Psalms 77
77
(A psalm by Asaph for Jeduthun, the music leader.)
In Times of Trouble God Is with His People
1I pray to you, Lord God,
and I beg you to listen.
2In days filled with trouble,
I search for you.
And at night I tirelessly
lift my hands in prayer,
refusing comfort.
3When I think of you,
I feel restless and weak.
4Because of you, Lord God,
I can't sleep.
I am restless
and can't even talk.
5I think of times gone by,
of those years long ago.
6Each night my mind
is flooded with questions:#77.6 my mind … questions: One ancient translation; Hebrew “I remember my music.”
7“Have you rejected me forever?
Won't you be kind again?
8Is this the end of your love
and your promises?
9Have you forgotten
how to have pity?
Do you refuse to show mercy
because of your anger?”
10Then I said, “God Most High,
what hurts me most
is that you no longer help us
with your mighty arm.”
11Our Lord, I will remember
the things you have done,
your miracles of long ago.
12I will think about each one
of your mighty deeds.
13Everything you do is right,
and no other god
compares with you.
14You alone work miracles,
and you have let nations
see your mighty power.
15With your own arm you rescued
your people, the descendants
of Jacob and Joseph.
16The ocean looked at you, God,
and it trembled deep down
with fear.
17Water flowed from the clouds.
Thunder was heard above
as your arrows of lightning
flashed about.
18Your thunder roared
like chariot wheels.
The world was made bright
by lightning,
and all the earth trembled.
19You walked through the water
of the mighty sea,
but your footprints
were never seen.
20You guided your people
like a flock of sheep,
and you chose Moses and Aaron
to be their leaders.

Psalm 77
77
In the Day of Trouble I Seek the Lord
To the choirmaster: according to #Ps. 39, title Jeduthun. A Psalm of #Ps. 50, titleAsaph.
1I #See Ps. 3:4cry aloud to God,
aloud to God, and he will hear me.
2 #
Ps. 86:7; [Ps. 20:1; 50:15; Isa. 26:16] In the day of my trouble I seek the Lord;
in #Ps. 63:6; Isa. 26:9 the night my #[Ps. 143:6] hand is stretched out without wearying;
my soul #Gen. 37:35refuses to be comforted.
3When I remember God, I #Ps. 42:5, 11; 43:5moan;
when I meditate, my spirit faints. Selah
4You hold my eyelids open;
I am so #[Gen. 41:8]troubled that I cannot speak.
5I consider #ver. 10, 11; Ps. 44:1; 143:5; Deut. 32:7; Isa. 51:9the days of old,
the years long ago.
6I said,#77:6 Hebrew lacks I said “Let me remember my #See Ps. 42:8 song in the night;
let me #Ps. 4:4meditate in my heart.”
Then my spirit made a diligent search:
7“Will the Lord #See Ps. 44:9 spurn forever,
and never again #Ps. 85:1be favorable?
8Has his steadfast love forever ceased?
Are his #[Rom. 9:6]promises at an end for all time?
9 # [Isa. 49:15] Has God forgotten to be gracious?
# [Hab. 3:2] Has he in anger shut up his compassion?” Selah
10Then I said, “I will appeal to this,
to the years of the #[Ps. 118:15]right hand of the Most High.”#77:10 Or This is my grief: that the right hand of the Most High has changed
11I will remember the deeds of the Lord;
yes, I will #ver. 5; Ps. 105:5remember your wonders of old.
12I will ponder all your #Ps. 90:16 work,
and meditate on your #Ps. 9:11mighty deeds.
13Your way, O God, is #Ps. 73:17 holy.
# See Ps. 35:10 What god is great like our God?
14You are the God who #See Ps. 72:18 works wonders;
you have #Ps. 106:8made known your might among the peoples.
15You #[Ps. 74:2; Ex. 6:6; Deut. 9:29]with your arm redeemed your people,
the children of Jacob and Joseph. Selah
16When #Ps. 114:3; Ex. 14:21; Josh. 3:15, 16; Hab. 3:10the waters saw you, O God,
when the waters saw you, they were afraid;
indeed, the deep trembled.
17The clouds poured out water;
the skies #[Ps. 68:33] gave forth thunder;
your #See Ps. 18:14arrows flashed on every side.
18 #
Ps. 104:7 The crash of your thunder was in the whirlwind;
#
Ps. 97:4 your lightnings lighted up the world;
the earth #See Ps. 18:7trembled and shook.
19Your #Hab. 3:15 way was through the sea,
your path through the great waters;
yet your footprints #See Ps. 36:6were unseen.#77:19 Hebrew unknown
20You #Ps. 78:52, 53; 80:1; Ex. 13:21; 14:19; Isa. 63:11, 12led your people like a flock
by the hand of Moses and Aaron.
