The Man with a Paralysed Hand
(Mt 12.9–14; Lk 6.6–11)
1Then Jesus went back to the synagogue, where there was a man who had a paralysed hand. 2Some people were there who wanted to accuse Jesus of doing wrong; so they watched him closely to see whether he would heal the man on the Sabbath. 3Jesus said to the man, “Come up here to the front.” 4Then he asked the people, “What does our Law allow us to do on the Sabbath? To help or to harm? To save someone's life or to destroy it?”
But they did not say a thing. 5Jesus was angry as he looked round at them, but at the same time he felt sorry for them, because they were so stubborn and wrong. Then he said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” He stretched it out, and it became well again. 6So the Pharisees left the synagogue and met at once with some members of Herod's party, and they made plans to kill Jesus.
A Crowd by the Lake
7Jesus and his disciples went away to Lake Galilee, and a large crowd followed him. They had come from Galilee, from Judea, 8from Jerusalem, from the territory of Idumea, from the territory on the east side of the Jordan, and from the region round the cities of Tyre and Sidon. All these people came to Jesus because they had heard of the things he was doing. 9#Mk 4.1; Lk 5.1–3The crowd was so large that Jesus told his disciples to get a boat ready for him, so that the people would not crush him. 10He had healed many people, and all those who were ill kept pushing their way to him in order to touch him. 11And whenever the people who had evil spirits in them saw him, they would fall down before him and scream, “You are the Son of God!”
12Jesus sternly ordered the evil spirits not to tell anyone who he was.
Jesus Chooses the Twelve Apostles
(Mt 10.1–4; Lk 6.12–16)
13Then Jesus went up a hill and called to himself the men he wanted. They came to him, 14and he chose twelve, whom he named apostles. “I have chosen you to be with me,” he told them. “I will also send you out to preach, 15and you will have authority to drive out demons.”
16These are the twelve he chose: Simon (Jesus gave him the name Peter); 17James and his brother John, the sons of Zebedee (Jesus gave them the name Boanerges, which means “Men of Thunder”); 18Andrew, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Thomas, James son of Alphaeus, Thaddaeus, Simon the Patriot, 19and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed Jesus.
Jesus and Beelzebul
(Mt 12.22–32; Lk 11.14–23; 12.10)
20Then Jesus went home. Again such a large crowd gathered that Jesus and his disciples had no time to eat. 21When his family heard about it, they set out to take charge of him, because people were saying, “He's gone mad!”
22 #
Mt 9.34; 10.25 Some teachers of the Law who had come from Jerusalem were saying, “He has Beelzebul in him! It is the chief of the demons who gives him the power to drive them out.”
23So Jesus called them to him and spoke to them in parables: “How can Satan drive out Satan? 24If a country divides itself into groups which fight each other, that country will fall apart. 25If a family divides itself into groups which fight each other, that family will fall apart. 26So if Satan's kingdom divides into groups, it cannot last, but will fall apart and come to an end.
27 “No one can break into a strong man's house and take away his belongings unless he first ties up the strong man; then he can plunder his house.
28 “I assure you that people can be forgiven all their sins and all the evil things they may say. # 3.28 evil things they may say ; or evil things they may say against God. 29#Lk 12.10But whoever says evil things against the Holy Spirit will never be forgiven, because he has committed an eternal sin.” 30(Jesus said this because some people were saying, “He has an evil spirit in him.”)
Jesus' Mother and Brothers
(Mt 12.46–50; Lk 8.19–21)
31Then Jesus' mother and brothers arrived. They stood outside the house and sent in a message, asking for him. 32A crowd was sitting round Jesus, and they said to him, “Look, your mother and your brothers and sisters are outside, and they want you.”
33Jesus answered, “Who is my mother? Who are my brothers?” 34He looked at the people sitting round him and said, “Look! Here are my mother and my brothers! 35Whoever does what God wants him to do is my brother, my sister, my mother.”

Mark 3

Jesus Heals a Man’s Crippled Hand
1Another time when Jesus went into a synagogue, a man with a crippled hand was there. 2Some people there wanted to see Jesus do something wrong so they could accuse him. They watched him closely to see if he would heal the man on the Sabbath day.
3Jesus said to the man with the crippled hand, “Stand up here in front of everyone.”
4Then Jesus asked the people, “Which is right on the Sabbath day: to do good, or to do evil? Is it right to save a life or to destroy one?” But they said nothing to answer him.
5Jesus was angry as he looked at the people. But he felt very sad because they were stubborn. Then he said to the man, “Let me see your hand.” The man put his hand out for Jesus, and it was healed. 6Then the Pharisees left and began making plans with the Herodians# A political group that followed Herod and his family. about a way to kill Jesus.
Many People Follow Jesus
7Jesus left with his followers for the lake. A large crowd from Galilee followed him. 8Also many people came from Judea, from Jerusalem, from Idumea, from the lands across the Jordan River, and from the area of Tyre and Sidon. They came because they had heard about all the things Jesus was doing. 9Jesus saw the crowds. So he told his followers to get a boat ready for him. He wanted the boat so that the many people would not crowd themselves against him. 10He had healed many people. So all the sick were pushing toward him to touch him. 11Some had evil spirits in them. When the evil spirits saw Jesus, they fell down before him and shouted, “You are the Son of God!” 12But Jesus strongly commanded the spirits not to tell who he was.
Jesus Chooses His 12 Apostles
13Then Jesus went up on a hill and called some men to come to him. These were the men Jesus wanted, and they went up to him. 14Jesus chose 12 men and called them apostles.# Some Greek copies do not have this phrase. He wanted these 12 to be with him, and he wanted to send them to other places to preach. 15He also wanted them to have the power to force demons out of people. 16These are the 12 men he chose: Simon (Jesus gave him the name Peter); 17James and John, the sons of Zebedee (Jesus gave them the name Boanerges, which means “Sons of Thunder”); 18Andrew, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Thomas, James the son of Alphaeus, Thaddaeus, Simon the Zealot, 19and Judas Iscariot. Judas is the one who gave Jesus to his enemies.
People Say Jesus Has a Devil
20Then Jesus went back home. But again a crowd gathered. There were so many people that Jesus and his followers could not eat. 21His family heard about all these things. They went to get him because people were saying that Jesus was out of his mind.
22And the teachers of the law from Jerusalem were saying, “Beelzebul is living inside him! He uses power from the ruler of demons to force demons out.”
23So Jesus called the people together and used stories to teach them. He said, “Satan will not force his own demons out of people. 24A kingdom that fights against itself cannot continue. 25And a family that is divided cannot continue. 26And if Satan is against himself and fights against his own people, then he cannot continue. And that is the end of Satan. 27If a person wants to enter a strong man’s house and steal his things, first he must tie up the strong man. Then the thief can steal the things from the strong man’s house. 28I tell you the truth. All sins that people do can be forgiven. And all the bad things people say against God can be forgiven. 29But any person who says bad things against the Holy Spirit will never be forgiven. He is guilty of a sin that continues forever.”
30Jesus said this because the teachers of the law said that Jesus had an evil spirit inside him.
Jesus’ True Family
31Then Jesus’ mother and brothers arrived. They stood outside and sent someone in to tell him to come out. 32Many people were sitting around Jesus. They said to him, “Your mother and brothers# Some Greek copies continue, “and sisters.” are waiting for you outside.”
33Jesus asked, “Who is my mother? Who are my brothers?” 34Then Jesus looked at those sitting around him. He said, “Here are my mother and my brothers! 35My true brother and sister and mother are those who do the things God wants.”
