False Teachers
1The Spirit says clearly that some people will abandon the faith in later times; they will obey lying spirits and follow the teachings of demons. 2Such teachings are spread by deceitful liars, whose consciences are dead, as if burnt with a hot iron. 3Such people teach that it is wrong to marry and to eat certain foods. But God created those foods to be eaten, after a prayer of thanks, by those who are believers and have come to know the truth. 4Everything that God has created is good; nothing is to be rejected, but everything is to be received with a prayer of thanks, 5because the word of God and the prayer make it acceptable to God.
A Good Servant of Christ Jesus
6If you give these instructions to the believers, you will be a good servant of Christ Jesus, as you feed yourself spiritually on the words of faith and of the true teaching which you have followed. 7But keep away from those godless legends, which are not worth telling. Keep yourself in training for a godly life. 8Physical exercise has some value, but spiritual exercise is valuable in every way, because it promises life both for the present and for the future. 9This is a true saying, to be completely accepted and believed. 10We struggle#4.10 struggle; some manuscripts have are reviled. and work hard, because we have placed our hope in the living God, who is the Saviour of all and especially of those who believe.
11Give them these instructions and these teachings. 12Do not let anyone look down on you because you are young, but be an example for the believers in your speech, your conduct, your love, faith, and purity. 13Until I come, give your time and effort to the public reading of the Scriptures and to preaching and teaching. 14Do not neglect the spiritual gift that is in you, which was given to you when the prophets spoke and the elders laid their hands on you. 15Practise these things and devote yourself to them, in order that your progress may be seen by all. 16Watch yourself and watch your teaching. Keep on doing these things, because if you do, you will save both yourself and those who hear you.

Warning against False Teachers
1The Holy Spirit has explicitly revealed: # 4:1 The Greek text could be translated “the Spirit says publicly.” This is most likely through prophetic utterance in the church. God’s Spirit still speaks to his people today through gifts of prophecy, tongues and interpretation of tongues, and in many other forms. Paul is likely quoting a prophecy. At the end of this age, many will depart from the true faith one after another, devoting themselves to spirits # 4:1 Aramaic and Hebrew speakers would view this as an idiom for “deceiving prophecies.” of deception and following demon-inspired revelations and theories. 2Hypocritical liars # 4:2 The Aramaic can be translated “they will seduce with false appearances.” will deceive many, and their consciences won’t bother them at all! 3They will require celibacy and dietary restrictions that God doesn’t expect, for he created all foods to be received with the celebration of faith by those who fully know the truth. 4We know that all creation is beautiful to God and there is nothing to be refused if it is received with gratitude. 5All that we eat is made sacred by the Word of God and prayer.
6If you will teach the believers these things, you will be known as a faithful and good minister of Jesus, the Anointed One. Nurture others in the living words of faith and in the knowledge of grace which you were taught.
7Be quick to abstain from senseless traditions # 4:7 Or “fables.” and legends, # 4:7 Or “the fiction of old wives’ tales.” but instead be engaged in the training of truth that brings righteousness.
Conduct of God’s Servants
8For athletic training only benefits you for a short season, but righteousness brings lasting benefit in everything; for righteousness contains the promise of life, for time and eternity. 9Faithful is the Word, and everyone should accept him! # 4:9 As translated from the Aramaic. The Greek text reads “this is a faithful saying and is worthy to be fully accepted.”
10For the sake of this ministry, we toil tirelessly and are criticized continually, # 4:10 As translated from the Aramaic. In place of “criticized continually” the Greek text has “contend for the [athletic] prize.” simply because our hope is in the living God. He is the wonderful life-giver # 4:10 As translated from the Aramaic. The Greek word is “Savior.” of all the children of men, and even more so to those who believe.
11Instruct and teach the people all that I’ve taught you. 12And don’t be intimidated by those who are older than you; simply be the example they need to see by being faithful and true in all that you do. Speak the truth # 4:12 As translated from the Greek. and live a life of purity and authentic love as you remain strong in your faith.
13So until I come, be diligent in devouring the Word of God, be faithful in prayer, and in teaching the believers.
14Don’t minimize the powerful gift that operates in your life, for it was imparted to you by the laying on of hands of the elders and was activated through the prophecy they spoke over you. 15Make all of this your constant meditation and make it real with your life so everyone can see that you are moving forward. 16Give careful attention to your spiritual life and every cherished truth you teach, for living what you preach will release salvation inside you and to all those who listen to you.
