Revelation 18
18
The Fall of Babylon
1I saw another angel come from heaven. This one had great power, and the earth was bright because of his glory. 2#Is 21.9; Jr 51.8; Rev 14.8; Is 13.21; Jr 50.39. The angel shouted,
“Fallen! Powerful Babylon
has fallen
and is now the home
of demons.
It is the den
of every filthy spirit
and of all unclean birds,
and every dirty
and hated animal.
3 #
Is 23.17; Jr 51.7. Babylon's evil and immoral wine
has made all nations drunk.
Every king on earth
has slept with her,
and every merchant on earth
is rich because of
her evil desires.”
4 #
Is 48.20; Jr 50.8; 51.6,45. Then I heard another voice
from heaven shout,
“My people, you must escape
from Babylon.
Don't take part in her sins
and share her punishment.
5 #
Gn 18.20,21; Jr 51.9. Her sins are piled
as high as heaven.
God has remembered the evil
she has done.
6 #
Ps 137.8; Jr 50.29. Treat her as she
has treated others.
Make her pay double
for what she has done.
Make her drink twice as much
of what she mixed
for others.
7 #
Is 47.7-9. That woman honored herself
with a life of luxury.
Reward her now
with suffering and pain.
“Deep in her heart
Babylon said,
‘I am the queen!
Never will I be a widow
or know what it means
to be sad.’
8And so, in a single day
she will suffer the pain
of sorrow, hunger, and death.
Fire will destroy
her dead body,
because her judge
is the powerful Lord God.”
9 #
Ez 26.16,17. Every king on earth who slept with her and shared in her luxury will mourn. They will weep, when they see the smoke from that fire. 10Her sufferings will frighten them, and they will stand at a distance and say,
“Pity that great
and powerful city!
Pity Babylon!
In a single hour
her judgment has come.”
11 #
Ez 27.31,36. Every merchant on earth will mourn, because there is no one to buy their goods. 12#Ez 27.12,13,22. There won't be anyone to buy their gold, silver, jewels, pearls, fine linen, purple cloth, silk, scarlet cloth, sweet-smelling wood, fancy carvings of ivory and wood, as well as things made of bronze, iron, or marble. 13No one will buy their cinnamon, spices, incense, myrrh, frankincense,#18.13 myrrh, frankincense: Myrrh was a valuable sweet-smelling powder often used in perfume. Frankincense was a valuable powder that was burned to make a sweet smell. wine, olive oil, fine flour, wheat, cattle, sheep, horses, chariots, slaves, and other humans.
14Babylon, the things
your heart desired
have all escaped
from you.
Every luxury
and all your glory
will be lost forever.
You will never
get them back.
15 #
Ez 27.31,36. The merchants had become rich because of her. But when they saw her sufferings, they were terrified. They stood at a distance, crying and mourning. 16Then they shouted,
“Pity the great city
of Babylon!
She dressed in fine linen
and wore purple
and scarlet cloth.
She had jewelry
made of gold
and precious stones
and pearls.
17 #
Is 23.14; Ez 27.26-30. Yet in a single hour
her riches disappeared.”
Every ship captain and passenger and sailor stood at a distance, together with everyone who does business by traveling on the sea. 18#Ez 27.32. When they saw the smoke from her fire, they shouted, “This was the greatest city ever!”
19 #
Ez 27.30-34. They cried loudly, and in their sorrow they threw dust on their heads, as they said,
“Pity the great city
of Babylon!
Everyone who sailed the seas
became rich
from her treasures.
But in a single hour
the city was destroyed.
20 #
Dt 32.43; Jr 51.48. The heavens should be happy
with God's people
and apostles and prophets.
God has punished her
for them.”
21 #
Jr 51.63,64;
Ez 26.21. A powerful angel then picked up a huge stone and threw it into the sea. The angel said,
“This is how the great city
of Babylon
will be thrown down,
never to rise again.
22 #
Is 24.8; Ez 26.13. #Jr 7.34; 25.10. The music of harps and singers
and of flutes and trumpets
will no longer be heard.
No workers will ever
set up shop in that city,
and the sound
of grinding grain
will be silenced forever.
23Lamps will no longer shine
anywhere in Babylon,
and couples will never again
say wedding vows there.
Her merchants ruled
the earth,
and by her witchcraft
she fooled all nations.
24 #
Jr 51.49. On the streets of Babylon
is found the blood
of God's people
and of his prophets,
and everyone else.”

Ḥazon (Revelation) 18
18
1And after this I saw another messenger coming down from the heaven, having great authority, and the earth was lightened from his esteem.
2And he cried with a mighty voice, saying, “Baḇel the great is fallen, is fallen,#Isa. 21:9 and has become a dwelling place of demons, a haunt for every unclean spirit, and a haunt for every unclean and hated bird,
3because all the nations have drunk of the wine of the wrath of her whoring, and the sovereigns of the earth have committed whoring with her, and the merchants of the earth have become rich through the power of her riotous living.”
4And I heard another voice from the heaven saying, “Come out of her, my people, lest you share in her sins, and lest you receive of her plagues.#See Jer. 51:6; Jer. 51:9; Jer. 51:45. See also Jer. 50:8; Jer. 50:13; Jer. 50:28
5“Because her sins have piled up to reach the heaven, and Elohim has remembered her unrighteousnesses.
6“Render to her as she indeed did render, and repay her double according to her works. In the cup which she has mixed, mix for her double.
7“As much as she esteemed herself and lived riotously, so much torture and grief give to her, because in her heart she says, ‘I sit as sovereigness, and I am not a widow, and I do not see mourning at all.’
8“Because of this her plagues shall come in one day: death and mourning and scarcity of food. And she shall be burned up with fire, because יהוה Elohim who judges her is mighty.
9“And the sovereigns of the earth who committed whoring and lived riotously with her shall weep and mourn over her, when they see the smoke of her burning,
10standing at a distance for fear of her torture, saying, ‘Woe! Woe, the great city Baḇel, the mighty city, because your judgment has come in one hour!’
11“And the merchants of the earth weep and mourn over her, because no one buys their merchandise any more –
12merchandise of gold and silver, and precious stone and pearls, and fine linen and purple, and silk and scarlet, and all citron wood, and every object of ivory, and every object of most precious wood and bronze and iron and marble,
13and cinnamon and incense, and fragrant oil and frankincense, and wine and oil, and fine flour and wheat, and cattle and sheep, and horses and carriages, and bodies and lives of men.
14“And the fruit that your being longed for has gone from you. And all your riches and splendour are lost to you, and you shall find them no more, not at all.
15“The merchants of these, those who became rich by her, shall stand at a distance for fear of her torture, weeping and mourning,
16and saying, ‘Woe! Woe, the great city that was dressed in fine linen and purple and scarlet, and adorned with gold and precious stones and pearls!
17For in one hour such great riches was laid waste.’ And every shipmaster, and every passenger, and sailors, and as many as work the sea for their living, stood at a distance,
18and cried out when they saw the smoke of her burning, saying, ‘What is like this great city?’
19“And they threw dust on their heads and cried out, weeping and mourning, and saying, ‘Woe! Woe, the great city, in which all who had ships on the sea became rich by her wealth! For in one hour she was laid waste.’
20“Rejoice over her, O heaven, and you set-apart emissaries and prophets, for Elohim has completely avenged you on her!”
21And one mighty messenger picked up a stone like a great millstone and threw it into the sea, saying, “With such a rush the great city Baḇel shall be thrown down, and shall not be found any more at all.
22“And the sound of harpists, and musicians, and flautists, and trumpeters shall not be heard in you any more at all. And no craftsman of any trade shall be found in you any more at all. And the sound of a millstone shall not be heard in you any more at all.
23“And the light of a lamp shall not shine in you any more at all. And the voice of bridegroom and bride shall not be heard in you any more at all. For your merchants were the great ones of the earth, for by your drug sorcery all the nations were led astray.
24“And in her was found the blood of prophets and set-apart ones, and of all who were slain on the earth.”
