Psalms 22
22
(A psalm by David for the music leader. To the tune “A Deer at Dawn.”)
Suffering and Praise
1 #
Mt 27.46; Mk 15.34. My God, my God, why have you
deserted me?
Why are you so far away?
Won't you listen to my groans
and come to my rescue?
2I cry out day and night,
but you don't answer,
and I can never rest.
3Yet you are the holy God,
ruling from your throne
and praised by Israel.
4 #
3 Macc 2.12. Our ancestors trusted you,
and you rescued them.
5When they cried out for help,
you saved them,
and you did not let them down
when they depended on you.
6But I am merely a worm,
far less than human,
and I am hated and rejected
by people everywhere.
7 #
Mt 27.39; Mk 15.29; Lk 23.34,35. Everyone who sees me
makes fun and sneers.
They shake their heads,
8 #
3 Macc 6.11; Mt 27.43. and say, “Trust the Lord!
If you are his favorite,
let him protect you
and keep you safe.”
9You, Lord, brought me
safely through birth,
and you protected me
when I was a baby
at my mother's breast.
10From the day I was born,
I have been in your care,
and from the time of my birth,
you have been my God.
11Don't stay far off
when I am in trouble
with no one to help me.
12Enemies are all around
like a herd of wild bulls.
Powerful bulls from Bashan#22.12 Bashan: A land east of the Jordan River, where there were pastures suitable for raising fine cattle.
are everywhere.
13My enemies are like lions
roaring and attacking
with jaws open wide.
14I have no more strength
than a few drops of water.
All my bones are out of joint;
my heart is like melted wax.
15My strength has dried up
like a broken clay pot,
and my tongue sticks
to the roof of my mouth.
You, God, have left me
to die in the dirt.
16Brutal enemies attack me
like a pack of dogs,
tearing at#22.16 tearing at: One possible meaning for the difficult Hebrew text. my hands
and my feet.
17I can count all my bones,
and my enemies just stare
and sneer at me.
18 #
Mt 27.35; Mk 15.24; Lk 23.34,35; Jn 19.24. They took my clothes
and gambled for them.
19Don't stay far away, Lord!
My strength comes from you,
so hurry and help.
20Rescue me from enemy swords
and save me from those dogs.
21Don't let lions eat me.
You rescued me from the horns
of wild bulls,
22 #
He 2.12. and when your people meet,
I will praise you, Lord.
23All who worship the Lord,
now praise him!
You belong to Jacob's family
and to the people of Israel,
so fear and honor the Lord!
24The Lord doesn't hate
or despise the helpless
in all of their troubles.
When I cried out, he listened
and did not turn away.
25When your people meet,
you will fill my heart
with your praises, Lord,
and everyone will see me
keep my promises to you.
26The poor will eat and be full,
and all who worship you
will be thankful
and live in hope.
27Everyone on this earth
will remember you, Lord.
People all over the world
will turn and worship you,
28because you are in control,
the ruler of all nations.
29All who are rich
and have more than enough
will bow down to you, Lord.
Even those who are dying
and almost in the grave
will come and bow down.
30In the future, everyone
will worship and learn
about you, our Lord.
31People not yet born
will be told,
“The Lord has saved us!”

Psalm 22
22
Why Have You Forsaken Me?
To the choirmaster: according to The Doe of the Dawn. A Psalm of David.
1 # Cited Matt. 27:46; Mark 15:34 My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?
Why are you so #ver. 11 far from saving me, from the words of my #Ps. 32:3; 38:8; Job 3:24; Isa. 59:11; [Heb. 5:7]groaning?
2O my God, I cry by #Ps. 88:1day, but you do not answer,
and by night, but I find no rest.
3Yet you are #Lev. 19:2 holy,
# [Ps. 80:1; 99:1] enthroned on #[Ps. 9:11, 14; 65:1; 102:21; 147:12]the praises#22:3 Or dwelling in the praises of Israel.
4In you our fathers trusted;
they trusted, and you delivered them.
5To you they #See Judg. 3:9 cried and were rescued;
in you they #Ps. 25:2; 31:1; 71:1; Isa. 49:23; Rom. 9:33trusted and were not put to shame.
6But I am #Job 25:6; Isa. 41:14 a worm and not a man,
#
Ps. 69:19; 109:25 scorned by mankind and #Isa. 49:7; 53:3despised by the people.
7All who see me #See Matt. 27:39-43; Mark 15:29-32; Luke 23:35, 36 mock me;
they make mouths at me; they #Ps. 109:25; [Ps. 44:14; 2 Kgs. 19:21; Isa. 37:22; Lam. 2:15]wag their heads;
8 # [Ps. 37:5; Prov. 16:3] “He trusts in the Lord; let him #Ps. 91:14 deliver him;
let him rescue him, for he #Ps. 18:19; Matt. 3:17; Mark 1:11; Luke 3:22delights in him!”
9Yet you are he who #Ps. 71:6took me from the womb;
you made me trust you at my mother’s breasts.
10On you was I cast from my birth,
and from #Isa. 46:3; 49:1; Gal. 1:15my mother’s womb you have been my God.
11Be not #See ver. 1; Ps. 10:1 far from me,
for trouble is near,
and there is #Ps. 107:12; 2 Kgs. 14:26; Isa. 63:5none to help.
12Many bulls encompass me;
# [Ps. 68:30 (Heb.)] strong bulls of #Amos 4:1Bashan surround me;
13they #Ps. 35:21; Job 16:10; Lam. 2:16; 3:46open wide their mouths at me,
like a ravening and roaring lion.
14I am #[Lam. 2:11] poured out like water,

15my strength is #Prov. 17:22 dried up like a potsherd,
and my #[John 19:28; See Job 29:10]tongue sticks to my jaws;
you lay me in the dust of death.
16For #[Phil. 3:2; Rev. 22:15] dogs encompass me;
a company of evildoers #Ps. 88:17 encircles me;
they have #Matt. 27:35; Mark 15:24; Luke 23:33; 24:40; John 19:23, 37; 20:25; [Zech. 12:10]pierced my hands and feet#22:16 Some Hebrew manuscripts, Septuagint, Vulgate, Syriac; most Hebrew manuscripts like a lion [they are at] my hands and feet—

19But you, O Lord, #[See ver. 11 above] do not be far off!

All you offspring of Jacob, #Ps. 50:15, 23glorify him,

my #Lev. 7:16 vows I will #Ps. 66:13; Jonah 2:9; See Ps. 50:14perform before those who fear him.
