Jeremiah and the Clay Jar
1The Lord said:
Jeremiah, go to the pottery shop and buy a clay jar. Then take along some of the city officials and leading priests 2#2 K 23.10; Jr 7.30-32; 32.34,35. and go to Hinnom Valley, just outside Potsherd#19.2 Potsherd: A piece of broken pottery. Gate. Tell the people that I have said:
3I am the Lord All-Powerful, the God of Israel, and you kings of Judah and you people of Jerusalem had better pay attention. I am going to bring so much trouble on this valley that everyone who hears about it will be shocked. 4-5#Lv 18.21. The people of Judah stopped worshiping me and made this valley into a place of worship for Baal and other gods that have never helped them or their ancestors or their kings. And they have committed murder here, burning their young, innocent children as sacrifices to Baal. I have never even thought of telling you to do that. 6So watch out! Someday this place will no longer be called Topheth or Hinnom Valley. It will be called Slaughter Valley!
7You people of Judah and Jerusalem may have big plans, but here in this valley I'll ruin#19.7 ruin: In Hebrew “ruin” sounds like “jar” (see verse 1). those plans. I'll let your enemies kill you, and I'll tell the birds and wild animals to eat your dead bodies. 8I will turn Jerusalem into a pile of rubble, and every passerby will be shocked and horrified and will make insulting remarks. 9And while your enemies are trying to break through your city walls to kill you, the food supply will run out. You will become so hungry that you will eat the flesh of your friends and even of your own children.
10Jeremiah, as soon as you have said this, smash the jar while the people are watching. 11Then tell them that I have also said:
I am the Lord All-Powerful, and I warn you that I will shatter Judah and Jerusalem just like this jar that is broken beyond repair. You will bury your dead here in Topheth, but so many of you will die that there won't be enough room.
12-13I will make Jerusalem as unclean as Topheth, by filling the city with your dead bodies. I will do this because you and your kings have gone up to the roofs of your houses and burned incense to the stars in the sky, as though they were gods. And you have given sacrifices of wine to foreign gods.
Jeremiah Speaks in the Temple Courtyard
14I went to Topheth, where I told the people what the Lord had said. Then I went to the temple courtyard and shouted to the people, 15“Listen, everyone! Some time ago, the Lord All-Powerful, the God of Israel, warned you that he would bring disaster on Jerusalem and all nearby villages. But you were stubborn and refused to listen. Now the Lord is going to bring the disaster he promised.”

The Sign of the Broken Flask
1Thus says the Lord: “Go and get a potter’s earthen flask, and take some of the elders of the people and some of the elders of the priests. 2And go out to #Josh. 15:8; 2 Kin. 23:10; Jer. 7:31; 32:35the Valley of the Son of Hinnom, which is by the entry of the Potsherd Gate; and proclaim there the words that I will tell you, 3#Jer. 17:20and say, ‘Hear the word of the Lord, O kings of Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem. Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: “Behold, I will bring such a catastrophe on this place, that whoever hears of it, his ears will #1 Sam. 3:11; 2 Kin. 21:12tingle.
4“Because they #Deut. 28:20; Is. 65:11; Jer. 2:13, 17, 19; 15:6; 17:13have forsaken Me and made this an alien place, because they have burned incense in it to other gods whom neither they, their fathers, nor the kings of Judah have known, and have filled this place with #2 Kin. 21:12; Jer. 2:34; 7:6the blood of the innocents 5#Num. 22:41; Jer. 7:31; 32:35(they have also built the high places of Baal, to burn their sons with fire for burnt offerings to Baal, #Lev. 18:21; 2 Kin. 17:17; Ps. 106:37, 38which I did not command or speak, nor did it come into My mind), 6therefore behold, the days are coming,” says the Lord, “that this place shall no more be called Tophet or #Josh. 15:8; Jer. 7:32the Valley of the Son of Hinnom, but the Valley of Slaughter. 7And I will make void the counsel of Judah and Jerusalem in this place, #Lev. 26:17; Deut. 28:25; Jer. 15:2, 9and I will cause them to fall by the sword before their enemies and by the hands of those who seek their lives; their #Ps. 79:2; Jer. 7:33; 16:4; 34:20corpses I will give as meat for the birds of the heaven and for the beasts of the earth. 8I will make this city #Jer. 18:16; 49:13; 50:13desolate and a hissing; everyone who passes by it will be astonished and hiss because of all its plagues. 9And I will cause them to eat the #Lev. 26:29; Deut. 28:53, 55; Is. 9:20; Lam. 4:10; Ezek. 5:10flesh of their sons and the flesh of their daughters, and everyone shall eat the flesh of his friend in the siege and in the desperation with which their enemies and those who seek their lives shall drive them to despair.” ’
10#Jer. 51:63, 64“Then you shall break the flask in the sight of the men who go with you, 11and say to them, ‘Thus says the Lord of hosts: #Ps. 2:9; Is. 30:14; Jer. 13:14; Lam. 4:2; Rev. 2:27“Even so I will break this people and this city, as one breaks a potter’s vessel, which cannot be made whole again; and they shall #Jer. 7:32bury them in Tophet till there is no place to bury. 12Thus I will do to this place,” says the Lord, “and to its inhabitants, and make this city like Tophet. 13And the houses of Jerusalem and the houses of the kings of Judah shall be defiled #2 Kin. 23:10; Ps. 74:7; 79:1; Jer. 52:13; Ezek. 7:21, 22like the place of Tophet, because of all the houses on whose #2 Kin. 23:12; Jer. 32:29; Zeph. 1:5roofs they have burned incense to all the host of heaven, and #Jer. 7:18; Ezek. 20:28poured out drink offerings to other gods.” ’ ”
14Then Jeremiah came from Tophet, where the Lord had sent him to prophesy; and he stood in #2 Chr. 20:5; Jer. 26:2–8the court of the Lord’s house and said to all the people, 15“Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: ‘Behold, I will bring on this city and on all her towns all the doom that I have pronounced against it, because #Neh. 9:17, 29; Jer. 7:26; 17:23they have stiffened their necks that they might not hear My words.’ ”
