Hannah’s Prayer of Exultation
1Then Hannah prayed and said, “My heart exults in Adonai, my horn is lifted high in Adonai. I smile wide over my enemies, for I rejoice in Your salvation.
2There is none holy as Adonai, for there is none besides You, nor is there any rock like our God.
3Boast no more so proudly— insolence comes out of your mouth. For Adonai is the all-knowing God, and by Him deeds are weighed.
4The bows of the mighty are broken, but the stumbling are girded with strength.
5Those full hire themselves for bread, but those starving hunger no more. Even the barren gives birth to seven, but she with many sons languishes.
6Adonai causes death and makes alive, He brings down to Sheol and raises up.
7Adonai makes poor and makes rich, He brings low and also lifts up.
8He raises the helpless from the dust. He lifts the needy from the dunghill, to make them sit with nobles, granting them a seat of honor. For the earth’s pillars are Adonai’s, and He has set the world on them.
9He guards the steps of His godly ones, but the wicked are silenced in darkness. For one does not prevail by might.
10Those who oppose Adonai will be shattered. He thunders against them in heaven. He judges the ends of the earth. He gives strength to His king, exalting the horn of His anointed one.”
Eli’s Sons Sin Against Adonai
11Then Elkanah went home to Ramah, while the boy served Adonai before Eli the kohen.
12Now Eli’s sons were worthless men; they did not acknowledge Adonai.
13Now this was the custom of the kohanim with the people: whenever any man offered a sacrifice, the kohen’s servant would come along, while the meat was boiling, with a three-pronged fork in his hand,
14and he would thrust it into the pan, or kettle, or caldron or pot. Whatever the fork brought up, the kohen would take for himself. This is how they dealt with all the Israelites who came there to Shiloh.
15Even before they burned the fat, the kohen’s servant would come and say to the one offering sacrifice, “Give the kohen meat for roasting, since he will not accept boiled meat from you—only raw.”
16If the man said to him, “Let them first burn the fat up as smoke, and then take as much as you desire,” he would reply, “No! But you must give it now—otherwise, I will take it by force.”
17Thus the sin of the young men was very great before Adonai, for the men despised the offering of Adonai.
18But Samuel was ministering before Adonai, as a boy girded with a linen ephod.
19Moreover, his mother would make him a little robe and bring it to him from year to year when she would come up with her husband to offer the annual sacrifice.
20Then Eli would bless Elkanah and his wife and say, “May Adonai give you offspring from this woman instead of the one she requested from Adonai.” Then they would return to their place.
21So Adonai visited Hannah, and she conceived and gave birth to three sons and two daughters. Meanwhile, the child Samuel grew before Adonai.
22Now Eli had grown very old. He heard all that his sons did to all Israel, and how they slept with the women who served at the doorway of the Tent of Meeting.
23So he said to them, “Why do you do such things? For I hear evil reports from all these people concerning you.
24No, my sons! For this is not a good report that I hear Adonai’s people spreading around.
25If a man sins against another, God may pardon him; but if a man sins against Adonai, who will intercede for him?” But they did not listen to the voice of their father, because Adonai desired to put them to death.
26Meanwhile, the child Samuel kept growing and increasing in favor both with Adonai and also with men.
27Now there came a man of God to Eli and said to him, “Thus says Adonai: Did I not reveal Myself clearly to the house of your father when they were in Egypt belonging to Pharaoh’s palace?
28Also did I not choose them from all the tribes of Israel to be My kohanim, to officiate at My altar, to burn incense and to wear an ephod before Me? Did I not give to the house of your father all the fire offerings of Bnei-Yisrael?
29Why do you kick at My sacrifice and My offering which I have commanded in My dwelling, and honor your sons above Me, by fattening yourselves with the choicest of every offering of Israel My people?
30Therefore Adonai God of Israel declares, I indeed said that your house and your father’s house should walk before Me forever. But now declares Adonai, far be it from Me! For I will honor those who honor Me, but those who despise Me will be disdained.
31Behold, the days are coming when I will cut short your strength and the strength of your father’s house, so that no one in your household will reach old age.
32Moreover, you will behold the distress of My dwelling, despite all that is good that has been done to Israel. So no one in your household will reach old age, forever.
33Any man of yours that I did not cut off from My altar would make your eyes weep and your soul grieve. So all the increase of your household will die as young men.
34Now this will be the sign to you that will come on your two sons—Hophni and Phinehas—on the same day both of them will die.
35“Yet I will raise up for Myself a faithful kohen who will do according to what is in My heart and My mind. Then I will build him an enduring house, and he will walk before My anointed one all the time.
36Anyone left in your household will come and bow low to him for a piece of silver and a loaf of bread, and will say: ‘Please, assign me to one of the priestly offices so that I may eat a morsel of bread.’”

Hannah’s Prayer
1And Hannah #Gen. 24:26, 52prayed and said:
#Phil. 4:6“My heart rejoices in the Lord;
#1 Sam. 2:1–10; Ps. 97:11, 12; Luke 1:46–55My horn is exalted in the Lord.
I smile at my enemies,
Because I #Ps. 75:10; 89:17, 24; 92:10; 112:9rejoice in Your salvation.
2“No#Ps. 9:14; 13:5; 35:9; Is. 12:2, 3 one is holy like the Lord,
For there is #Ex. 15:11; Ps. 86:8; Rev. 15:4none besides You,
Nor is there any #Deut. 4:35rock like our God.
3“Talk no more so very proudly;
#Deut. 32:4, 30, 31; 2 Sam. 22:32; Ps. 18:2Let no arrogance come from your mouth,
For the Lord is the God of #Ps. 94:4knowledge;
And by Him actions are weighed.
4“The#1 Sam. 16:7 bows of the mighty men are broken,
And those who stumbled are girded with strength.
5Those who were full have hired themselves out for bread,
And the hungry have ceased to hunger.
Even #Ps. 37:15; 46:9the barren has borne seven,
And #Ps. 113:9she who has many children has become feeble.
6“The#Is. 54:1; Jer. 15:9 Lord kills and makes alive;
He brings down to the grave and brings up.
7The Lord #Deut. 32:39; 2 Kin. 5:7; Job 5:18; (Rev. 1:18)makes poor and makes rich;
#Deut. 8:17, 18; Job 1:21He brings low and lifts up.
8#Job 5:11; Ps. 75:7; James 4:10He raises the poor from the dust
And lifts the beggar from the ash heap,
#Job 42:10–12; Ps. 75:7; 113:7; Luke 1:52To set them among princes
And make them inherit the throne of glory.
#Job 36:7; Ps. 113:8“For the pillars of the earth are the Lord’s,
And He has set the world upon them.
9#Job 38:4–6; Ps. 75:3; 104:5He will guard the feet of His saints,
But the #Ps. 37:23, 24; 91:11, 12; 94:18; 121:3; Prov. 3:26; (1 Pet. 1:5)wicked shall be silent in darkness.
“For by strength no man shall prevail.
10The adversaries of the Lord shall be #(Rom. 3:19)broken in pieces;
#Ex. 15:6; Ps. 2:9From heaven He will thunder against them.
#1 Sam. 7:10; 2 Sam. 22:14, 15; Ps. 18:13, 14The Lord will judge the ends of the earth.
#Ps. 96:13; 98:9; (Matt. 25:31, 32)“He will give #(Matt. 28:18)strength to His king,
And #Ps. 21:1, 7exalt the horn of His anointed.”
11Then Elkanah went to his house at Ramah. But the child ministered to the Lord before Eli the priest.
The Wicked Sons of Eli
12Now the sons of Eli were #Ps. 89:24corrupt; #Deut. 13:13they did not know the Lord. 13And the priests’ custom with the people was that when any man offered a sacrifice, the priest’s servant would come with a three-pronged fleshhook in his hand while the meat was boiling. 14Then he would thrust it into the pan, or kettle, or caldron, or pot; and the priest would take for himself all that the fleshhook brought up. So they did in #Judg. 2:10; (Rom. 1:28)Shiloh to all the Israelites who came there. 15Also, before they #1 Sam. 1:3burned the fat, the priest’s servant would come and say to the man who sacrificed, “Give meat for roasting to the priest, for he will not take boiled meat from you, but raw.”
16And if the man said to him, “They should really burn the fat first; then you may take as much as your heart desires,” he would then answer him, “No, but you must give it now; and if not, I will take it by force.”
17Therefore the sin of the young men was very great #Lev. 3:3–5, 16before the Lord, for men #Gen. 6:11abhorred the offering of the Lord.
Samuel’s Childhood Ministry
18#(Mal. 2:7–9)But Samuel ministered before the Lord, even as a child, #1 Sam. 2:11; 3:1wearing a linen ephod. 19Moreover his mother used to make him a little robe, and bring it to him year by year when she #Ex. 28:4came up with her husband to offer the yearly sacrifice. 20And Eli #1 Sam. 1:3, 21would bless Elkanah and his wife, and say, “The Lord give you descendants from this woman for the loan that was #Gen. 14:19given to the Lord.” Then they would go to their own home.
21And the Lord #1 Sam. 1:11, 27, 28visited Hannah, so that she conceived and bore three sons and two daughters. Meanwhile the child Samuel #Gen. 21:1grew before the Lord.
Prophecy Against Eli’s Household
22Now Eli was very old; and he heard everything his sons did to all Israel, and how they lay with #Judg. 13:24; 1 Sam. 2:26; 3:19–21; Luke 1:80; 2:40the women who assembled at the door of the tabernacle of meeting. 23So he said to them, “Why do you do such things? For I hear of your evil dealings from all the people. 24No, my sons! For it is not a good report that I hear. You make the Lord’s people transgress. 25If one man sins against another, #Ex. 38:8God will judge him. But if a man #Deut. 1:17; 25:1, 2sins against the Lord, who will intercede for him?” Nevertheless they did not heed the voice of their father, #Num. 15:30because the Lord desired to kill them.
26And the child Samuel #Josh. 11:20grew in stature, and #1 Sam. 2:21in favor both with the Lord and men.
27Then a #Prov. 3:4man of God came to Eli and said to him, “Thus says the Lord: #Deut. 33:1; Judg. 13:6; 1 Sam. 9:6; 1 Kin. 13:1‘Did I not clearly reveal Myself to the house of your father when they were in Egypt in Pharaoh’s house? 28Did I not #Ex. 4:14–16; 12:1choose him out of all the tribes of Israel to be My priest, to offer upon My altar, to burn incense, and to wear an ephod before Me? And #Ex. 28:1, 4; Num. 16:5did I not give to the house of your father all the offerings of the children of Israel made by fire? 29Why do you #Lev. 2:3, 10; 6:16; 7:7, 8, 34, 35; Num. 5:9kick at My sacrifice and My offering which I have commanded in My #Deut. 32:15dwelling place, and honor your sons more than #Deut. 12:5; Ps. 26:8Me, to make yourselves fat with the best of all the offerings of Israel My people?’ 30Therefore the Lord God of Israel says: #Matt. 10:37‘I said indeed that your house and the house of your father would walk before Me forever.’ But now the Lord says: #Ex. 29:9; Num. 25:13‘Far be it from Me; for those who honor Me I will honor, and #Jer. 18:9, 10those who despise Me shall be lightly esteemed. 31Behold, #Ps. 91:14; Mal. 2:9–12the days are coming that I will cut off your arm and the arm of your father’s house, so that there will not be an old man in your house. 32And you will see an enemy in My dwelling place, despite all the good which God does for Israel. And there shall not be #1 Sam. 4:11–18; 22:18, 19; 1 Kin. 2:27, 35an old man in your house forever. 33But any of your men whom I do not cut off from My altar shall consume your eyes and grieve your heart. And all the descendants of your house shall die in the flower of their age. 34Now this shall be #Zech. 8:4a sign to you that will come upon your two sons, on Hophni and Phinehas: #1 Sam. 10:7–9; 1 Kin. 13:3in one day they shall die, both of them. 35Then #1 Sam. 4:11, 17I will raise up for Myself a faithful priest who shall do according to what is in My heart and in My mind. #1 Kin. 2:35; Ezek. 44:15; (Heb. 2:17; 7:26–28)I will build him a sure house, and he shall walk before #2 Sam. 7:11, 27; 1 Kin. 11:38My anointed forever. 36#Ps. 18:50And it shall come to pass that everyone who is left in your house will come and bow down to him for a piece of silver and a morsel of bread, and say, “Please, put me in one of the priestly positions, that I may eat a piece of bread.” ’ ”
