Revelation 12

A dragon and two beasts
The woman and the dragon
1Something important appeared in the sky. It was a woman whose clothes were the sun. The moon was under her feet, and a crown made of twelve stars was on her head. 2She was about to give birth, and she was crying because of the great pain.
3Something else appeared in the sky. It was a huge red dragon with seven heads and ten horns, and a crown on each of its seven heads.#Dn 7.7. 4With its tail, it dragged a third of the stars from the sky and threw them down to the earth. Then the dragon turned towards the woman, because it wanted to eat her child as soon as it was born.#Dn 8.10.
5The woman gave birth to a son, who would rule all nations with an iron rod. The boy was snatched away. He was taken to God and placed on his throne.#Is 66.7; Ps 2.9. 6The woman ran into the desert to a place that God had prepared for her. There she would be taken care of for one thousand two hundred and sixty days.
Michael fights the dragon
7A war broke out in heaven. Michael and his angels were fighting against the dragon and its angels.#Dn 10.13,21; 12.1; Jd 9. 8But the dragon lost the battle. It and its angels were forced out of their places in heaven 9and were thrown down to the earth. Yes, that old snake and his angels were thrown out of heaven! That snake, who fools everyone on earth, is known as the devil and Satan.#Gn 3.1; Lk 10.18. 10Then I heard a voice from heaven shout,#Job 1.9-11; Zec 3.1.
“Our God has shown
his saving power,
and his kingdom has come!
God's own Chosen One
has shown his authority.
Satan accused our people
in the presence of God
day and night.
Now he has been thrown out!
11Our people defeated Satan
because of the blood#12.11 blood: Or “death”.
of the Lamb
and the message of God.
They were willing
to give up their lives.
12The heavens should rejoice,
together with everyone
who lives there.
But pity the earth
and the sea,
because the devil
was thrown down
to the earth.
He knows his time is short,
and he is very angry.”
13When the dragon realized that it had been thrown down to the earth, it tried to make trouble for the woman who had given birth to a son. 14But the woman was given two wings like those of a huge eagle, so that she could fly into the desert. There she would escape from the snake and be taken care of for a time, two times, and half a time.#Dn 7.25; 12.7.
15The snake then spewed out water like a river to sweep the woman away. 16But the earth helped her and swallowed the water that had come from the dragon's mouth. 17This made the dragon terribly angry with the woman. So it started a war against the rest of her children. They are the people who obey God and are faithful to what Jesus did and taught. 18The dragon#12.18 The dragon: The text has “he”, and some manuscripts have “I”. stood on the beach beside the sea.

Revelation 12
12
1Then an amazing sign appeared in heaven: a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet, and a crown of twelve stars on her head. 2She was pregnant, and she cried out because of her labor pains, groaning as she was giving birth. 3Another sign appeared in heaven: a great red dragon with seven heads and ten horns, with seven small crowns#12:3. Or “diadems” (also 13:1). The Greek word used here is different from that used in 12:1. on his heads. 4His tail swept away a third of the stars of heaven and threw them down to the earth. The dragon stood right in front of the woman who was giving birth, so that he could eat her child as soon as it was born.
5She gave birth to a son, a male child, who will rule all nations with an iron rod.#12:5. See Psalms 2:9. Her son was snatched up to God and his throne. 6The woman ran away into the desert, where God had prepared a place for her, so that she could be looked after for 1,260 days.
7There was war in heaven. Michael and his angels fought with the dragon. The dragon and his angels fought 8but he was not strong enough, and they could no longer remain in heaven. 9The great dragon, the ancient serpent called the devil and Satan who deceives the whole world, was thrown down to the earth, and his angels with him.
10Then I heard a loud voice in heaven saying, “Now salvation has come, and power, and the kingdom of our God, and the authority of his Christ. The Accuser of the believers#12:10. Literally, “brothers.” has been thrown down—the one who accuses them in God's presence day and night. 11They conquered him through the blood of the Lamb and through their personal testimony—they did not love their lives so much that they were willing to die if necessary.
12So celebrate, heaven, and everyone who lives there! Mourn, earth and sea, for the devil has come down to you and is very angry, knowing his time is short.”
13When the dragon realized he had been thrown down to the earth, he persecuted the woman that had given birth to the male child. 14The woman was given the wings of a large eagle so she could fly away to a deserted place where she could be looked after for a time, times, and half a time, protected from the serpent.
15The serpent spewed water like a river out of his mouth, trying to sweep her away in the flood. 16The earth came to the woman's aid by opening its mouth and swallowing up the river that the dragon spewed out of his mouth. 17The dragon was furious with the woman, and went off to attack the rest of her offspring, those who keep God's commandments and have the testimony of Jesus. 18#12:18. Some versions place the first line of verse 1 of the following chapter here as the last verse of chapter 12.
