Women who helped Jesus
1Soon after this, Jesus was going through towns and villages, telling the good news about God's kingdom. His twelve apostles were with him, 2and so were some women who had been healed of evil spirits and all sorts of diseases. One of the women was Mary Magdalene,#8.2 Magdalene: Meaning “from Magdala”, a small town on the western shore of Lake Galilee. There is no hint that she is the sinful woman in 7.36-50. who once had seven demons in her.#Mt 27.55,56; Mk 15.40,41; Lk 23.49. 3Joanna, Susanna, and many others had also used what they owned to help Jesus#8.3 used what they owned to help Jesus: Women often helped Jewish teachers by giving them money. and his disciples. Joanna's husband Chuza was one of Herod's officials.#8.3 Herod's officials: Herod Antipas, the son of Herod the Great.
A story about a farmer
(Matthew 13.1-9; Mark 4.1-9)
4When a large crowd from several towns had gathered around Jesus, he told them this story:
5A farmer went out to scatter seed in a field. While the farmer was doing it, some of the seeds fell along the road and were stepped on or eaten by birds. 6Other seeds fell on rocky ground and started growing. But the plants did not have enough water and soon dried up. 7Some other seeds fell where thorn bushes grew up and choked the plants. 8The rest of the seeds fell on good ground where they grew and produced a hundred times as many seeds.
When Jesus had finished speaking, he said, “If you have ears, pay attention!”
Why Jesus used stories
(Matthew 13.10-17; Mark 4.10-12)
9Jesus' disciples asked him what the story meant. 10So he answered:#Is 6.9 (LXX).
I have explained the secrets about God's kingdom to you, but for others I can only use stories. These people look, but they don't see, and they hear, but they don't understand.
Jesus explains the story about a farmer
(Matthew 13.18-23; Mark 4.13-20)
11This is what the story means: The seed is God's message, 12and the seeds that fell along the road are the people who hear the message. But the devil comes and snatches the message out of their hearts, so that they will not believe and be saved. 13The seeds that fell on rocky ground are the people who gladly hear the message and accept it. But they don't have deep roots, and they believe only for a little while. As soon as life gets hard, they give up.
14The seeds that fell among the thorn bushes are also people who hear the message. But they are so eager for riches and pleasures that they never produce anything. 15Those seeds that fell on good ground are the people who listen to the message and keep it in good and honest hearts. They last and produce a harvest.
Light
(Mark 4.21-25)
Jesus continued:
16No one lights a lamp and puts it under a bowl or under a bed. A lamp is always put on a lampstand, so that people who come into a house will see the light.#Mt 5.15; Lk 11.33. 17There is nothing hidden that will not be found. There is no secret that will not be well known.#Mt 10.26; Lk 12.2. 18Pay attention to how you listen! Everyone who has something will be given more, but people who have nothing will lose what little they think they have.#Mt 25.29; Lk 19.26.
Jesus' mother and brothers
(Matthew 12.46-50; Mark 3.31-35)
19Jesus' mother and brothers went to see him, but because of the crowd they could not get near him. 20Someone told Jesus, “Your mother and brothers are standing outside and want to see you.”
21Jesus answered, “My mother and my brothers are those people who hear and obey God's message.”
A storm
(Matthew 8.23-27; Mark 4.35-41)
22One day, Jesus and his disciples got into a boat, and he said, “Let's cross the lake.”#8.22 cross the lake: To the eastern shore of Lake Galilee, where most of the people were not Jewish. They started out, 23and while they were sailing across, he went to sleep.
Suddenly a storm struck the lake, and the boat started sinking. They were in danger. 24So they went to Jesus and woke him up, “Master, Master! We are about to drown!”
Jesus got up and ordered the wind and waves to stop. They obeyed, and everything was calm. 25Then Jesus asked the disciples, “Don't you have any faith?”
But they were frightened and amazed. They said to each other, “Who is this? He can give orders to the wind and the waves, and they obey him!”
A man with demons in him
(Matthew 8.28-34; Mark 5.1-20)
26Jesus and his disciples sailed across Lake Galilee and came to shore near the town of Gerasa.#8.26 Gerasa: Some manuscripts have “Gergesa”. 27As Jesus was getting out of the boat, he was met by a man from that town. The man had demons in him. He had gone naked for a long time and no longer lived in a house, but in the graveyard.#8.27 graveyard: It was thought that demons and evil spirits lived in graveyards.
28The man saw Jesus and screamed. He knelt down in front of him and shouted, “Jesus, Son of God in heaven, what do you want with me? I beg you not to torture me!” 29He said this because Jesus had already told the evil spirit to go out of him.
The man had often been attacked by the demon. And even though he had been bound with chains and leg irons and kept under guard, he smashed whatever bound him. Then the demon would force him out into lonely places.
30Jesus asked the man, “What is your name?”
He answered, “My name is Lots.” He said this because there were ‘lots’ of demons in him. 31They begged Jesus not to send them to the deep pit,#8.31 deep pit: The place where evil spirits are kept and punished. where they would be punished.
32A large herd of pigs was feeding there on the hillside. So the demons begged Jesus to let them go into the pigs, and Jesus let them go. 33Then the demons left the man and went into the pigs. The whole herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and drowned.
34When the men taking care of the pigs saw this, they ran to spread the news in the town and on the farms. 35The people went out to see what had happened, and when they came to Jesus, they also found the man. The demons had gone out of him, and he was sitting there at the feet of Jesus. He had clothes on and was in his right mind. But the people were terrified.
36Then all who had seen the man healed told about it. 37Everyone from around Gerasa#8.37 Gerasa: See the note at 8.26. begged Jesus to leave, because they were so frightened.
When Jesus got into the boat to start back, 38the man who had been healed begged to go with him. But Jesus sent him off and said, 39“Go back home and tell everyone how much God has done for you.” The man then went all over town, telling everything that Jesus had done for him.
A dying girl and a sick woman
(Matthew 9.18-26; Mark 5.21-43)
40Everyone had been waiting for Jesus, and when he came back, a crowd was there to welcome him. 41Just then the man in charge of the Jewish meeting place came and knelt down in front of Jesus. His name was Jairus, and he begged Jesus to come to his home 42because his twelve-year-old child was dying. She was his only daughter.
While Jesus was on his way, people were crowding all around him. 43In the crowd was a woman who had been bleeding for twelve years. She had spent everything she had on doctors,#8.43 She had spent everything she had on doctors: Some manuscripts do not have these words. but none of them could make her well.
44As soon as she came up behind Jesus and barely touched his clothes, her bleeding stopped.
45“Who touched me?” Jesus asked.
While everyone was denying it, Peter said, “Master, people are crowding all around and pushing you from every side.”#8.45 from every side: Some manuscripts add “and you ask, ‘Who touched me?’ ”
46But Jesus answered, “Someone touched me, because I felt power going out from me.” 47The woman knew that she could not hide, so she came trembling and knelt down in front of Jesus. She told everyone why she had touched him and that she had been healed straight away.
48Jesus said to the woman, “You are now well because of your faith. May God give you peace!”
49While Jesus was speaking, someone came from Jairus' home and said, “Your daughter has died! Why bother the teacher any more?”
50When Jesus heard this, he told Jairus, “Don't worry! Have faith, and your daughter will get well.”
51Jesus went into the house, but he did not let anyone else go with him, except Peter, John, James, and the girl's father and mother. 52Everyone was crying and weeping for the girl. But Jesus said, “The child isn't dead. She is just asleep.” 53The people laughed at him because they knew she was dead.
54Jesus took hold of the girl's hand and said, “Child, get up!” 55She came back to life and got straight up. Jesus told them to give her something to eat. 56Her parents were surprised, but Jesus ordered them not to tell anyone what had happened.

The Parable of the Sower
4 # For ver. 4-10, see Matt. 13:1-15; Mark 4:1-12 And when a great crowd was gathering and people from town after town came to him, he said in a parable, 5#[Isa. 55:10; Amos 9:13]“A sower went out to sow his seed. And as he sowed, some fell along the path and was trampled underfoot, and the birds of the air devoured it. 6And some fell on the rock, and as it grew up, #John 15:6it withered away, because it had no moisture. 7And some fell among #Jer. 4:3thorns, and the thorns grew up with it and choked it. 8And some fell into good soil and grew and yielded #Gen. 26:12 a hundredfold.” As he said these things, he called out, #See Matt. 11:15“He who has ears to hear, let him hear.”
The Purpose of the Parables
9And when his disciples asked him what this parable meant, 10he said, #Matt. 19:11; Col. 1:27; [1 Cor. 2:6-10; 1 John 2:20, 27]; See Matt. 11:25 “To you it has been given to know #See Rom. 16:25 the secrets of the kingdom of God, but for others they are in parables, so #Isa. 6:9, 10; See Matt. 13:13that ‘seeing they may not see, and hearing they may not understand.’ 11#For ver. 11-15, see Matt. 13:18-23; Mark 4:13-20 Now the parable is this: The seed is #ch. 1:2; Mark 2:2; 4:33; Acts 8:4; James 1:21the word of God. 12The ones along the path are those who have heard; then the devil comes and takes away the word from their hearts, so that they may not #See Mark 16:16believe and be saved. 13And the ones on the rock are those who, when they hear the word, receive it #[Isa. 58:2; Ezek. 33:31, 32; Mark 6:20; John 5:35] with joy. But these have no root; they #Gal. 1:6; [Hos. 6:4; Gal. 5:7] believe for a while, and in time of testing #1 Tim. 4:1; Heb. 3:12fall away. 14And as for what fell among the thorns, they are those who hear, but #[James 1:11] as they go on their way they are choked by the #See Matt. 6:25cares and riches and pleasures of life, and their fruit does not mature. 15As for that in the good soil, they are those who, hearing the word, hold it fast in an honest and good heart, and #Hos. 14:8; John 15:5, 6; Phil. 1:11; Col. 1:6 bear fruit #James 5:7; See Heb. 10:36with patience.
A Lamp Under a Jar
16 # For ver. 16-18, see Mark 4:21-25 # ch. 11:33; Matt. 5:15 “No one after lighting a lamp covers it with a jar or puts it under a bed, but puts it on a stand, so that those who enter may see the light. 17#ch. 12:2; Matt. 10:26; [1 Tim. 5:25]For nothing is hidden that will not be made manifest, nor is anything secret that will not be known and come to light. 18#[ver. 11-15] Take care then how you hear, #See Matt. 13:12for to the one who has, more will be given, and from the one who has not, even what he thinks that he has will be taken away.”
Jesus’ Mother and Brothers
19 # For ver. 19-21, see Matt. 12:46-50; Mark 3:31-35 Then his mother and #Matt. 13:55; Mark 6:3; John 2:12; 7:3, 5, 10; Acts 1:14; 1 Cor. 9:5; Gal. 1:19his brothers#8:19 Or brothers and sisters. In New Testament usage, depending on the context, the plural Greek word adelphoi (translated “brothers”) may refer either to brothers or to brothers and sisters; also verses 20, 21 came to him, but they could not reach him because of the crowd. 20And he was told, “Your mother and your brothers are standing outside, desiring to see you.” 21But he answered them, “My mother and my brothers are those #ch. 11:28; See James 1:22who hear the word of God and do it.”
Jesus Calms a Storm
22 # For ver. 22-25, see Matt. 8:23-27; Mark 4:36-41; [John 6:16-21] One day he got into a boat with his disciples, and he said to them, “Let us go across to the other side of #ver. 33; See ch. 5:1the lake.” So they set out, 23and as they sailed he fell asleep. And a windstorm came down on #[See ver. 22 above]the lake, and they were filling with water and were in danger. 24And they went and woke him, saying, “Master, Master, we are perishing!” And he awoke and #ch. 4:39; Ps. 104:7 rebuked the wind and the raging waves, and they ceased, #Ps. 65:7; [Matt. 14:32; Mark 6:51]and there was a calm. 25He said to them, “Where is your faith?” And they #John 14:27 were afraid, and they #[Mark 1:27] marveled, saying to one another, “Who then is this, that #[ch. 5:9]he commands even winds and water, and they obey him?”
Jesus Heals a Man with a Demon
26 # For ver. 26-40, see Matt. 8:28–9:1; Mark 5:1-21 Then they sailed to the country of the Gerasenes,#8:26 Some manuscripts Gadarenes; others Gergesenes; also verse 37 which is opposite Galilee. 27When Jesus#8:27 Greek he; also verses 38, 42 had stepped out on land, there met him a man from the city who had demons. For a long time he had worn no clothes, and he had not lived in a house #[Rev. 18:2]but among the tombs. 28When he saw Jesus, he #ch. 4:33, 34; Mark 1:23, 24, 26; Acts 8:7 cried out and fell down before him and said #ch. 4:33, 34; Mark 1:23, 24, 26; Acts 8:7 with a loud voice, “What have you to do with me, Jesus, #[ch. 4:3, 9]; See Matt. 14:33 Son of #ch. 1:32; 6:35; Gen. 14:18; Num. 24:16; Ps. 57:2; Isa. 14:14; Dan. 3:26; Acts 16:17the Most High God? I beg you, do not torment me.” 29For he had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man. (For many a time it had seized him. He was kept under guard and bound with chains and shackles, but he would break the bonds and be driven by the demon #[ch. 11:24; Matt. 12:43]into the desert.) 30Jesus then asked him, “What is your name?” And he said, #Matt. 26:53“Legion,” for many demons had entered him. 31And they begged him not to command them to depart into #See Rev. 9:1the abyss. 32Now a large herd of pigs was feeding there on the hillside, and they begged him to let them enter these. So he gave them permission. 33Then the demons came out of the man and entered the pigs, and the herd rushed down the steep bank into #ver. 22, 23the lake and drowned.
34When the herdsmen saw what had happened, they fled and told it in the city and in the country. 35Then people went out to see what had happened, and they came to Jesus and found the man from whom the demons had gone, sitting #ch. 10:39 at the feet of Jesus, #[ver. 27]clothed and in his right mind, and they were afraid. 36And those who had seen it told them how the demon-possessed#8:36 Greek daimonizomai (demonized); elsewhere rendered oppressed by demons man had been healed. 37Then all the people of the surrounding country of the Gerasenes #[ch. 5:8; Acts 16:39]asked him to depart from them, for they were seized with great fear. So he got into the boat and returned. 38The man from whom the demons had gone begged that he might be with him, but Jesus sent him away, saying, 39“Return to your home, and #Ps. 66:16; [ch. 5:14]declare how much God has done for you.” And he went away, proclaiming throughout the whole city how much Jesus had done for him.
Jesus Heals a Woman and Jairus’s Daughter
40Now when Jesus returned, the crowd #ch. 9:11welcomed him, for they were all waiting for him. 41#For ver. 41-56, see Matt. 9:18-26; Mark 5:22-43 And there came a man named Jairus, who was #ch. 13:14; Acts 13:15; 18:8, 17a ruler of the synagogue. And falling at Jesus’ feet, he implored him to come to his house, 42for he had #See ch. 7:12 an only daughter, about twelve years of age, and she was dying.
As Jesus went, the people #ver. 45; Mark 3:9pressed around him. 43And there was a woman #Lev. 15:25 who had had a discharge of blood for twelve years, and though she had spent all her #ch. 21:4; Mark 12:44living on physicians,#8:43 Some manuscripts omit and though she had spent all her living on physicians she could not be healed by anyone. 44She came up behind him and touched #Matt. 14:36; 23:5; [Num. 15:38, 39; Deut. 22:12] the fringe of his garment, and #Matt. 15:28; 17:18immediately her discharge of blood ceased. 45And Jesus said, “Who was it that touched me?” When all denied it, Peter#8:45 Some manuscripts add and those who were with him said, “Master, the crowds surround you and are pressing in on you!” 46But Jesus said, “Someone touched me, for I perceive that #ch. 5:17; 6:19; [Acts 10:38]power has gone out from me.” 47And when the woman saw that she was not hidden, she came trembling, and falling down before him declared in the presence of all the people why she had touched him, and how she had been immediately healed. 48And he said to her, “Daughter, #See ch. 7:50your faith has made you well; #See ch. 7:50go in peace.”
49While he was still speaking, someone from #ver. 41 the ruler’s house came and said, “Your daughter is dead; #ch. 7:6 do not trouble #See John 11:28the Teacher any more.” 50But Jesus on hearing this answered him, “Do not fear; only believe, and she will be well.” 51And when he came to the house, he allowed no one to enter with him, except #ch. 9:28; Mark 14:33 Peter and #Mark 3:17John and James, and the father and mother of the child. 52And all were weeping and #ch. 23:27; Matt. 11:17 mourning for her, but he #ch. 7:13 said, “Do not weep, for #[Acts 20:10] she is not dead but #John 11:4, 11sleeping.” 53And they laughed at him, knowing that she was dead. 54But #See Mark 1:31 taking her by the hand he called, saying, “Child, #ch. 7:14, 22; [Matt. 11:5; John 11:43]arise.” 55And #[Judg. 15:19; 1 Sam. 30:12]her spirit returned, and she got up at once. And he directed that something should be given her to eat. 56And her parents were amazed, but #See Matt. 8:4he charged them to tell no one what had happened.
