Jesus and Nicodemus
1There was a Jewish leader named Nicodemus, who belonged to the party of the Pharisees. 2One night he went to Jesus and said to him, “Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher sent by God. No one could perform the miracles you are doing unless God were with him.”
3Jesus answered, “I am telling you the truth: no one can see the Kingdom of God without being born again.”#3.3; 3.7 again; or from above.
4“How can a grown man be born again?” Nicodemus asked. “He certainly cannot enter his mother's womb and be born a second time!”
5 “I am telling you the truth,” replied Jesus. “No one can enter the Kingdom of God without being born of water and the Spirit. 6A person is born physically of human parents, but is born spiritually of the Spirit. 7Do not be surprised because I tell you that you must all be born again.#3.7; 3.3 again; or from above. 8The wind blows wherever it wishes; you hear the sound it makes, but you do not know where it comes from or where it is going. It is like that with everyone who is born of the Spirit.”
9“How can this be?” asked Nicodemus.
10Jesus answered, “You are a great teacher in Israel, and you don't know this? 11I am telling you the truth: we speak of what we know and report what we have seen, yet none of you is willing to accept our message. 12You do not believe me when I tell you about the things of this world; how will you ever believe me, then, when I tell you about the things of heaven? 13And no one has ever gone up to heaven except the Son of Man, who came down from heaven.”#3.13 The quotation may continue through verse 21.

Num 21.9
As Moses lifted up the bronze snake on a pole in the desert, in the same way the Son of Man must be lifted up, 15so that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life. 16For God loved the world so much that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not die but have eternal life. 17For God did not send his Son into the world to be its judge, but to be its saviour.
18 Those who believe in the Son are not judged; but those who do not believe have already been judged, because they have not believed in God's only Son. 19This is how the judgement works: the light has come into the world, but people love the darkness rather than the light, because their deeds are evil. 20All those who do evil things hate the light and will not come to the light, because they do not want their evil deeds to be shown up. 21But those who do what is true come to the light in order that the light may show that what they did was in obedience to God.
Jesus and John
22After this, Jesus and his disciples went to the province of Judea, where he spent some time with them and baptized. 23John also was baptizing in Aenon, not far from Salim, because there was plenty of water in that place. People were going to him, and he was baptizing them. 24#Mt 14.3; Mk 6.17; Lk 3.19–20(This was before John had been put in prison.)
25Some of John's disciples began arguing with a Jew#3.25 a Jew; some manuscripts have some Jews. about the matter of ritual washing. 26So they went to John and said, “Teacher, you remember the man who was with you on the east side of the Jordan, the one you spoke about? Well, he is baptizing now, and everyone is going to him!”
27John answered, “No one can have anything unless God gives it to him. 28#Jn 1.20You yourselves are my witnesses that I said, ‘I am not the Messiah, but I have been sent ahead of him.’ 29The bridegroom is the one to whom the bride belongs; but the bridegroom's friend, who stands by and listens, is glad when he hears the bridegroom's voice. This is how my own happiness is made complete. 30He must become more important while I become less important.”
He who Comes from Heaven
31He who comes from above is greater than all. He who is from the earth belongs to the earth and speaks about earthly matters, but he who comes from heaven is above all. 32He tells what he has seen and heard, yet no one accepts his message. 33But whoever accepts his message confirms by this that God is truthful. 34The one whom God has sent speaks God's words, because God gives him the fullness of his Spirit. 35#Mt 11.27; Lk 10.22The Father loves his Son and has put everything in his power. 36Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life; whoever disobeys the Son will not have life, but will remain under God's punishment.

John 3
3
1But there was a man from among the Pharisees, his name Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews; 2he came to him by night, and said to him, Rabbi, we know that thou art come a teacher from God, for none can do these signs that thou doest unless God be with him. 3Jesus answered and said to him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except any one be born anew he cannot see the kingdom of God. 4Nicodemus says to him, How can a man be born being old? can he enter a second time into the womb of his mother and be born? 5Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except any one be born of water and of Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. 6That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. 7Do not wonder that I said to thee, It is needful that ye should be born anew. 8The wind blows where it will, and thou hearest its voice, but knowest not whence it comes and where it goes: thus is every one that is born of the Spirit. 9Nicodemus answered and said to him, How can these things be? 10Jesus answered and said to him, Thou art the teacher of Israel and knowest not these things! 11Verily, verily, I say unto thee, We speak that which we know, and we bear witness of that which we have seen, and ye receive not our witness. 12If I have said the earthly things to you, and ye believe not, how, if I say the heavenly things to you, will ye believe? 13And no one has gone up into heaven, save he who came down out of heaven, the Son of man who is in heaven. 14And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, thus must the Son of man be lifted up, 15that every one who believes on him may not perish, but have life eternal. 16For God so loved the world, that he gave his only-begotten Son, that whosoever believes on him may not perish, but have life eternal. 17For God has not sent his Son into the world that he may judge the world, but that the world may be saved through him. 18He that believes on him is not judged: but he that believes not has been already judged, because he has not believed on the name of the only-begotten Son of God. 19And this is the judgment, that light is come into the world, and men have loved darkness rather than light; for their works were evil. 20For every one that does evil hates the light, and does not come to the light that his works may not be shewn as they are; 21but he that practises the truth comes to the light, that his works may be manifested that they have been wrought in God.
22After these things came Jesus and his disciples into the land of Judaea; and there he abode with them and baptised. 23And John also was baptising in Aenon, near Salim, because there was a great deal of water there; and they came to him and were baptised: 24for John was not yet cast into prison. 25There was therefore a reasoning of the disciples of John with a Jew about purification. 26And they came to John and said to him, Rabbi, he who was with thee beyond the Jordan, to whom thou barest witness, behold, he baptises, and all come to him. 27John answered and said, A man can receive nothing unless it be given him out of heaven. 28Ye yourselves bear me witness that I said, I am not the Christ, but, that I am sent before him. 29He that has the bride is the bridegroom; but the friend of the bridegroom, who stands and hears him, rejoices in heart because of the voice of the bridegroom: this my joy then is fulfilled. 30He must increase, but I must decrease. 31He who comes from above is above all. He who has his origin in the earth is of the earth, and speaks as of the earth. He who comes out of heaven is above all, 32and what he has seen and has heard, this he testifies; and no one receives his testimony. 33He that has received his testimony has set to his seal that God is true; 34for he whom God has sent speaks the words of God, for God gives not the Spirit by measure. 35The Father loves the Son, and has given all things to be in his hand. 36He that believes on the Son has life eternal, and he that is not subject to the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abides upon him.
