The Lord Speaks to Jeremiah about the Nations
1The Lord often told me what to say about the different nations of the world.
What the Lord Says about Egypt
2 #
Is 19.1-25; Ez 29.1—32.32. In the fourth year that Jehoiakim#46.2 Jehoiakim: See the note at 1.3. was king of Judah, King Nebuchadnezzar#46.2 King Nebuchadnezzar: Ruled 605–562 b.c. At the time of the battle in 605 b.c., he was crown prince, but his father died a few months later, and he became king. of Babylonia defeated King Neco of Egypt#46.2 King Neco of Egypt: Neco II, ruled 609–594 b.c. in a battle at the city of Carchemish near the Euphrates River. And here is what the Lord told me to say about the Egyptian army:
3It's time to go into battle!
So grab your shields,
4saddle your horses,
and polish your spears.
Put on your helmets and armor,
then take your positions.
5I can see the battle now—
you are defeated
and running away,
never once looking back.
Terror is all around.
6You are strong and run fast,
but you can't escape.
You fall in battle
near the Euphrates River.
7What nation is this,
that rises like the Nile River
overflowing its banks?
8It is Egypt, rising with a roar
like a raging river
and saying,
“I'll flood the earth,
destroying cities, and killing
everyone in them.”
9Go ahead, Egypt.
Tell your chariots and cavalry
to attack and fight hard.
Order your troops to march out,
with Ethiopians#46.9 Ethiopians: See the note at 38.7,8. and Libyans
carrying shields,
and the Lydians#46.9 Lydians: Probably hired soldiers from Lydia, an area in west-central Asia minor. armed with bows
and arrows.
10But the Lord All-Powerful
will win this battle
and take revenge
on his enemies.
His sword will eat them
and drink their blood
until it is full.
They will be killed in the north
near the Euphrates River,
as a sacrifice to the Lord.
11Egypt, no medicine can heal you,
not even the soothing lotion
from Gilead.
12All nations have heard you weep;
you are disgraced,
and they know it.
Your troops fall to the ground,
stumbling over each other.
A Warning for Egypt
13-14 #
Jr 43.10-13. When King Nebuchadnezzar#46.13,14 Nebuchadnezzar: See the note at 21.2. of Babylonia was on his way to attack Egypt, the Lord sent me with a warning for every Egyptian town, but especially for Migdol, Memphis, and Tahpanhes. He said to tell them:
Prepare to defend yourselves!
Everywhere in your nation,
people are dying in war.
15I have struck down
your mighty god Apis#46.15 Apis: A sacred bull, kept in a temple at Memphis, Egypt, and worshiped as a god.
and chased him away.#46.15 I have … him away: One possible meaning for the difficult Hebrew text.
16Your soldiers stumble
over each other
and say, “Get up!
The enemy will kill us,
unless we can escape
to our own land.”
17Give the king of Egypt
this new name,
“Talks-Big-Does-Nothing.”
18Egypt, I am the true king,
the Lord All-Powerful,
and as surely as I live,
those enemies who attack
will tower over you
like Mount Tabor among the hills
or Mount Carmel by the sea.
19You will be led away captive,
so pack a few things
to bring with you.
Your capital, Memphis,
will lie empty and in ruins.
20An enemy from the north
will attack you, beautiful Egypt,
like a fly biting a cow.
21The foreign soldiers you hired
will turn and run.
But they are doomed,
like well-fed calves
being led to the butcher.
* 22The enemy army will go forward
like a swarm of locusts.#46.22 locusts: A type of grasshopper that comes in swarms and causes great damage to plant life.
Your troops will feel helpless,
like a snake in a forest
23when men with axes
start chopping down trees.
It can only hiss
and try to escape.
24Your people will be disgraced
and captured by the enemy
from the north.
25I am the Lord All-Powerful, the God of Israel. Soon I will punish the god Amon of Thebes#46.25 the god Amon of Thebes: Amon was the king of the Egyptian gods and was the special god of the Egyptian kings. and the other Egyptian gods, the Egyptian kings, the people of Egypt, and everyone who trusts in the Egyptian power. 26I will hand them over to King Nebuchadnezzar and his army. But I also promise that Egypt will someday have people living here again, just as it had before. I, the Lord, have spoken.
The Lord Will Bring Israel Home
The Lord said:
27 #
Jr 30.10,11. Israel,#46.27 Israel: See the note at 30.10. don't be afraid.
Someday I will bring you home
from foreign lands.
You and your descendants
will live in peace and safety,
with nothing to fear.
28So don't be afraid,
even though now
you deserve to be punished
and have been scattered
among other nations.
But when I destroy them,
I will protect you.
I, the Lord, have spoken.

Jeremiah 46

Judgment on Egypt
1The word of the Lord which came to Jeremiah the prophet against the nations: # Jer 1:10
2Concerning Egypt, # Isa 19; Eze 29:1–32:32 about the army of Pharaoh Necho king of Egypt, # 2Ki 23:29 which was by the Euphrates River in Carchemish, # Isa 10:9 which Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon defeated in the fourth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah:
3Prepare the small and large shields, # Isa 21:5; Jer 51:11–12
and draw near to battle!
4Harness the horses;
mount the steeds!
Take your positions
with your helmets,
polish the spears,
put on the armor! # Jer 51:3; Eze 21:9–11
5Why have I seen them
dismayed and drawing back?
Their mighty ones are beaten down
and have taken refuge in flight,
and not looking back.
Terror is on every side! # Jer 6:25; 49:29
says the Lord.
6Let not the swift flee away,
nor the mighty man escape;
they will stumble and fall # Jer 46:12; Da 11:19
towards the north by the Euphrates River.
7Who is this that comes up as the Nile,
whose waters surge about as the rivers? # Isa 8:7–8; Jer 47:2
8Egypt rises up like the Nile,
and his waters surge about like the rivers.
And he has said, I will go up and will cover the land.
I will surely destroy the city and its inhabitants.
9Come up, O horses,
and rage, O chariots!
And let the mighty men come forth:
the Cushites and the Libyans who handle the shield,
and the Lydians # Isa 66:19; Eze 27:10 who handle and bend the bow.
10For this is the day of the Lord God of Hosts,
a day of vengeance, # Joel 1:15 so that He may avenge Himself of His adversaries.
And the sword will devour;
and it will be satiated and made drunk with their blood; # Dt 32:42
for the Lord God of Hosts has a slaughter
in the north country by the Euphrates River.
11Go up into Gilead and take balm, # Jer 8:22
O virgin daughter of Egypt; # Isa 47:1
in vain you shall use many medicines,
for you will not be cured.
12The nations have heard of your shame,
and your cry has filled the land;
for the mighty man has stumbled over the mighty,
and they both have fallen together. # Isa 19:2; Na 3:8–10
Defeat of Egypt Foretold
13The word that the Lord spoke to Jeremiah the prophet, about Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon coming to strike the land of Egypt. # Jer 43:10–13; 44:30
14Declare in Egypt and proclaim in Migdol,
and pronounce in Memphis and in Tahpanhes; # Jer 44:1
say, “Stand fast and prepare yourself,
for the sword will devour those about you.” # Jer 46:10
15Why have your valiant men become prostrate?
They do not stand because the Lord has thrust them down. # Ps 18:14; Isa 66:15–16
16He made many to fall.
Indeed, each one has fallen upon another. # Lev 26:36–37
Then they said, “Arise and let us go back
to our own people and to the land of our birth, # Jer 51:9
away from the oppressing sword.”
17They cried there,
“Pharaoh king of Egypt is a tumult.
He has let the time appointed pass by!” # Ex 15:9; Isa 19:11–16
18As I live, says the King
whose name is the Lord of Hosts, # Jer 48:15
surely as Tabor # Jos 19:22 is among the mountains,
and as Carmel by the sea, so he shall come.
19O daughter dwelling in Egypt,
prepare your baggage for captivity, # Isa 20:4
for Memphis will become desolate,
it will even be burned down without an inhabitant.
20Egypt is like a very fair heifer, # Hos 10:11
but destruction comes,
it comes out of the north. # Jer 47:2
21Also her mercenaries are in her midst # 2Ki 7:6
like fat bulls,
for they also have turned back and have fled away together. # Jer 46:5
They did not stand their ground
because the day of their calamity has come upon them,
even the time of their punishment.
22Its sound goes along like a serpent, # Isa 29:4
for they march on as an army,
and come against her with axes,
as choppers of wood. # Isa 14:8
23They have cut down her forest,
says the Lord.
Surely it will not be found any more,
even though they are now more numerous than the grasshoppers,
and are innumerable. # Jdg 6:5; 7:12
24The daughter of Egypt has been humiliated;
she has been delivered into the hand of the people of the north. # Jer 1:15
25The Lord of Hosts, the God of Israel, says: Behold, I will punish Amon of Thebes, and Pharaoh, and Egypt, with their gods and their kings, # Ex 12:12 even Pharaoh and all those who trust in him. # Isa 20:5–6 26And I shall deliver them into the hand of those who seek their lives and into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon # Jer 44:30; Eze 32:11 and into the hand of his servants. But afterwards it will be inhabited, as in the days of old, says the Lord.
God Will Save Israel
27But do not fear, O My servant Jacob,
and do not be dismayed, O Israel.
For behold, I will save you from afar off,
and your seed from the land of their captivity; # Isa 43:5; Jer 30:10–11
and Jacob shall return and be in rest and at ease,
and no one shall make him afraid.
28Do not fear, O Jacob My servant,
says the Lord, for I am with you;
for I will make a full end of all the nations
where I have driven you.
However, I will not make a full end of you, # Jer 4:27; 10:24
but correct you in measure,
and I will not leave you wholly unpunished.
