A Plot To Kill Jesus
(Matthew 26.1-5,14,16; Mark 14.1,2,10,11; John 11.45-53)
1 #
Ex 12.1-27. The Festival of Thin Bread, also called Passover, was near. 2The chief priests and the teachers of the Law of Moses were looking for a way to get rid of Jesus, because they were afraid of what the people might do. 3Then Satan entered the heart of Judas Iscariot,#22.3 Iscariot: See the note at 6.16. who was one of the twelve apostles.
4Judas went to talk with the chief priests and the officers of the temple police about how he could help them arrest Jesus. 5They were very pleased and offered to pay Judas some money. 6He agreed and started looking for a good chance to betray Jesus when the crowds were not around.
Jesus Eats with His Disciples
(Matthew 26.17-25; Mark 14.12-21; John 13.21-30)
7The day had come for the Festival of Thin Bread, and it was time to kill the Passover lambs. 8So Jesus said to Peter and John, “Go and prepare the Passover meal for us to eat.”
9But they asked, “Where do you want us to prepare it?”
10Jesus told them, “As you go into the city, you will meet a man carrying a jar of water.#22.10 a man carrying a jar of water: A male slave carrying water would probably mean that the family was rich. Follow him into the house 11and say to the owner, ‘Our teacher wants to know where he can eat the Passover meal with his disciples.’ 12The owner will take you upstairs and show you a large room ready for you to use. Prepare the meal there.”
13Peter and John left. They found everything just as Jesus had told them, and they prepared the Passover meal.
The Lord's Supper
(Matthew 26.26-30; Mark 14.22-26; 1 Corinthians 11.23-25)
14When the time came for Jesus and the apostles to eat, 15he said to them, “I have very much wanted to eat this Passover meal with you before I suffer. 16I tell you I will not eat another Passover meal until it is finally eaten in God's kingdom.”
17Jesus took a cup of wine in his hands and gave thanks to God. Then he told the apostles, “Take this wine and share it with each other. 18I tell you that I will not drink any more wine until God's kingdom comes.”
19Jesus took some bread in his hands and gave thanks for it. He broke the bread and handed it to his apostles. Then he said, “This is my body, which is given for you. Eat this as a way of remembering me!”
20 #
Jr 31.31-34. After the meal he took another cup of wine in his hands. Then he said, “This is my blood. It is poured out for you, and with it God makes his new agreement. 21#Ps 41.9. The one who will betray me is here at the table with me! 22The Son of Man will die in the way that has been decided for him, but it will be terrible for the one who betrays him!”
23Then the apostles started arguing about who would ever do such a thing.
An Argument about Greatness
24 #
Mt 18.1; Mk 9.34; Lk 9.46. The apostles got into an argument about which one of them was the greatest. 25#Mt 20.25-27; Mk 10.42-44. So Jesus told them:
Foreign kings order their people around, and powerful rulers call themselves everyone's friends.#22.25 everyone's friends: This translates a Greek word that rulers sometimes used as a title for themselves or for special friends. 26#Mt 23.11; Mk 9.35. But don't be like them. The most important one of you should be like the least important, and your leader should be like a servant. 27#Jn 13.12-15. Who do people think is the greatest, a person who is served or one who serves? Isn't it the one who is served? But I have been with you as a servant.
28You have stayed with me in all my troubles. 29So I will give you the right to rule as kings, just as my Father has given me the right to rule as a king. 30#Mt 19.28. You will eat and drink with me in my kingdom, and you will each sit on a throne to judge the twelve tribes of Israel.
Jesus' Disciples Will Be Tested
(Matthew 26.31-35; Mark 14.27-31; John 13.36-38)
31Jesus said, “Simon, listen to me! Satan has demanded the right to test each one of you, as a farmer does when he separates wheat from the husks.#22.31 separates wheat from the husks: See the note at 3.17. 32But Simon, I have prayed that your faith will be strong. And when you have come back to me, help the others.”
33Peter said, “Lord, I am ready to go with you to jail and even to die with you.”
34Jesus replied, “Peter, I tell you that before a rooster crows tomorrow morning, you will say three times that you don't know me.”
Moneybags, Traveling Bags, and Swords
35 #
Mt 10.9,10; Mk 6.8,9; Lk 9.3; 10.4. Jesus asked his disciples, “When I sent you out without a moneybag or a traveling bag or sandals, did you need anything?”
“No!” they answered.
36Jesus told them, “But now, if you have a moneybag, take it with you. Also take a traveling bag, and if you don't have a sword,#22.36 moneybag … traveling bag … sword: These were things that someone would take on a dangerous journey. Jesus was telling his disciples to be ready for anything that might happen. They seem to have understood what he meant (see 22.49-51). sell some of your clothes and buy one. 37#Is 53.12. Do this because the Scriptures say, ‘He was considered a criminal.’ This was written about me, and it will soon come true.”
38The disciples said, “Lord, here are two swords!”
“Enough of that!” Jesus replied.
Jesus Prays
(Matthew 26.36-46; Mark 14.32-42)
39Jesus went out to the Mount of Olives, as he often did, and his disciples went with him. 40When they got there, he told them, “Pray that you won't be tested.”
41Jesus walked on a little way before he knelt down and prayed, 42“Father, if you will, please don't make me suffer by drinking from this cup.#22.42 drinking from this cup: In the Scriptures “to drink from a cup” sometimes means to suffer. But do what you want, and not what I want.”
43Then an angel from heaven came to help him. 44Jesus was in great pain and prayed so sincerely that his sweat fell to the ground like drops of blood.#22.43,44 Then an angel … like drops of blood: Verses 43,44 are not in some manuscripts.
45Jesus got up from praying and went over to his disciples. They were asleep and worn out from being so sad. 46He said to them, “Why are you asleep? Wake up and pray that you won't be tested.”
Jesus Is Arrested
(Matthew 26.47-56; Mark 14.43-50; John 18.3-11)
47While Jesus was still speaking, a crowd came up. It was led by Judas, one of the twelve apostles. He went over to Jesus and greeted him with a kiss.#22.47 greeted him with a kiss: It was the custom for people to greet each other with a kiss on the cheek.
48Jesus asked Judas, “Are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?”
49When Jesus' disciples saw what was about to happen, they asked, “Lord, should we attack them with a sword?” 50One of the disciples even struck at the high priest's servant with his sword and cut off the servant's right ear.
51“Enough of that!” Jesus said. Then he touched the servant's ear and healed it.
52Jesus spoke to the chief priests, the temple police, and the leaders who had come to arrest him. He said, “Why do you come out with swords and clubs and treat me like a criminal? 53#Lk 19.47; 21.37. I was with you every day in the temple, and you didn't arrest me. But this is your time, and darkness#22.53 darkness: Darkness stands for the power of the devil. is in control.”
Peter Says He Doesn't Know Jesus
(Matthew 26.57,58,67-75; Mark 14.53,54,66-72; John 18.12-18,25-27)
54Jesus was arrested and led away to the house of the high priest, while Peter followed at a distance. 55Some people built a fire in the middle of the courtyard and were sitting around it. Peter sat there with them, 56and a servant girl saw him. Then after she had looked at him carefully, she said, “This man was with Jesus!”
57Peter said, “Woman, I don't even know that man!”
58A little later someone else saw Peter and said, “You are one of them!”
“No, I'm not!” Peter replied.
59About an hour later another man insisted, “This man must have been with Jesus. They both come from Galilee.”
60Peter replied, “I don't know what you are talking about!” Right then, while Peter was still speaking, a rooster crowed.
61The Lord turned and looked at Peter. And Peter remembered that the Lord had said, “Before a rooster crows tomorrow morning, you will say three times that you don't know me.” 62Then Peter went out and cried bitterly.
63The men who were guarding Jesus made fun of him and beat him. 64They put a blindfold on him and said, “Tell us who struck you!” 65They kept on insulting Jesus in many other ways.
Jesus Is Questioned by the Council
(Matthew 26.59-66; Mark 14.55-64; John 18.19-24)
66At daybreak the nation's leaders, the chief priests, and the teachers of the Law of Moses got together and brought Jesus before their council. 67They said, “Tell us! Are you the Messiah?”
Jesus replied, “If I said so, you wouldn't believe me. 68And if I asked you a question, you wouldn't answer. 69But from now on, the Son of Man will be seated at the right side of God All-Powerful.”
70Then they asked, “Are you the Son of God?”#22.70 Son of God: This was one of the titles used for the kings of Israel.
Jesus answered, “You say I am!”#22.70 You say I am: Or “That's what you say.”
71They replied, “Why do we need more witnesses? He said it himself!”

Luke 22
22
The Day before Pesach
1Now the Feast of Matzah, which is called Passover, was approaching.
2The ruling kohanim and Torah scholars were searching for a way to do away with Yeshua, for they were afraid of the people.
3Then satan entered into Judah, the one from Kriot, one of the twelve.
4And he went away and talked with the ruling kohanim and officers of the Temple guard about how he might deliver Yeshua over to them.
5They were delighted and agreed to give him money.
6So he agreed and began looking for a chance to hand Yeshua over to them without a crowd.
7Then came the day of matzah when the Passover lamb had to be sacrificed.
8Now Yeshua sent Peter and John, saying, “Go and prepare the Passover for us, so we may eat.”
9Then they said to Him, “Where do You want us to prepare?”
10And He said to them, “Behold, when you have entered the city, a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him into the house that he enters.
11And say to the owner of the house, ‘The Teacher says to you, “Where is the guest room where I may eat the Passover with My disciples?”’
12And with that, he will show you a large upper room, fully furnished. Make preparations there.”
13So they left and found just what Yeshua had told them, and they prepared the Passover.
The Seder in the Upper Room
14When the hour came, Yeshua reclined at table, and the emissaries with Him.
15And He said to them, “I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer.
16For I tell you, I will never eat it again until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God.”
17And when He had taken a cup and offered the bracha, He said, “Take this and share it among yourselves.
18For I tell you that I will never drink of the fruit of the vine from now on, until the kingdom of God comes.”
19And when He had taken matzah and offered the bracha, He broke it and gave it to them, saying, “This is My body, given for you. Do this in memory of Me.”
20In the same way, He took the cup after the meal, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood, which is poured out for you.
21But look, the hand of the one betraying Me is with Mine on the table.
22For indeed, the Son of Man is going as has been predetermined; but woe to that man by whom He is betrayed!”
23So they began to discuss among themselves which of them it might be who would do this thing.
24But there was also a quarrel among them about which of them is considered the greatest.
25And Yeshua said to them, “The kings of the nations have mastery over them, and those exercising authority over them are called ‘benefactors.’
26But with you, it is not so. Rather, let the one who is greatest among you become like the youngest, and the one who leads like the one who serves.
27For who is greater, the one who reclines or the one who serves? Is it not the one who reclines? But I am among you as one who serves.
28“You are the ones who have remained with Me in My times of testing.
29And just as My Father has granted Me a kingdom, so I grant to you
30that you may eat and drink at My table in My kingdom, and you shall sit upon thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel.
31“Simon, Simon! Indeed, satan has demanded to sift you all like wheat.
32But I have prayed for you, Simon, that your faith will not fail. And when you have turned back, strengthen your brothers.”
33But Simon said to Him, “Master, I am ready to go with You even to prison and to death!”
34But Yeshua said, “I tell you, Peter, a rooster will not crow today until you have denied three times that you know Me.”
35And He said to them, “When I sent you out without a money pouch and travel bag and sandals, you didn’t lack anything, did you?” They said, “No, nothing.”
36Then He said to them, “But now, whoever has a money pouch must carry it as well as a travel bag. And whoever does not own a sword must sell his cloak and buy one.
37For I tell you that this which is written must be fulfilled in Me: ‘And he was counted with the lawless.’ For what is written about Me is being fulfilled.”
38But they said, “Master, look here! Two swords!” And He said to them, “It is enough.”
Yeshua Prays at the Mount of Olives
39And Yeshua came out and went as usual to the Mount of Olives, and the disciples followed Him.
40When he reached the place, He said to them, “Pray that you will not enter into temptation.”
41And He pulled back about a stone’s throw from them, got on His knees, and began to pray,
42saying, “Father, if You are willing, take this cup from Me; yet not My will, but Yours be done.”
43Now an angel from heaven appeared to Him and strengthened Him.
44And in His anguish, He was praying fervently; and His sweat was like drops of blood falling down on the ground.
45When He rose up from prayer, He came to the disciples and found them asleep, exhausted from grief.
46And He said to them, “Why are you sleeping? Get up and pray, so that you won’t enter into temptation.”
Betrayed!
47While Yeshua was speaking, suddenly a crowd came, and the one called Judah, one of the Twelve, approached Yeshua to kiss Him.
48But Yeshua said to him, “Judah, with a kiss you betray the Son of Man?”
49When those around Him saw what was going to happen, they said to Him, “Master, shall we strike with the sword?”
50And one of them struck the servant of the kohen gadol and cut off his right ear.
51But Yeshua answered and said, “Stop this now!” And He touched the man’s ear and healed him.
52Then Yeshua said to the ruling kohanim, officers of the Temple guard, and the elders who had come against Him, “Have you come out with swords and clubs as you would against a revolutionary?
53Every day I was with you in the Temple, yet you did not lay a finger on Me. But this is yours—the hour and the power of darkness.”
54Then they seized Yeshua and led Him away and brought Him into the house of the kohen gadol . But Peter was following from a distance.
Denied Three Times
55Now they had lit a fire in the center of the courtyard and sat down together, and Peter was sitting among them.
56Then a servant girl saw him sitting at the fire. She looked straight at him and said, “This one was with Him too!”
57But he denied it, saying, “Woman, I don’t know Him!”
58A little later, another saw him and said, “You too are one of them.” But Peter said, “Man, I am not!”
59And about an hour later, another began to insist, saying, “Certainly this fellow was with Him, for he too is a Galilean!”
60But Peter said, “Man, I don’t know what you’re talking about!” And immediately, while he was still speaking, a rooster crowed.
61And the Lord turned and looked straight at Peter. Then Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how He had told him, ‘Before the rooster crows today, you will deny Me three times.’
62And Peter went out and wept bitterly.
Beaten by Roman Soldiers
63Now the men who were guarding Yeshua began mocking and beating Him.
64They blindfolded Him and kept asking Him, saying, “Prophesy! Who is the one who hit You?”
65And reviling Him, they were saying many other things against Him.
Brought Before the Council
66As it become day, the elders of the people gathered together, both ruling kohanim and Torah scholars, and they led Him away to their council, saying,
67“If You are Mashiach, tell us.” But Yeshua said to them, “If I tell you, you will never believe;
68and if I ask you, you will never answer.
69But from now on, the Son of Man is seated at the right hand of the power of God.”
70Then they all said, “Are You then Ben-Elohim?” And to them He said, “You say that I am.”
71Then they said, “What further need do we have for testimony? For we have heard it ourselves from His own mouth!”
