Jeremiah 30

The Lord Will Rescue Israel and Judah
1-2The Lord God of Israel said, “Jeremiah, get a scroll#30.1,2 scroll: A roll of paper or special leather used for writing on. and write down everything I have told you. 3Someday I will let my people from both Israel#30.3 Israel: The northern kingdom. and Judah return to the land I gave their ancestors.”
4-5Then the Lord told me to say to Israel and Judah:
Screams of terror are heard,
with no word of peace.
6Can men give birth?
Then why do I see them
looking so pale
and clutching their stomachs
like women in labor?
7My people, soon you will suffer
worse than ever before,
but I will save you.
8Now you are slaves
of other nations,
but I will break the chains
and smash the yokes#30.8 yokes: See the note at 27.1,2.
that keep you in slavery.
9Then you will be my servants,
and I will choose a king for you
from the family of David.
* 10#Jr 46.27,28. Israel,#30.10 Israel: The people of the northern and southern kingdoms. you belong to me,
so don't be afraid.
You deserved to be punished;
that's why I scattered you
in distant nations.
But I am with you,
and someday I will destroy
those nations.
11Then I will bring you
and your descendants
back to your land,
where I will protect you
and give you peace.
Then your fears will be gone.
I, the Lord, have spoken.
The Lord Will Heal Israel and Judah
12The Lord said:
My people, you are wounded
and near death.
13You are accused of a crime
with no one to defend you,
and you are covered with sores
that no medicine can cure.
* 14Your friends have forgotten you;
they don't care anymore.
Even I have acted like an enemy.
And because your sins
are horrible and countless,
I will be cruel
as I punish you.
15So don't bother to cry out
for relief from your pain.
16But if your enemies try to rob
or destroy you,
I will rob and destroy them,
and they will be led as captives
to foreign lands.
17No one wants you as a friend
or cares what happens to you.
But I will heal your injuries,
and you will get well.
The Lord Will Rescue Israel and Judah
18The Lord said:
Israel, I will be kind to you
and let you come home.
Jerusalem now lies in ruins,
but you will rebuild it,
complete with a new palace.#30.18 Jerusalem … palace: Or “Your towns lie in ruins, but you will rebuild them, and your homes will be where they were before.”
19Other nations will respect
and honor you.
Your homes will be filled
with children,
and you will celebrate,
singing praises to me.
20It will be just like old times.
Your nation will worship me,
and I will punish anyone
who abuses you.
21One of your own people
will become your ruler.
And when I invite him
to come near me
at the place of worship,
he will do so.
No one would dare to come near
without being invited.
22You will be my people,
and I will be your God.
I, the Lord, have spoken.
23I am furious!
And like a violent storm
I will strike those
who do wrong.
24I won't calm down
until I have finished
what I have decided to do.
Someday, you will understand
what I mean.

Restoration from Captivity
1This is the word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord. 2“This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: Write on a scroll all the words that I have spoken to you,#Ex 17:14; 34:1,27; Nm 5:23; Dt 17:18; 27:3; 31:19; Is 30:8; Jr 36:2,28; Ezk 43:11; Hs 8:12; Hab 2:2; 1Co 14:37; Rv 1:11; 10:4; 14:13; 19:9; 21:5 3for look, the days are coming” — this is the Lord’s declaration — “when I will restore the fortunes#30:3 Or will end the captivity of my people Israel and Judah,”#Jr 33:7,11; Ezk 37:15–23; 39:25; Jl 3:1; Am 9:14 says the Lord. “I will restore them to the land I gave to their ancestors and they will possess it.”
4These are the words the Lord spoke to Israel and Judah. 5This is what the Lord says:
We have heard a cry of terror,
of dread — there is no peace.
6Ask and see
whether a male can give birth.
Why then do I see every man
with his hands on his stomach like a woman in labor
and every face turned pale?#Ps 48:6; Is 13:8; 21:3; 42:14; Jr 4:31; 6:24; 13:21; 22:23; 50:43; Mc 4:9–10; 1Th 5:3
7How awful that day will be!#Jl 2:11; Zph 1:14
There will be no other like it!#Dn 12:1
It will be a time of trouble for Jacob,
but he will be saved out of it.
8On that day —
this is the declaration of the Lord of Armies —
I will break his yoke from your neck#Gn 27:40; Jr 2:20; 28:4,11; Ezk 34:27; Nah 1:13
and tear off your chains,#Jr 27:2
and strangers will never again enslave him.#Ezk 34:27
9They will serve the Lord their God
and David their king,
whom I will raise up for them.#Is 55:3–5; Ezk 34:23–24; 37:24–25; Hs 3:5; Lk 1:69; Ac 13:23,34
10As for you, my servant Jacob,#Is 41:8; 44:2; 45:4; 48:20; Jr 46:27; Ezk 28:25; 37:25
do not be afraid —
this is the Lord’s declaration —
and do not be discouraged, Israel,
for without fail I will save you out of a distant place,
your descendants, from the land of their captivity!
Jacob will return and have calm and quiet
with no one to frighten him.#Lv 26:6; Jr 46:27; Ezk 34:28; 39:26; Mc 4:4; Zph 3:13
11For I will be with you —
this is the Lord’s declaration —
to save you!#2Kg 19:34; Is 37:35; Jr 15:20
I will bring destruction on all the nations
where I have scattered you;
however, I will not bring destruction on you.
I will discipline you justly,
and I will by no means leave you unpunished.#Ex 34:7; Jr 46:27–28
Healing Zion’s Wounds
12For this is what the Lord says:
Your injury is incurable;
your wound most severe.#Jr 10:19; 15:18; 17:9
13You have no defender for your case.#Hs 5:13
There is no remedy for your sores,
and no healing for you.#30:13 Or No one pleads that your sores should be healed. There is no remedy for you.
14All your lovers have forgotten you;#Jr 4:30; Lm 1:19
they no longer look for you,
for I have struck you as an enemy would,
with the discipline#Jr 2:30; 5:3; 7:28 of someone cruel,#Is 13:9
because of your enormous guilt
and your innumerable sins.
15Why do you cry out about your injury?
Your pain has no cure!
I have done these things to you
because of your enormous guilt
and your innumerable sins.#Jr 5:6; Am 5:12
16Nevertheless, all who devoured you will be devoured,#Jr 10:25
and all your adversaries — all of them —
will go off into exile.
Those who plunder you will be plundered,
and all who raid you will be raided.#Ezk 39:10; Hab 2:8
17But I will bring you health#Is 58:8; Jr 8:22; 33:6
and will heal you of your wounds —
this is the Lord’s declaration —
for they call you Outcast,
Zion whom no one cares about.
Restoration of the Land
18This is what the Lord says:
I will certainly restore the fortunes#30:18 Or certainly end the captivity of Jacob’s tents#Jr 30:3
and show compassion#Jr 12:15; 31:20; 33:26; 42:12 on his dwellings.
Every city will be rebuilt on its mound;
every citadel will stand on its proper site.
19Thanksgiving will come out of them,
a sound of rejoicing.
I will multiply them, and they will not decrease;#Jr 29:6
I will honor them, and they will not be insignificant.
20His children will be as in past days;
his congregation will be established in my presence.
I will punish all his oppressors.#Jdg 10:12; Is 19:20–25
21Jacob’s leader will be one of them;
his ruler will issue from him.
I will invite him to me, and he will approach me,#Nm 16:5
for who would otherwise risk his life to approach me?
This is the Lord’s declaration.
22You will be my people,
and I will be your God.#Jr 11:4; 24:7; 31:33
The Wrath of God
23Look, a storm from the Lord!#Ps 83:15; Is 29:6; Zch 9:14
Wrath has gone out,
a churning storm.
It will whirl about the heads of the wicked.
24The Lord’s burning anger will not turn back
until he has completely fulfilled the purposes of his heart.
In time to come you will understand it.#Jr 23:19–20
