Psalms 140
140
A Prayer for Protection#Ps 140 Hebrew title: A psalm by David.
1Save me, LORD, from evildoers;
keep me safe from violent people.
2They are always plotting evil,
always stirring up quarrels.
3 #
Rom 3.13
Their tongues are like deadly snakes;
their words are like a cobra's poison.
4Protect me, LORD, from the power of the wicked;
keep me safe from violent people
who plot my downfall.
5The proud have set a trap for me;
they have laid their snares
and along the path they have set traps to catch me.
6I say to the LORD, “You are my God.”
Hear my cry for help, LORD!
7My Sovereign LORD, my strong defender,
you have protected me in battle.
8 LORD, don't give the wicked what they want;
don't let their plots succeed.
9Don't let my enemies be victorious;#140.9 Probable text Don't let my enemies be victorious; Hebrew unclear.
make their threats against me fall back on them.
10May red-hot coals fall on them;
may they be thrown into a pit and never get out.
11May those who accuse others falsely not succeed;
may evil overtake violent people and destroy them.
12 LORD, I know that you defend the cause of the poor
and the rights of the needy.
13The righteous will praise you indeed;
they will live in your presence.

Prayer for Help in the Face of Enemies
For the music director. A psalm of David.#The Hebrew Bible counts the superscription as the first verse of the psalm; the English verse number is reduced by one
1Rescue me, O Yahweh, from evil men.#The several uses of the singular “man” in this psalm are probably collective
Preserve me from violent men,
2who plan evil things in their heart.
They stir up wars continually.
3They sharpen their tongue as sharp as a snake’s;
the venom of a viper is under their lips. Selah
4Protect me, O Yahweh, from the hands of the wicked.
Preserve me from violent men,
who have planned to make me stumble.#Literally “push my steps”
5The proud have hidden a trap for me, and cords.
They have spread out a net along the side#Literally “hand” of the path.
They have set snares for me. Selah
6I say to Yahweh, “You are my God.”
Listen, O Yahweh, to the voice of my supplications.
7O Yahweh, my Lord, the strength of my salvation,
you have covered my head in the day of battle.
8Do not grant, O Yahweh, the desires of the wicked.
Do not allow them to attain their#Hebrew “his” plan, lest they be exalted. Selah
9With respect to the head of those who surround me,
may the harm of their lips cover them.
10Let burning coals fall on them;
let them be dropped into the fire,
into bottomless pits from which they cannot rise.
11Do not let a slanderer#Literally “man of tongue” be established in the land;
as for the man of violence, let evil hunt him quickly.
12I know#According to the reading tradition (Qere) that Yahweh will maintain the cause of the afflicted,
and justice for the needy.
13Surely the righteous will give thanks to your name;
the upright will dwell in your presence.
