Nahum 1
1
The fierce anger of the Lord
1I am Nahum from Elkosh.#1.1 Elkosh: The location of Elkosh is not known. And this is the message#1.1 message: Or “vision”. that I wrote down about Nineveh.#1.1 Nineveh: The capital of Assyria, the hated enemy of Israel.#Is 10.5-34; 14.24-27; Zep 2.13-15.
The fierce anger of the LORD
2The LORD God demands loyalty.
In his anger, he takes revenge
on his enemies.
3The LORD is powerful,
yet patient;
he makes sure that the guilty
are always punished.
He can be seen in storms
and in whirlwinds;
clouds are the dust from his feet.
4At the LORD's command,
oceans and rivers dry up.
Bashan, Mount Carmel,
and Lebanon#1.4 Bashan, Mount Carmel, and Lebanon: Three regions noted for their trees and flowers. wither,
and their flowers fade.
5At the sight of the LORD,
mountains and hills
tremble and melt;
the earth and its people
shudder and shake.
6Who can stand the heat
of his furious anger?
It flashes out like fire
and shatters stones.
Assyria's doom brings hope for the Lord's people
The power of Assyria will be broken
7The LORD is good.
He protects those who trust him
in times of trouble.
8But like a roaring flood,
the LORD chases his enemies
into dark places
and destroys them.
9So don't plot against the LORD!
He wipes out his enemies,
and they never revive.
10They are like drunkards
overcome by wine,
or like dry thorn bushes
burning in a fire.#1.10 fire: One possible meaning for the difficult Hebrew text of verse 10.
11Assyria, one of your rulers
has made evil plans
against the LORD.
12But the LORD says, “Assyria,
no matter how strong you are,
you are doomed!
My people Judah,
I have troubled you before,
but I won't do it again.
13I'll snap your chains
and set you free
from the Assyrians.”
14Assyria, this is what else
the LORD says to you:
“Your name will be forgotten.
I will destroy every idol
in your temple,
and I will send you to the grave,
because you are worthless.”
15Look towards the mountains,#Is 52.7.
people of Judah!
Here comes a messenger
with good news of peace.
Celebrate your festivals.
Keep your promises to God.
Your evil enemies are destroyed
and will never again
invade your country.

Is 10.5–34; 14.24–27; Zeph 2.13–15 This is a message about Nineveh, the account of a vision seen by Nahum, who was from Elkosh.
The LORD's Anger against Nineveh
2The LORD God tolerates no rivals;
he punishes those who oppose him.
In his anger he pays them back.
3The LORD does not easily become angry,
but he is powerful
and never lets the guilty go unpunished.
Where the LORD walks, storms arise;
the clouds are the dust raised by his feet!
4He commands the sea, and it dries up!
He makes the rivers go dry.
The fields of Bashan wither,
Mount Carmel turns brown,
and the flowers of Lebanon fade.
5Mountains quake in the presence of the LORD;
hills melt before him.
The earth shakes when the LORD appears;
the world and all its people tremble.
6When he is angry, who can survive?
Who can survive his terrible fury?
He pours out his flaming anger;
rocks crumble to dust before him.
7The LORD is good;
he protects his people in times of trouble;
he takes care of those who turn to him.
8Like a great rushing flood he completely destroys his enemies;#1.8 Some ancient translations his enemies; Hebrew its place.
he sends to their death those who oppose him.
9What are you plotting against the LORD?
He will destroy you.
No one opposes him more than once.
10Like tangled thorns and dry straw,
you drunkards will be burnt up!
11From you, Nineveh, there came someone full of wicked schemes, who plotted against the LORD. 12This is what the LORD says to his people Israel: “Even though the Assyrians are strong and numerous, they will be destroyed and disappear. My people, I made you suffer, but I will not do it again. 13I will now end Assyria's power over you and break the chains that bind you.”
14This is what the LORD has decreed about the Assyrians: “They will have no descendants to carry on their name. I will destroy the idols that are in the temples of their gods. I am preparing a grave for the Assyrians — they don't deserve to live!”
