Jeremiah 43

The People Go to Egypt
1I told the people everything the Lord had told me. 2But Azariah, Johanan#43.2 Azariah, Johanan: Hebrew “Azariah son of Hoshaiah, Johanan son of Kareah.” and some other arrogant men said to me, “You're lying! The Lord didn't tell you to say that we shouldn't go to Egypt. 3Baruch son of Neriah must have told you to say that. He wants the Babylonians to capture us, so they can take us away to Babylonia or even kill us.”
4Johanan, the other army officers, and everyone else refused to stay in Judah in spite of the Lord's command. 5#2 K 25.26. So Johanan and the officers led us away toward Egypt. The group that left Judah included those who had been scattered in other countries and who had then come back to live in Judah. 6Baruch and I and others in the group had been staying with Gedaliah, because Nebuzaradan, the Babylonian officer in charge of the guard, had ordered him to take care of the king's daughters and quite a few men, women, and children.
7The people disobeyed the Lord and went to Egypt. The group had settled in Tahpanhes, 8when the Lord told me:
9Jeremiah, carry some large stones to the entrance of the government building in Tahpanhes. Bury the stones underneath the brick pavement#43.9 underneath the brick pavement: One possible meaning for the difficult Hebrew text. and be sure the Jews are watching.
10Then tell them that I, the Lord All-Powerful, the God of Israel, have sent for my servant, Nebuchadnezzar#43.10 Nebuchadnezzar: See the note at 21.2. of Babylonia. I will bring him here and have him set up his throne and his royal tent over these stones that I told you to bury. 11He will attack Egypt and kill many of its people; others will die of disease or be dragged away as prisoners. 12-13I will let him set Egypt's temples on fire, and he will either burn or carry off their idols. He will destroy the sacred monuments at the temple of the sun-god.#43.12,13 at the temple of the sun-god: Or “in the city of Heliopolis.” Then Nebuchadnezzar will pick the land clean, just like a shepherd picking the lice off his clothes. And he will return safely home.

Jeremiah 43

Off to Egypt with Jeremiah and Baruch
1When Jeremiah finished telling the people all the words of the LORD their God—he didn’t omit anything the LORD sent him to convey— 2Azariah, Hoshaiah’s son, and Johanan, Kareah’s son, and all the arrogant men said to Jeremiah, “You’re lying to us! The LORD our God didn’t send you to tell us not to go to Egypt to live. 3It’s Baruch, Neriah’s son, who put you up to it so that we end up in the hands of the Babylonians, who will either kill us or deport us to Babylon.”
4So Johanan, Kareah’s son, and all the army officers and the rest of the people disobeyed the LORD’s command to stay in the land of Judah. 5Johanan, Kareah’s son, and all the army officers took the remaining Judeans who had returned to the land of Judah after being scattered among the nations— 6men, women, children, the king’s daughters, everyone Nebuzaradan the captain of the special guard had left with Gedaliah, Ahikam’s son and Shaphan’s grandson, including Jeremiah the prophet and Baruch, Neriah’s son. 7They went to the land of Egypt, as far as Tahpanhes, for they wouldn’t obey the LORD.
8The LORD’s word came to Jeremiah in Tahpanhes: 9Take some large stones and set them in the clay pavement#43.9 Heb uncertain in front of Pharaoh’s palace in Tahpanhes while the people of Judah are watching. 10After that, say to the people: The LORD of heavenly forces, the God of Israel, proclaims: I’m sending for my servant King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon, who#43.10 LXX; MT I will set his throne over these stones and will spread his canopy over them. 11He will come and ravage the land of Egypt:
those marked for disaster, to disaster,
and those marked for exile, to exile.
and those marked for war, to war.
12He will set on fire#43.12 LXX, Syr; MT I will set on fire the temples of the Egyptian gods. He will burn them down and carry off their gods. He will wrap the land of Egypt around himself, just as a shepherd wraps#43.12 Or picks clean his garment around himself, and he will move on unharmed.#43.12 Heb uncertain 13He will shatter the sacred pillars in the temple of the sun in Egypt and burn down the temples of the Egyptian gods.
