Revelation 21
21
A New Heaven and a New Earth
1Then I saw “a new heaven and a new earth,”#21:1 Isaiah 65:17 for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea. 2I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband. 3And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Look! Godʼs dwelling place is now among the people, and he will dwell with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. 4‘He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death’#21:4 Isaiah 25:8 or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.”
5He who was seated on the throne said, “I am making everything new!” Then he said, “Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.”
6He said to me: “It is done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. To the thirsty I will give water without cost from the spring of the water of life. 7Those who are victorious will inherit all this, and I will be their God and they will be my children. 8But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile, the murderers, the sexually immoral, those who practice magic arts, the idolaters and all liars — they will be consigned to the fiery lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death.”
The New Jerusalem, the Bride of the Lamb
9One of the seven angels who had the seven bowls full of the seven last plagues came and said to me, “Come, I will show you the bride, the wife of the Lamb.” 10And he carried me away in the Spirit to a mountain great and high, and showed me the Holy City, Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God. 11It shone with the glory of God, and its brilliance was like that of a very precious jewel, like a jasper, clear as crystal. 12It had a great, high wall with twelve gates, and with twelve angels at the gates. On the gates were written the names of the twelve tribes of Israel. 13There were three gates on the east, three on the north, three on the south and three on the west. 14The wall of the city had twelve foundations, and on them were the names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb.
15The angel who talked with me had a measuring rod of gold to measure the city, its gates and its walls. 16The city was laid out like a square, as long as it was wide. He measured the city with the rod and found it to be 12,000 stadia#21:16 That is, about 1,400 miles or about 2,200 kilometers in length, and as wide and high as it is long. 17The angel measured the wall using human measurement, and it was 144 cubits#21:17 That is, about 200 feet or about 65 meters thick.#21:17 Or high 18The wall was made of jasper, and the city of pure gold, as pure as glass. 19The foundations of the city walls were decorated with every kind of precious stone. The first foundation was jasper, the second sapphire, the third agate, the fourth emerald, 20the fifth onyx, the sixth ruby, the seventh chrysolite, the eighth beryl, the ninth topaz, the tenth turquoise, the eleventh jacinth, and the twelfth amethyst.#21:20 The precise identification of some of these precious stones is uncertain. 21The twelve gates were twelve pearls, each gate made of a single pearl. The great street of the city was of gold, as pure as transparent glass.
22I did not see a temple in the city, because the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are its temple. 23The city does not need the sun or the moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and the Lamb is its lamp. 24The nations will walk by its light, and the kings of the earth will bring their splendor into it. 25On no day will its gates ever be shut, for there will be no night there. 26The glory and honor of the nations will be brought into it. 27Nothing impure will ever enter it, nor will anyone who does what is shameful or deceitful, but only those whose names are written in the Lambʼs book of life.

21
1And I saw a renewed heaven and a renewed earth,#Isa. 65:17#See also Isa. 66:22 for the former heaven and the former earth had passed away, and the sea is no more.
2And I, Yoḥanan, saw the set-apart city, renewed Yerushalayim, coming down out of the heaven from Elohim, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.
3And I heard a loud voice from the heaven saying, “See, the Booth of Elohim is with men, and He shall dwell with them, and they shall be His people, and Elohim Himself shall be with them and be their Elohim.#Lev. 26:11, 12#See also Isa. 7:14; Isa. 8:8; Isa. 8:10; Jer. 31:33; Ezek. 37:27; 2Ch. 6:18
4“And Elohim shall wipe away every tear from their eyes, and there shall be no more death, nor mourning, nor crying. And there shall be no more pain, for the former matters have passed away.”
5And He who was sitting on the throne said, “See, I make all matters new.” And He said to me, “Write, for these words are true and trustworthy.”
6And He said to me, “It is done! I am the ‘Aleph’ and the ‘Taw’, the Beginning and the End. To the one who thirsts I shall give of the fountain of the water of life without payment.
7“The one who overcomes shall inherit all this, and I shall be his Elohim and he shall be My son.
8“But as for the cowardly, and untrustworthy, and abominable, and murderers, and those who whore, and drug sorcerers, and idolaters, and all the false, their part is in the lake which burns with fire and sulphur, which is the second death.”
9And one of the seven messengers who held the seven bowls filled with the seven last plagues came to me and spoke with me, saying, “Come, I shall show you the bride, the Lamb’s wife.”
10And he carried me away in the Spirit to a great and high mountain, and showed me the great city, the set-apart Yerushalayim, descending out of the heaven from Elohim,
11having the esteem of Elohim, and her light was like a most precious stone, like a jasper stone, clear as crystal,
12and having a great and high wall, having twelve gates, and at the gates twelve messengers, and names written on them, which are those of the twelve tribes of the children of Yisra’ĕl:#See Ezek. 47:22, 23; Ezek. 48:31-34
13three gates on the east, three gates on the north, three gates on the south, and three gates on the west.
14And the wall of the city had twelve foundations, and on them were the names of the twelve emissaries of the Lamb.
15And he who spoke with me had a golden measuring rod, to measure the city, and its gates, and its wall.
16And the city lies four-cornered, and its length is as great as its breadth. And he measured the city with the rod: twelve thousand stadia#Approx. 2216 kilometres or 1377 miles. – the length, and the breadth, and height of it are equal.
17And he measured its wall: hundred and forty-four forearms,#Approx. 66 metres or 216 feet. according to the measure of a man, that is, of a messenger.
18And the structure of its wall was jasper. And the city was clean gold, like clear glass.
19And the foundations of the wall of the city were adorned with all kinds of precious stones: the first foundation jasper, the second sapphire, the third agate, the fourth emerald,
20the fifth sardonyx, the sixth ruby, the seventh chrysolite, the eighth beryl, the ninth topaz, the tenth chrysoprase, the eleventh jacinth, and the twelfth amethyst.
21And the twelve gates were twelve pearls – each one of the gates was a single pearl. And the street of the city was clean gold, like transparent glass.
22And I saw no Dwelling Place in it, for יהוה Ěl Shaddai is its Dwelling Place, and the Lamb.
23And the city had no need of the sun, nor of the moon, to shine in it, for the esteem of Elohim lightened it, and the Lamb is its lamp.
24And the nations, of those who are saved, shall walk in its light,#See Isa. 60:3 and the sovereigns of the earth bring their esteem into it.
25And its gates shall not be shut at all by day, for night shall not be there.
26And they shall bring the esteem and the appreciation of the nations into it.
27And there shall by no means enter into it whatever is unclean, neither anyone doing abomination and falsehood,#See Rev. 22:15 and 2Thes. 2:11 but only those who are written in the Lamb’s Book of Life.#Dan. 12:1
