”#1 Sm 24:15. 9The king then called Ziba, Saul’s attendant, and said to him: “All that belonged to Saul and to his entire house, I am giving to your lord’s son. 10You and your sons and servants must till the land for him. You shall bring in the produce, which shall be food for your lord’s household to eat. But Meribbaal, your lord’s son, shall always eat at my table.” Now Ziba had fifteen sons and twenty servants. 11Ziba answered the king, “Whatever my lord the king commands his servant, so shall your servant do.” And so Meribbaal ate at David’s table like one of the king’s sons.#2 Sm 19:29. 12Meribbaal had a young son whose name was Mica; and all the tenants of Ziba’s household worked for Meribbaal.#1 Chr 8:34. 13But Meribbaal lived in Jerusalem, because he always ate at the king’s table. He was lame in both feet.#2 Sm 21:7.
