Daniel Prays for the People
1-2 #
Jr 25.11; 29.10. Daniel wrote:
Some years later, Darius the Mede,#9.1,2 Darius the Mede: See 5.31. who was the son of Xerxes,#9.1,2 Xerxes: Hebrew “Ahasuerus.” had become king of Babylonia. And during his first year as king, I found out from studying the writings of the prophets that the Lord had said to Jeremiah, “Jerusalem will lie in ruins for 70 years.”#9.1,2 70 years: See Jeremiah 25.11-13; 29.10. 3-4Then, to show my sorrow, I went without eating and dressed in sackcloth#9.3,4 sackcloth: A rough, dark-colored cloth made from goat or camel hair and used to make grain sacks. It was worn in times of trouble or sorrow. and sat in ashes. I confessed my sins and earnestly prayed to the Lord my God:
Our Lord, you are a great and fearsome God, and you faithfully keep your agreement with those who love and obey you. 5But we have sinned terribly by rebelling against you and rejecting your laws and teachings. 6We have ignored the message your servants the prophets spoke to our kings, our leaders, our ancestors, and everyone else.
7 #
Ba 1.15-17. Everything you do is right, our Lord. But still we suffer public disgrace because we have been unfaithful and have sinned against you. This includes all of us, both far and near—the people of Judah, Jerusalem, and Israel, as well as those you dragged away to foreign lands, 8and even our kings, our officials, and our ancestors. 9Lord God, you are merciful and forgiving, even though we have rebelled against you 10and rejected your teachings that came to us from your servants the prophets.
11 #
Ba 1.19-22. Everyone in Israel has stubbornly refused to obey your laws, and so those curses written by your servant Moses have fallen upon us. 12You warned us and our leaders that Jerusalem would suffer the worst disaster in human history, and you did exactly as you had threatened. 13We have not escaped any of the terrible curses written by Moses, and yet we have refused to beg you for mercy and to remind ourselves of how faithful you have always been. 14And when you finally punished us with this horrible disaster, that was also the right thing to do, because we deserved it so much.
15 #
Ba 2.11-13. Our Lord God, with your own mighty arm you rescued us from Egypt and made yourself famous to this very day, but we have sinned terribly. 16In the past, you treated us with such kindness, that we now beg you to stop being so terribly angry with Jerusalem. After all, it is your chosen city built on your holy mountain, even though it has suffered public disgrace because of our sins and those of our ancestors.
17 #
Ba 2.14. I am your servant, Lord God, and I beg you to answer my prayers and bring honor to yourself by having pity on your temple that lies in ruins. 18#Ba 2.19. Please show mercy to your chosen city, not because we deserve it, but because of your great kindness. 19Forgive us! Hurry and do something, not only for your city and your chosen people, but to bring honor to yourself.
The Seventy Weeks
Daniel wrote:
20I was still confessing my sins and those of all Israel to the Lord my God, and I was praying for the good of his holy mountain,#9.20 holy mountain: Jerusalem (see verse 16) or the temple. 21#Lk 1.19,26. when Gabriel suddenly came flying in at the time of the evening sacrifice. This was the same Gabriel I had seen in my vision, 22and he explained:
Daniel, I am here to help you understand the vision. 23God thinks highly of you, and at the very moment you started praying, I was sent to give you the answer. 24God has decided that for 70 weeks,#9.24 70 weeks: Or “70 times 7 years.” your people and your holy city must suffer as the price of their sins. Then evil will disappear, and justice will rule forever; the visions and words of the prophets will come true, and a most holy place will be dedicated.#9.24 a most holy place will be dedicated: Or “God's Holy One will appear.”
25You need to realize that from the command to rebuild Jerusalem until the coming of the Chosen Leader,#9.25 the Chosen Leader: Or “a chosen leader.” In Hebrew the word “chosen” means “to pour oil (on someone's head).” In Old Testament times it was the custom to pour oil on a person's head when that person was chosen to be a priest or a king. it will be 7 weeks and another 62 weeks.#9.25 7 weeks and another 62 weeks: Or “7 times 7 years and another 62 times 7 years.” Streets will be built in Jerusalem, and a trench will be dug around the city for protection, but these will be difficult times.#9.25 it will be 7 … difficult times: Or “it will be 7 weeks. Then streets will be built in Jerusalem, and a trench will be dug around the city for protection. But Jerusalem will have difficult times for 62 weeks.” 26At the end of the 62 weeks,#9.26 62 weeks: Or “62 times 7 years.” the Chosen Leader#9.26 the Chosen Leader: See the note at 9.25. will be killed and left with nothing.#9.26 left with nothing: Or “no one will take his place.”
A foreign ruler and his army will sweep down like a mighty flood, leaving both the city and the temple in ruins, and war and destruction will continue until the end, just as God has decided. 27#Dn 11.31; 12.11; 1 Macc 1.44-50,54; Mt 24.15; Mk 13.14. For one week#9.27 one week: Or “7 years.” this foreigner#9.27 this foreigner: Or “the Chosen Leader.” will make a firm agreement with many people, and halfway through this week,#9.27 halfway through this week: Or “for half of this week of 7 years.” he will end all sacrifices and offerings. Then the “Horrible Thing” that causes destruction will be put there. And it will stay there until the time God has decided to destroy this one who destroys.

Daniel’s Prayer for His People
1 # ch. 11:1 In the first year of #See ch. 5:31 Darius the son of Ahasuerus, by descent a #[ch. 8:20] Mede, who was made king over the realm of the #ch. 5:30Chaldeans— 2in the first year of his reign, I, Daniel, perceived in the books the number of years that, according to #[Ezra 1:1; Jer. 25:12]the word of the Lord to Jeremiah the prophet, must pass before the end of the desolations of Jerusalem, namely, seventy years.
3Then I turned my face to the Lord God, seeking him by #ver. 17, 18, 23; [Neh. 1:4]prayer and pleas for mercy with fasting and sackcloth and ashes. 4I prayed to the Lord my God and #ver. 20; [Ezra 10:1; Neh. 1:6] made confession, saying, #Neh. 1:5; 9:32 “O Lord, the #Neh. 1:5; 9:32 great and awesome God, who #Deut. 7:9keeps covenant and steadfast love with those who love him and keep his commandments, 5#ver. 15 we have sinned and done wrong and acted wickedly #Lam. 3:42and rebelled, turning aside from your commandments and rules. 6#2 Chr. 36:15, 16 We have not listened to #Ezra 9:11; Zech. 1:6 your servants the prophets, who spoke in your name to #Ezra 9:7; Neh. 9:34our kings, our princes, and our fathers, and to all the people of the land. 7To you, #[ver. 14; Lam. 1:18] O Lord, belongs righteousness, but to us open shame, as at this day, to the men of Judah, to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and to all Israel, #[Esth. 9:20] those who are near and #[Esth. 9:20] those who are far away, in #See Jer. 8:3 all the lands to which you have driven them, because of #Lev. 26:40the treachery that they have committed against you. 8To us, O Lord, belongs open shame, to our kings, to our princes, and to our fathers, because #[See ver. 5 above]we have sinned against you. 9#Neh. 9:17; Ps. 86:15To the Lord our God belong mercy and forgiveness, for we have rebelled against him 10#[See ver. 6 above] and have not obeyed the voice of the Lord our God by walking in his laws, which he set before us by #[See ver. 6 above]his servants the prophets. 11#See Isa. 1:4-6 All Israel has transgressed your law and turned aside, #[Jer. 40:3; 44:23] refusing to obey your voice. #Jer. 44:22 And the curse and oath #See Lev. 26:14-45; Deut. 28:15-68 that are written in the Law of #1 Chr. 6:49; 2 Chr. 24:9; Neh. 10:29 Moses the servant of God have been poured out upon us, because #[See ver. 5 above]we have sinned against him. 12He has confirmed his words, which he spoke against us and against #[Ps. 82:2, 3] our rulers who ruled us,#9:12 Or our judges who judged us by #Jer. 39:16 bringing upon us a great calamity. #Ezek. 5:9; [Lam. 1:12]For under the whole heaven there has not been done anything like what has been done against Jerusalem. 13#[See ver. 11 above] As it is written in the Law of Moses, all this calamity has come upon us; yet we have not entreated the favor of the Lord our God, #Hos. 7:10turning from our iniquities and gaining insight by your truth. 14#[Jer. 1:12] Therefore the Lord has kept ready the calamity and has brought it upon us, #Neh. 9:33; See ver. 7 for the Lord our God is righteous in all the works that he has done, and #ver. 10we have not obeyed his voice. 15And now, O Lord our God, who brought your people out of the land of Egypt #Ex. 32:11; [Ex. 6:1; Neh. 1:10] with a mighty hand, and #Ex. 14:18; Neh. 9:10 have made a name for yourself, as at this day, #See ver. 5we have sinned, we have done wickedly.
16“O Lord, #Ps. 31:1; 71:2 according to all your righteous acts, let your anger and your wrath turn away from your city Jerusalem, #ver. 20; ch. 11:45; Jer. 31:23; Zech. 8:3 your holy hill, #Lam. 1:5 because for our sins, and for #[Ex. 20:5] the iniquities of our fathers, #Lam. 2:15, 16 Jerusalem and your people have become #Ps. 44:13; 79:4; Ezek. 36:4; Mic. 6:16a byword among all who are around us. 17Now therefore, O our God, listen to the prayer of your servant and to his pleas for mercy, and for your own sake, O Lord,#9:17 Hebrew for the Lord’s sake #Num. 6:25 make your face to shine upon #Lam. 5:18your sanctuary, which is desolate. 18#2 Kgs. 19:16; Isa. 37:17 O my God, incline your ear and hear. Open your eyes and see #ver. 26; See ver. 27 our desolations, and #Jer. 25:29the city that is called by your name. For we do not present our pleas before you because of our righteousness, but because of your great mercy. 19O Lord, hear; O Lord, forgive. O Lord, pay attention and act. #Ps. 40:17; 70:5 Delay not, #Ps. 25:11; 79:9 for your own sake, O my God, because #[See ver. 18 above] your city and #Jer. 14:9your people are called by your name.”
Gabriel Brings an Answer

Isa. 65:24 While I was speaking and praying, confessing my sin and the sin of my people Israel, and presenting my plea before the Lord my God for #See ver. 16the holy hill of my God, 21while I was speaking in prayer, the man #See ch. 8:16 Gabriel, whom I had seen in the vision at the first, #See ch. 8:18 came to me in swift flight at #Ex. 29:39; [1 Kgs. 18:36; Ezra 9:4, 5]the time of the evening sacrifice. 22#[ch. 8:16] He made me understand, speaking with me and saying, “O Daniel, I have now come out to give you #[ch. 1:4, 17]insight and understanding. 23#[ver. 20] At the beginning of your pleas for mercy a word went out, #[ch. 10:12, 14] and I have come to tell it to you, for #ch. 10:11, 19 you are greatly loved. Therefore consider the word #[Matt. 24:15; Mark 13:14]and understand the vision.
