The Descendants of Judah
1-2Jacob#2.1,2 Jacob: See the note at 1.34. was the father of twelve sons: Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, Zebulun, Dan, Joseph, Benjamin, Naphtali, Gad, and Asher.
3Judah and his Canaanite wife Bathshua had three sons: Er, Onan, and Shelah. But the Lord had Er put to death, because he disobeyed and did what the Lord hated. 4Judah and his daughter-in-law Tamar also had two sons: Perez and Zerah.
5Perez was the father of Hezron and Hamul. 6Zerah was the father of Zimri, Ethan, Heman, Calcol, and Darda.#2.6 Darda: Most Hebrew manuscripts and two ancient translations (see also 1 Kings 4.30,31); some Hebrew manuscripts “Dara.” 7#Js 7.1. Achan,#2.7 Achan: The Hebrew text has “Achar,” which means “trouble.” who was a descendant of Zerah and the son of Carmi, caused trouble for Israel, because he kept for himself things that belonged only to the Lord.#2.7 Achan … the Lord: See Joshua 7.1-26. 8Ethan's son was Azariah.
The Ancestors of King David
9Hezron was the father of Jerahmeel, Ram, and Caleb.#2.9 Caleb: The Hebrew text has “Chelubai,” another form of the name. 10Ram was the father of Amminadab and the grandfather of Nahshon, a tribal leader of Judah. 11Nahshon's descendants included Salma, Boaz, 12Obed, and Jesse. 13-15Jesse had seven sons, who were born in the following order: Eliab, Abinadab, Shimea, Nethanel, Raddai, Ozem, and David. 16Jesse also had two daughters: Zeruiah and Abigail. Zeruiah was the mother of Abishai, Joab, and Asahel. 17Abigail's husband was Jether, who was a descendant of Ishmael, and their son was Amasa.
The Descendants of Hezron
18Hezron's son Caleb married Azubah, and their daughter was Jerioth,#2.18 married Azubah … Jerioth: One possible meaning for the difficult Hebrew text. the mother of Jesher, Shobab, and Ardon. 19After the death of Azubah, Caleb married Ephrath. Their son Hur 20was the father of Uri and the grandfather of Bezalel.
21When Hezron was 60 years old, he married the daughter of Machir, who settled the region of Gilead. Their son Segub 22was the father of Jair, who ruled 23 villages in the region of Gilead. 23Some time later the nations of Geshur and Aram captured 60 towns in that region, including the villages that belonged to Jair, as well as the town of Kenath and the nearby villages. Everyone from the region of Gilead was a descendant of Machir.
24After the death of Hezron, Caleb married Ephrath, his father's wife. Their son was Ashhur,#2.24 After the death of Hezron … Ashhur: Two ancient translations; Hebrew “After Hezron died in Caleb-Ephrathah, Abijah his wife gave birth to Ashhur.” who later settled the town of Tekoa.
The Descendants of Jerahmeel
25Jerahmeel, Hezron's oldest son, was the father of Ram, Bunah, Oren, Ozem, and Ahijah. 26Jerahmeel had a second wife, Atarah, who gave birth to Onam. 27Ram was the father of Maaz, Jamin, and Eker. 28Onam was the father of Shammai and Jada.
Shammai was the father of Nadab and Abishur. 29Abishur married Abihail, and their two sons were Ahban and Molid. 30Nadab was the father of Seled and Appaim. Seled had no children; 31Appaim's son was Ishi, the father of Sheshan and the grandfather of Ahlai.
32Jada was the father of Jether and Jonathan. Jether had no children, 33but Jonathan had two sons: Peleth and Zaza.
34-35Sheshan had no sons, and so he let one of his daughters marry Jarha, his Egyptian slave. Their son was Attai, 36the father of Nathan and the grandfather of Zabad. 37-41Zabad's descendants included Ephlal, Obed, Jehu, Azariah, Helez, Eleasah, Sismai, Shallum, Jekamiah, and Elishama.
The Descendants of Caleb
42Caleb, Jerahmeel's brother, had the following descendants: Mesha,#2.42 Mesha: Hebrew; one ancient translation “Mareshah.” Ziph, Mareshah,#2.42 following descendants … Mareshah: One possible meaning for the difficult Hebrew text. Hebron, 43and Hebron's four sons, Korah, Tappuah, Rekem, and Shema. 44Shema was the father of Raham and the grandfather of Jorkeam. Rekem was the father of Shammai, 45the grandfather of Maon, and the great-grandfather of Bethzur.
46Ephah was one of Caleb's wives,#2.46 wives: This translates a Hebrew word for women who were legally bound to a man, but without the full privileges of a wife. and their sons were Haran, Moza, and Gazez. Haran named his son after his brother Gazez. 47Ephah was the daughter of Jahdai, who was also the father of Regem, Jotham, Geshan, Pelet, and Shaaph.#2.47 Shaaph: One possible meaning for the difficult Hebrew text of verse 47.
48Maacah was another of Caleb's wives,#2.48 wives: See the note at 2.46. and their sons were Sheber and Tirhanah. 49Later, they had two more sons: Shaaph the father of Madmannah, and Sheva the father of Machbenah and Gibea. Caleb's daughter was Achsah. 50-51All of these were Caleb's descendants.
Hur, the oldest son of Caleb and Ephrath, had three sons: Shobal, Salma, and Hareph, who settled the town of Beth-Gader. 52Shobal, who settled the town of Kiriath-Jearim, was the ancestor of Haroeh, half of the Menuhoth clan, 53and the clans that lived near Kiriath-Jearim; they were the Ithrites, the Puthites, the Shumathites, and the Mishraites. The Zorathites and the Eshtaolites were descendants of the Mishraites.
54Salma settled the town of Bethlehem and was the ancestor of the Netophathites, the people of Atroth-Bethjoab, half of the Manahathite clan, and the Zorites. 55Salma was also the ancestor of the clans in Jabez that kept the court and government records; they were the Tirathites, the Shimeathites, and the Sucathites. These clans were the descendants of Hammath the Kenite, who was also the ancestor of the Rechabites.

Israel and Judah’s Descendants
1These are the sons of Israel: Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, Zebulun,
2Dan, Joseph, Benjamin, Naphtali, Gad and Asher.
3The sons of Judah: Er, Onan and Shelah—the three were born to him by Bath-shua the Canaanite woman. But Er, Judah’s firstborn, was wicked in the sight of Adonai, so He put him to death.
4Then Tamar his daughter-in-law bore him Perez and Zerah. Judah had five sons in all.
5The sons of Perez: Hezron and Hamul.
6The sons of Zerah: Zimri, Ethan, Heman, Calcol and Dara, five in all.
7The sons of Carmi: Achar, the troubler of Israel who violated the ban of devoted things.
8The sons of Ethan: Azariah.
9The sons of Hezron who were born to him: Jerahmeel, Ram and Chelubai.
10Ram fathered Amminadab; Amminadab fathered Nahshon, the leader of the children of Judah.
11Nahshon fathered Salma; Salma fathered Boaz.
12Boaz fathered Obed; Obed fathered Jesse.
13Jesse fathered Eliab his firstborn, Abinadab was second, Shimea third,
14Nethanel fourth, Raddai fifth,
15Ozem sixth, and David seventh.
16Their sisters were Zeruiah and Abigail. The three sons of Zeruiah were Abishai, Joab and Asahel.
17Abigail bore Amasa, and the father of Amasa was Jether the Ishmaelite.
18Caleb son of Hezron fathered children by Azubah his wife and by Jerioth. These were her sons: Jesher, Shobab and Ardon.
19When Azubah died, Caleb married Ephrath, who bore him Hur.
20Hur fathered Uri and Uri fathered Bezalel.
21Afterward Hezron had relations with the daughter of Machir the father of Gilead—he had married her when he was 60 years old—and she bore him Segub.
22Segub fathered Jair, who had 23 cities in the land of Gilead.
23But Geshur and Aram took the towns of Jair from them, along with Kenath and its surrounding villages, 60 towns. All these were the sons of Machir the father of Gilead.
24After the death of Hezron in Caleb-ephrath, Abijah, Hezron’s wife, bore him Ashhur the father of Tekoa.
25Now the sons of Jerahmeel, the firstborn of Hezron: Ram the firstborn, then Bunah, Oren, Ozem and Ahijah.
26Jerahmeel had another wife whose name was Atarah; she was the mother of Onam.
27The sons of Ram, the firstborn of Jerahmeel: Maaz, Jamin and Eker.
28The sons of Onam: Shammai and Jada. The sons of Shammai: Nadab and Abishur.
29The name of the wife of Abishur was Abihail, and she bore him Ahban and Molid.
30The sons of Nadab: Seled and Appaim, but Seled died without children.
31The sons of Appaim: Ishi, who was the father of Sheshan. Sheshan was the father of Ahlai.
32The sons of Jada the brother of Shammai: Jeter and Jonathan—Jeter died without sons.
33The sons of Jonathan: Pelet and Zaza. These were the sons of Jerahmeel.
34Now Sheshan had no sons, only daughters. But Sheshan had a servant, an Egyptian, whose name was Jarha.
35So Sheshan gave his daughter to Jarha his servant as a wife, and she bore him Attai.
36Then Attai fathered Nathan, and Nathan fathered Zabad.
37Zabad fathered Ephlal and Ephlal fathered Obed.
38Obed fathered Jehu, and Jehu fathered Azariah.
39Azariah fathered Helez, and Helez fathered Eleasah.
40Eleasah fathered Sisamai, and Sisamai fathered Shallum.
41 Shallum fathered Jekamiah, and Jekamiah fathered Elishama.
42Now the sons of Caleb, the brother of Jerahmeel: Mesha his firstborn, who was the father of Ziph, and his son Mareshah the father of Hebron.
43The sons of Hebron: Korah, Tappuah, Rekem and Shema.
44Shema fathered Raham, the father of Jorkeam. Rekem fathered Shammai.
45The son of Shammai was Maon and Maon was the father of Beth-Zur.
46Ephah, Caleb’s concubine, bore Haran, Moza and Gazez; and Haran fathered Gazez.
47The sons of Jahdai: Regem, Jotham, Geshan, Pelet, Ephah and Shaaph.
48Maacah, Caleb’s concubine, bore Sheber and Tirhanah.
49She also bore Shaaph the father of Madmanna h, Sheba the father of Machbenah and the father of Gibea. The daughter of Caleb was Achsah.
50These were the descendants of Caleb. The sons of Hur the firstborn of Ephrath: Shobal the father of Kiriath-jearim,
51Salma the father of Beth-lehem and Hareph the father of Beth-gader.
52Shobal the father of Kiriath-jearim had sons: Haroeh, half of the Menuhites.
53The clans of Kiriath-jearim: the Itrites, the Puhtites, the Shumathites, the Mishraites; from them came the Zorathites and the Eshtaolites.
54The sons of Salma: Beth-lehem, the Netophathites, Atroth-beth-joab, half the Manahathites, the Zorites,
55and the clans of scribes who lived at Jabez: the Tirathites, the Shimeathites, and the Sucathites. These were the Kenites who descended from Hammath, the father of the Rechabites.
