Jeremiah 42
42
1Johanan, Jezaniah,#42.1 Jezaniah: Hebrew “Jezaniah son of Hoshaiah”; one ancient translation “Azariah son of Hoshaiah” (see also 43.2 and the note there). the other army officers, and everyone else in the group, came to me 2and said, “Please, Jeremiah, pray to the Lord your God for us. Judah used to have many people, but as you can see, only a few of us are left. 3Ask the Lord to tell us where he wants us to go and what he wants us to do.”
4“All right,” I answered, “I will pray to the Lord your God, and I will tell you everything he says.”
5They answered, “The Lord himself will be our witness that we promise to do whatever he says, 6even if it isn't what we want to do. We will obey the Lord so that all will go well for us.”
7Ten days later, the Lord gave me an answer for 8Johanan, the officers, and the other people. So I called them together 9and told them that the Lord God of Israel had said:
You asked Jeremiah to pray and find out what you should do. 10I am sorry that I had to punish you, and so I now tell you to stay here in Judah, where I will plant you and build you up, instead of tearing you down and uprooting you. 11Don't be afraid of the King of Babylonia. I will protect you from him, 12and I will even force him to have mercy on you and give back your farms.
13But you might keep on saying, “We won't stay here in Judah, and we won't obey the Lord our God. 14We are going to Egypt, where there is plenty of food and no danger of war.”
15People of Judah, you survived when the Babylonian army attacked. Now you are planning to move to Egypt, and if you do go, this is what will happen. 16-17You are afraid of war, starvation, and disease here in Judah, but they will follow you to Egypt and kill you there. None of you will survive the disasters I will send.
18I, the Lord, was angry with the people of Jerusalem and punished them. And if you go to Egypt, I will be angry and punish you the same way. You will never again see your homeland. People will be horrified at what I do to you, and they will use the name of your city as a curse word.
Jeremiah Gives a Warning
19I told the people:
You escaped the disaster that struck Judah, but now the Lord warns you to stay away from Egypt. 20You asked me to pray and find out what the Lord our God wants you to do, and you promised to obey him. But that was a terrible mistake, 21because now that I have given you the Lord's answer, you refuse to obey him. 22And so, you will die in Egypt from war, hunger, and disease.

Jeremiah 42
42
The Flight to Egypt Forbidden
1Now all the captains of the forces, #Jer. 40:8, 13; 41:11Johanan the son of Kareah, Jezaniah the son of Hoshaiah, and all the people, from the least to the greatest, came near 2and said to Jeremiah the prophet, #Jer. 15:11“Please, let our petition be acceptable to you, and #Ex. 8:28; 1 Sam. 7:8; 12:19; 1 Kin. 13:6; Is. 37:4; Jer. 37:3; Acts 8:24; (James 5:16)pray for us to the Lord your God, for all this remnant (since we are left but #Lev. 26:22; Deut. 28:62; Is. 1:9; Lam. 1:1a few of many, as you can see), 3that the Lord your God may show us #Ezra 8:21the way in which we should walk and the thing we should do.”
4Then Jeremiah the prophet said to them, “I have heard. Indeed, I will pray to the Lord your God according to your words, and it shall be, that #1 Kin. 22:14; Jer. 23:28whatever the Lord answers you, I will declare it to you. I will #1 Sam. 3:17, 18; Ps. 40:10; Acts 20:20keep nothing back from you.”
5So they said to Jeremiah, #Gen. 31:50; Judg. 11:10; Jer. 43:2; Mic. 1:2; Mal. 2:14; 3:5“Let the Lord be a true and faithful witness between us, if we do not do according to everything which the Lord your God sends us by you. 6Whether it is pleasing or displeasing, we will #Ex. 24:7; Deut. 5:27; Josh. 24:24obey the voice of the Lord our God to whom we send you, #Deut. 5:29, 33; 6:3; Jer. 7:23that it may be well with us when we obey the voice of the Lord our God.”
7And it happened after ten days that the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah. 8Then he called Johanan the son of Kareah, all the captains of the forces which were with him, and all the people from the least even to the greatest, 9and said to them, “Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, to whom you sent me to present your petition before Him: 10‘If you will still remain in this land, then #Jer. 24:6; 31:28; 33:7; Ezek. 36:36I will build you and not pull you down, and I will plant you and not pluck you up. For I #Deut. 32:36; (Jer. 18:8)relent concerning the disaster that I have brought upon you. 11Do not be afraid of the king of Babylon, of whom you are afraid; do not be afraid of him,’ says the Lord, #Num. 14:9; 2 Chr. 32:7, 8; Is. 8:9, 10; 43:2, 5; Jer. 1:19; 15:20; Rom. 8:31‘for I am with you, to save you and deliver you from his hand. 12And #Neh. 1:11; Ps. 106:46; Prov. 16:7I will show you mercy, that he may have mercy on you and cause you to return to your own land.’
13“But if #Jer. 44:16you say, ‘We will not dwell in this land,’ disobeying the voice of the Lord your God, 14saying, ‘No, but we will go to the land of #Is. 31:1; Jer. 41:17; 43:7Egypt where we shall see no war, nor hear the sound of the trumpet, nor be hungry for bread, and there we will dwell’— 15Then hear now the word of the Lord, O remnant of Judah! Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: ‘If you #Deut. 17:16; Jer. 44:12–14wholly set #Luke 9:51your faces to enter Egypt, and go to dwell there, 16then it shall be that the #Jer. 44:13, 27; Ezek. 11:8; Amos 9:1–4sword which you feared shall overtake you there in the land of Egypt; the famine of which you were afraid shall follow close after you there in Egypt; and there you shall die. 17So shall it be with all the men who set their faces to go to Egypt to dwell there. They shall die by the sword, by famine, and by pestilence. And #Jer. 44:14, 28none of them shall remain or escape from the disaster that I will bring upon them.’
18“For thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: ‘As My anger and My fury have been #2 Chr. 36:16–19; Jer. 7:20poured out on the inhabitants of Jerusalem, so will My fury be poured out on you when you enter Egypt. And #Deut. 29:21; Is. 65:15; Jer. 18:16; 24:9; 26:6; 29:18, 22; 44:12you shall be an oath, an astonishment, a curse, and a reproach; and you shall see this place no more.’
19“The Lord has said concerning you, O remnant of Judah, #Deut. 17:16; Is. 30:1–7‘Do not go to Egypt!’ Know certainly that I have admonished you this day. 20For you were hypocrites in your hearts when you sent me to the Lord your God, saying, ‘Pray for us to the Lord our God, and according to all that the Lord your God says, so declare to us and we will do it.’ 21And I have this day declared it to you, but you have #Is. 30:1–7not obeyed the voice of the Lord your God, or anything which He has sent you by me. 22Now therefore, know certainly that you #Jer. 42:17; Ezek. 6:11shall die by the sword, by famine, and by pestilence in the place where you desire to go to dwell.”
