Jesus is alive
Jesus is alive
(Matthew 28.1-10; Mark 16.1-8; John 20.1-10)
1Very early on Sunday morning the women went to the tomb, carrying the spices that they had prepared. 2When they found the stone rolled away from the entrance, 3they went in. But they did not find the body of the Lord#24.3 the Lord: These words are not in some manuscripts. Jesus, 4and they did not know what to think.
Suddenly two men in shining white clothes stood beside them. 5The women were afraid and bowed to the ground. But the men said, “Why are you looking in the place of the dead for someone who is alive? 6Jesus isn't here! He has been raised from death. Remember that while he was still in Galilee, he told you,#Mt 16.21; 17.22,23; 20.18,19; Mk 8.31; 9.31; 10.33,34; Lk 9.22; 18.31-33. 7‘The Son of Man will be handed over to sinners who will nail him to a cross. But three days later he will rise to life.’ ” 8Then they remembered what Jesus had said.
9-10Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and some other women were the ones who had gone to the tomb. When they returned, they told the eleven apostles and the others what had happened. 11The apostles thought it was all nonsense, and they would not believe.
12But Peter ran to the tomb. And when he stooped down and looked in, he saw only the burial clothes. Then he returned, wondering what had happened.#24.12 what had happened: Verse 12 is not in some manuscripts.
Jesus appears. He is taken to heaven
Jesus appears to two disciples
(Mark 16.12,13)
13That same day two of Jesus' disciples were going to the village of Emmaus, which was about eleven kilometres from Jerusalem. 14As they were talking and thinking about what had happened, 15Jesus came near and started walking along beside them. 16But they did not know who he was.
17Jesus asked them, “What were you talking about as you walked along?”
The two of them stood there looking sad and gloomy. 18Then the one named Cleopas asked Jesus, “Are you the only person from Jerusalem who didn't know what was happening there these last few days?”
19“What do you mean?” Jesus asked.
They answered:
Those things that happened to Jesus from Nazareth. By what he did and said he showed that he was a powerful prophet, who pleased God and all the people. 20Then the chief priests and our leaders had him arrested and sentenced to die on a cross. 21We had hoped that he would be the one to set Israel free! But it has already been three days since all this happened.
22Some women in our group surprised us. They had gone to the tomb early in the morning, 23but did not find the body of Jesus. They came back, saying that they had seen a vision of angels who told them that he is alive. 24Some men from our group went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said. But they didn't see Jesus either.
25Then Jesus asked the two disciples, “Why can't you understand? How can you be so slow to believe all that the prophets said? 26Didn't you know that the Messiah would have to suffer before he was given his glory?” 27Jesus then explained everything written about himself in the Scriptures, beginning with the Law of Moses and the Books of the Prophets.#24.27 the Law of Moses and the Books of the Prophets: See the note at 16.16.
28When the two of them came near the village where they were going, Jesus seemed to be going further. 29They begged him, “Stay with us! It's already late, and the sun is going down.” So Jesus went into the house to stay with them.
30After Jesus sat down to eat, he took some bread. He blessed it and broke it. Then he gave it to them. 31At once they knew who he was, but he disappeared. 32They said to each other, “When he talked with us along the road and explained the Scriptures to us, didn't it warm our hearts?” 33So they got up at once and returned to Jerusalem.
The two disciples found the eleven apostles and the others gathered together. 34And they learnt from the group that the Lord was really alive and had appeared to Peter. 35Then the disciples from Emmaus told what happened on the road and how they knew he was the Lord when he broke the bread.
What Jesus' followers must do
(Matthew 28.16-20; Mark 16.14-18; John 20.19-23; Acts 1.6-8)
36While Jesus' disciples were talking about what had happened, Jesus appeared and greeted them. 37They were frightened and terrified because they thought they were seeing a ghost.
38But Jesus said, “Why are you so frightened? Why do you doubt? 39Look at my hands and my feet and see who I am! Touch me and find out for yourselves. Ghosts don't have flesh and bones as you see I have.”
40After Jesus said this, he showed them his hands and his feet. 41The disciples were so glad and amazed that they could not believe it. Jesus then asked them, “Do you have something to eat?” 42They gave him a piece of baked fish. 43He took it and ate it as they watched.
44Jesus said to them, “While I was still with you, I told you that everything written about me in the Law of Moses, the Books of the Prophets, and in the Psalms#24.44 Psalms: The Jewish Scriptures were made up of three parts: (1) the Law of Moses, (2) the Books of the Prophets, (3) and the Writings, which included the Psalms. Sometimes the Scriptures were just called the Law or the Law (of Moses) and the Books of the Prophets. had to happen.”
45Then he helped them understand the Scriptures. 46He told them:
The Scriptures say that the Messiah must suffer, then three days later he will rise from death. 47They also say that all people of every nation must be told in my name to turn to God, in order to be forgiven. So beginning in Jerusalem, 48you must tell everything that has happened. 49I will send you the one my Father has promised,#24.49 the one my Father has promised: Jesus means the Holy Spirit. but you must stay in the city until you are given power from heaven.#Ac 1.4.
Jesus returns to heaven
(Mark 16.19,20; Acts 1.9-11)
50Jesus led his disciples out to Bethany, where he raised his hands and blessed them.#Ac 1.9-11. 51As he was doing this, he left and was taken up to heaven.#24.51 and was taken up to heaven: These words are not in some manuscripts. 52After his disciples had worshipped him,#24.52 After his disciples had worshipped him: These words are not in some manuscripts. they returned to Jerusalem and were very happy. 53They spent their time in the temple, praising God.

Luke 24
24
1Very early on the first day of the week,#24:1. That is, Sunday. the women went to the tomb, taking the spices they'd prepared. 2They found that the stone had been rolled away from the entrance to the tomb, 3but when they went in they didn't find the body of the Lord Jesus. 4While they were wondering what was going on, two men suddenly appeared dressed in clothes that shone brilliantly. 5The women were terrified and bowed down, their faces on the ground.
They said to the women, “Why are you looking for someone who is alive among the dead? 6He's not here; he's risen from the dead! Remember what he told you while you were still in Galilee: 7‘The Son of man must be betrayed into the hands of evil men, be crucified, and on the third day rise again.’” 8Then they remembered what he'd said.
9When they returned from the tomb they reported all that had happened to the eleven disciples and to all the others. 10Those who told the apostles what had happened were Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and other women with them. 11But it seemed like nonsense to them, so they didn't believe the women.
12However, Peter got up and ran to the tomb. Bending down, he looked in and saw only the linen grave-clothes. So he went back home, wondering what had happened.
13The same day two disciples were on their way to a village called Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem. 14They were talking about all that had happened. 15As they discussed and debated, Jesus came up and fell into step with them. 16But they were kept from recognizing him.
17“What are you discussing as you walk along?” he asked them. They stopped, their faces sad. 18One of them, called Cleopas, replied, “Are you just visiting Jerusalem? You must be the only person who doesn't know the things that have happened in the past few days.”
19“What things?” Jesus asked. “About Jesus of Nazareth,” they replied. “He was a prophet who spoke powerfully and performed great miracles before God and all the people. 20But our high priests and leaders handed him over to be condemned to death, and they crucified him. 21We had hoped he was the one who was going to rescue Israel. It's been three days now since all this happened.
22But then some of the women in our group surprised us. 23At dawn they went to the tomb and they didn't find his body. They came back saying that they'd seen a vision of angels who told them he's alive. 24Some of us went to the tomb, and found it just as the women said—but they didn't see him.”
25Jesus told them, “You're so dull! How slow you are to trust in all that the prophets said! 26Didn't the Messiah have to suffer before he could enter into his glory?” 27Then, starting with Moses and all the prophets, he explained to them everything that was said in Scripture about himself.
28As they approached the village they were going to, Jesus made it seem as if he was going farther. 29But they urged him, saying, “Please come and stay with us. It's getting late—the day is almost over.” So he went to stay with them.
30When he sat down to eat with them, he took the bread and gave thanks, broke it, and gave it to them. 31Their eyes were opened, and they recognized him. Then he disappeared from view.
32The two disciples said to each other, “Weren't our thoughts on fire when he spoke to us, as he explained the Scriptures to us?” 33They got up right away and returned to Jerusalem. There they found the eleven disciples and those who were with them meeting together, 34who said, “The Lord has really risen again! He has appeared to Simon.”
35Then those who had just arrived explained to the other disciples what had happened to them on the road, and how they had recognized Jesus when he broke bread. 36While they were talking, Jesus himself stood among them, and said, “Peace to you!” 37They were startled and afraid, thinking they were seeing a ghost.
38“Why are you frightened? Why are you doubting?” he asked them. 39“Look at my hands and my feet—you can see it's me. Touch me and you'll be certain, for a ghost doesn't have flesh and bones, as you see I have.”
40Having said this, he showed them his hands and feet. 41But they still couldn't believe it because they were so elated and amazed. He asked them, “Do you have anything to eat?” 42They gave him a piece of cooked fish, 43and he took it and ate it in front of them.
44Then Jesus said to them, “This is what I explained to you while I was still with you. Everything written about me in the law of Moses, the prophets, and the psalms, had to be fulfilled.” 45Then he opened their minds so they were able to understand the Scriptures. 46He told them, “It was written like this: the Messiah would suffer and rise from the dead on the third day, and in his name 47repentance for the forgiveness of sins would be preached to all nations, beginning in Jerusalem. 48You are witnesses of all this. 49Now I'm going to send you what my Father promised—but wait in the city until you receive power from heaven.”
50Then he led them out until they were near Bethany, and lifting up his hands, he blessed them. 51While he was blessing them, he left them, and was taken up to heaven. 52They worshiped him, and then they returned to Jerusalem full of joy. 53They spent all their time in the Temple praising God.
