Adonai’s Promise to David
1Now it came about when the king lived in his palace and Adonai had granted him rest from all his enemies around him,
2that the king said to the prophet Nathan, “See now, I am living in a house of cedar, yet the ark of God remains within curtains.”
3“Go, do all that is in your heart,” Nathan said to the king, “for Adonai is with you.”
4But it came to pass the same night that the word of Adonai came to Nathan saying:
5“Go, tell My servant David: Thus says Adonai: Are you to build Me a house for Me to dwell in?
6Since the day that I brought up the children of Israel from Egypt to this day I have not dwelt in a house, but have been moving about in a tent, even in a tabernacle.
7In all My journeying among all the children of Israel, did I ever speak a word to any of the tribes of Israel, whom I commanded to shepherd My people Israel, saying, ‘Why have you not built Me a house of cedar?’
8So now, thus you shall say to My servant David: Thus says Adonai-Tzva’ot: I took you from the pasture, from following the sheep, to be ruler over My people, over Israel.
9I have been with you wherever you went, and have cut off all your enemies from before you; and I will make your name as great as the greatest on earth.
10I will also set up a place for My people Israel and will plant them, so they may dwell in their own place and not be disturbed again. Nor will the children of wickedness afflict them anymore as in the past,
11since the day that I commanded judges to be over My people Israel. So I will give you rest from all your enemies. “Moreover, Adonai declares to you that Adonai will make a house for you.
12When your days are done and you sleep with your fathers, I will raise up your seed, who will come forth from you after you, and I will establish his kingdom.
13He will build a house for My Name, and I will establish his royal throne forever.
14I will be a father to him, and he will be a son to Me. If he commits iniquity, I will correct him with the rod of men and with the strokes from sons of men.
15Yet My lovingkindness will not be withdrawn from him as I withdrew it from Saul, whom I removed from before you.
16So your house and your kingship will be secure forever before you; your throne will be established forever.”
17Just so Nathan spoke all these words and all this vision to David.
18Then King David went in and sat before Adonai and said, “Who am I, my Lord Adonai, and what is my family, that You have brought me this far?
19Yet this was a small thing in Your eyes, my Lord Adonai—for You have spoken also of Your servant’s house for the distant future. This is a revelation for humanity, my Lord Adonai.
20What more can David add in speaking to You? For You already know Your servant, my Lord Adonai.
21For the sake of Your word and according to Your own heart, You have done everything great, revealing this to Your servant.
22Therefore You are great, my Lord Adonai! For there is none like You, and there is no other God besides You, as we all have heard with our ears.
23What one nation on earth is like Your people, like Israel, whom God went to redeem for Himself as a people, to make for Himself a Name, to do for You a great thing and awesome deeds for Your land, before Your people whom You redeemed for Yourself from Egypt—driving out nations and their gods?
24So You established for Yourself Your people Israel as Your very own people forever, and You, Adonai, have become their God.
25“So now, my Lord Adonai, confirm the word that You have spoken concerning Your servant and his house forever, and do as You have promised.
26Let Your Name be magnified forever by saying, ‘Adonai-Tzva’ot is God over Israel!’ May the house of Your servant David be established before You.
27For You, Adonai-Tzva’ot God of Israel, have made a revelation to Your servant saying, ‘I will build you a house.’ Therefore Your servant has found his heart to pray this prayer to You.
28So now, my Lord Adonai, You alone are God, and Your words are truth, and You have promised Your servant this good thing.
29So now let it please You to bless the house of Your servant, to continue forever before You. For You, my Lord Adonai, have spoken, and with Your blessing Your servant’s house will be blessed forever.”

The Oracle of Nathan. 1#1 Chr 17:1–27. After the king had taken up residence in his house, and the Lord had given him rest from his enemies on every side,#Dt 12:10; 25:19; 1 Kgs 5:4. 2the king said to Nathan the prophet, “Here I am living in a house of cedar, but the ark of God dwells in a tent!”#Ex 39:32. 3Nathan answered the king, “Whatever is in your heart, go and do, for the Lord is with you.”#Ps 132:1–5. 4But that same night the word of the Lord came to Nathan: 5Go and tell David my servant, Thus says the Lord: Is it you who would build me a house to dwell in?#1 Kgs 5:3; 8:16, 27; 1 Chr 22:8; 28:3; Is 66:1; Acts 7:48–49. 6I have never dwelt in a house from the day I brought Israel up from Egypt to this day, but I have been going about in a tent or a tabernacle. 7As long as I have wandered about among the Israelites, did I ever say a word to any of the judges whom I commanded to shepherd my people Israel: Why have you not built me a house of cedar?
8Now then, speak thus to my servant David, Thus says the Lord of hosts:#The message Nathan delivers to David, called the Dynastic Oracle, is prompted by David’s intention to build a house (i.e., a temple) for the Lord, like David’s own house (i.e., palace) of cedar. David is told, in effect, not to bother building a house for the Lord; rather, the Lord will make a house for him—a dynasty, the House of David. Not only will he have descendants (v. 12) who will sit upon the throne of Israel (v. 13), their rule will last forever (vv. 13, 16); and even if they transgress the Lord’s commands, the line of David will never be removed from kingship as Saul was (cf. 1 Sm 13; 15). The oracle establishes the Davidic king as standing in relationship to the Lord as a son to a father (v. 14; cf. Ps 2:7; 89:27). The Dynastic Oracle, with cognate texts in the Scriptures, is the basis for Jewish expectations of an anointed king (1 Sm 12:3, 5), son of David (Mt 21:9); cf. Acts 2:30; Heb 1:5. I took you from the pasture, from following the flock, to become ruler over my people Israel.#1 Sm 16:13; 17:15–20; Ps 78:70–71; Am 7:14–15. 9I was with you wherever you went, and I cut down all your enemies before you. And I will make your name like that of the greatest on earth.#Ps 89:27. 10I will assign a place for my people Israel and I will plant them in it to dwell there; they will never again be disturbed, nor shall the wicked ever again oppress them, as they did at the beginning, 11and from the day when I appointed judges over my people Israel. I will give you rest from all your enemies. Moreover, the Lord also declares to you that the Lord will make a house for you:#2 Sm 23:5; 1 Kgs 2:4–24. 12#1 Kgs 5:19; 8:19; 1 Chr 22:10; 2 Chr 7:18; Ps 89:4, 26–29, 36–37; Lk 1:32; Heb 1:5. when your days have been completed and you rest with your ancestors, I will raise up your offspring after you, sprung from your loins, and I will establish his kingdom. 13He it is#He it is: Solomon, in the event. who shall build a house for my name, and I will establish his royal throne forever. 14I will be a father to him, and he shall be a son to me. If he does wrong, I will reprove him with a human rod and with human punishments;#Ps 2:7; 89:26; Prv 3:12. 15but I will not withdraw my favor from him as I withdrew it from Saul who was before you.#2 Sm 23:5; 1 Sm 13:14; 15:26, 28; 2 Kgs 19:34; 1 Chr 17:11–14; Ps 89:33–34. 16Your house and your kingdom are firm forever before me; your throne shall be firmly established forever.#The unconditional promise made here, and reflected in Ps 89:34–35, stands in contrast to the tradition in Ps 132:12, where the continuation of the line of David depends on their fidelity to the Lord; cf. also 1 Kgs 2:4; 6:12; 8:25. #2 Sm 23:5; Dn 2:44; 1 Mc 2:57; Mk 11:10; Lk 1:32–33; Heb 1:8. 17In accordance with all these words and this whole vision Nathan spoke to David.
David’s Thanksgiving. 18Then King David went in and sat in the Lord’s presence and said, “Who am I, Lord God, and what is my house, that you should have brought me so far?#1 Chr 17:16. 19And yet even this is too little in your sight, Lord God! For you have made a promise regarding your servant’s house reaching into the future, and giving guidance to the people, Lord God! 20What more can David say to you? You know#Know: give recognition, choose, single out: cf. Gn 18:19; Ex 33:12; Am 3:2. your servant, Lord God! 21For your servant’s sake and as you have had at heart, you have brought about this whole magnificent disclosure to your servant. 22Therefore, great are you, Lord God! There is no one like you, no God but you, as we have always heard.#Ex 15:11; Is 45:5. 23What other nation on earth is there like your people Israel? What god has ever led a nation, redeeming it as his people and making a name by great and awesome deeds, as you drove out the nations and their gods before your people, whom you redeemed for yourself from Egypt?#Dt 4:7, 34. 24#Ex 6:7; Dt 7:6; 26:17; 29:13. You have established for yourself your people Israel as your people forever, and you, Lord, have become their God. 25Now, Lord God, confirm the promise that you have spoken concerning your servant and his house forever. Bring about what you have promised 26so that your name may be forever great. People will say: ‘The Lord of hosts is God over Israel,’ when the house of your servant David is established in your presence. 27Because you, Lord of hosts, God of Israel, have revealed to your servant, ‘I will build you a house,’ your servant now finds the courage to make this prayer before you. 28Since you, Lord God, are truly God and your words are truth and you have made this generous promise to your servant,#Nm 23:19; Jn 17:17. 29do, then, bless the house of your servant, that it may be in your presence forever—since you, Lord God, have promised, and by your blessing the house of your servant shall be blessed forever.”
