1 Samuel 27

David Settles in Ziklag
1Then David said in his heart, “One day I’ll be swept away by the hand of Saul. There’s nothing better for me than to escape immediately to the land of the Philistines. Then Saul will give up searching for me in all the territories of Israel, so I’ll escape from his hand.”
2So David rose and crossed over, he and the 600 men that were with him, to Achish son of Maoch, king of Gath.
3David stayed with Achish at Gath, he and his men, every man with his household, and David with his two wives—Ahinoam of Jezreel, and Abigail of Carmel, Nabal’s widow.
4So when Saul was told that David had fled to Gath, he no longer searched for him.
5Then David said to Achish, “If now I have found favor in your eyes, let me be given a place in one of the country towns, so I may live there. Why should your servant stay in the royal city with you?”
6So Achish granted him Ziklag that day. Thus Ziklag came to belong to the kings of Judah to this day.
7The number of days that David stayed in the country of the Philistines was a year and four months.
8Now David and his men went up and raided the Geshurites, the Gizrites and the Amalekites, for those were inhabitants of the region from ancient times, as you go all the way from Shur and as far as the land of Egypt.
9David attacked the region and was leaving not a man or woman alive, and took away sheep, oxen, donkeys, camels and clothing. When he returned and came to Achish,
10Achish would ask, “Where have you raided today?” So David would reply, “Against the Negev of Judah, against the Negev of the Jerahmeelite and against the Negev of the Kenites.”
11David left no man or woman alive to bring to Gath, thinking, “Unless they should tell about us, saying: ‘So did David.’” So was his practice all the time he stayed in the country of the Philistines.
12Then Achish trusted David, saying, “He has certainly made himself abhorrent to his people Israel; therefore, he will be my vassal forever.”

I Samuel 27

David Allied with the Philistines
1And David said in his heart, “Now I shall perish someday by the hand of Saul. There is nothing better for me than that I should speedily escape to the land of the Philistines; and Saul will despair of me, to seek me anymore in any part of Israel. So I shall escape out of his hand.” 2Then David arose #Gen. 32:28; 1 Sam. 24:20and went over with the six hundred men who were with him #1 Sam. 25:13to Achish the son of Maoch, king of Gath. 3So David dwelt with Achish at Gath, he and his men, each man with his household, and David #1 Sam. 21:10; 1 Kin. 2:39with his two wives, Ahinoam the Jezreelitess, and Abigail the Carmelitess, Nabal’s widow. 4And it was told Saul that David had fled to Gath; so he sought him no more.
5Then David said to Achish, “If I have now found favor in your eyes, let them give me a place in some town in the country, that I may dwell there. For why should your servant dwell in the royal city with you?” 6So Achish gave him Ziklag that day. Therefore #1 Sam. 25:42, 43Ziklag has belonged to the kings of Judah to this day. 7Now the time that David #Josh. 15:31; 19:5; 1 Chr. 12:1; Neh. 11:28dwelt in the country of the Philistines was one full year and four months.
8And David and his men went up and raided #1 Sam. 29:3the Geshurites, #Josh. 13:2, 13the Girzites, and the #Josh. 16:10; Judg. 1:29Amalekites. For those nations were the inhabitants of the land from of old, #Ex. 17:8, 16; 1 Sam. 15:7, 8as you go to Shur, even as far as the land of Egypt. 9Whenever David attacked the land, he left neither man nor woman alive, but took away the sheep, the oxen, the donkeys, the camels, and the apparel, and returned and came to Achish. 10Then Achish would say, “Where have you made a raid today?” And David would say, “Against the southern area of Judah, or against the southern area of #Gen. 25:18; Ex. 15:22the Jerahmeelites, or against the southern area of #1 Chr. 2:9, 25the Kenites.” 11David would save neither man nor woman alive, to bring news to Gath, saying, “Lest they should inform on us, saying, ‘Thus David did.’ ” And thus was his behavior all the time he dwelt in the country of the Philistines. 12So Achish believed David, saying, “He has made his people Israel utterly abhor him; therefore he will be my servant forever.”
