Turn back to God
1About this same time Jesus was told that Pilate had given orders for some people from Galilee to be killed while they were offering sacrifices. 2Jesus replied:
Do you think that these people were worse sinners than everyone else in Galilee just because of what happened to them? 3Not at all! But you can be sure that if you don't turn back to God, every one of you will also be killed. 4What about those eighteen people who died when the tower in Siloam fell on them? Do you think they were worse than everyone else in Jerusalem? 5Not at all! But you can be sure that if you don't turn back to God, every one of you will also die.
A story about a fig tree
6Jesus then told them this story:
A man had a fig tree growing in his vineyard. One day he went out to pick some figs, but he didn't find any. 7So he said to the gardener, “For three years I have come looking for figs on this tree, and I haven't found any yet. Chop it down! Why should it take up space?”
8The gardener answered, “Master, leave it for another year. I'll dig around it and put some manure on it to make it grow. 9Perhaps it will have figs on it next year. If it doesn't, you can have it cut down.”
Healing a woman on the Sabbath
10One Sabbath, Jesus was teaching in a Jewish meeting place, 11and a woman was there who had been crippled by an evil spirit for eighteen years. She was completely bent over and could not straighten up. 12When Jesus saw the woman, he called her over and said, “You are now well.” 13He placed his hands on her, and at once she stood up straight and praised God.
14The man in charge of the meeting place was angry because Jesus had healed someone on the Sabbath. So he said to the people, “Each week has six days when we can work. Come and be healed on one of those days, but not on the Sabbath.”#Ex 20.9,10; Dt 5.13,14.
15The Lord replied, “Are you trying to fool someone? Won't any one of you untie your ox or donkey and lead it out to drink on a Sabbath? 16This woman belongs to the family of Abraham, but Satan has kept her bound for eighteen years. Isn't it right to set her free on the Sabbath?” 17Jesus' words made his enemies ashamed. But everyone else in the crowd was happy about the wonderful things he was doing.
A mustard seed and yeast
(Matthew 13.31-33; Mark 4.30-32)
18Jesus said, “What is God's kingdom like? What can I compare it with? 19It is like what happens when someone plants a mustard seed in a garden. The seed grows as big as a tree, and birds nest in its branches.”
20Then Jesus said, “What can I compare God's kingdom with? 21It is like what happens when a woman mixes yeast into three batches of flour. Finally, all the dough rises.”
The narrow door
(Matthew 7.13,14,21-23)
22As Jesus was on his way to Jerusalem, he taught the people in the towns and villages. 23Someone asked him, “Lord, are only a few people going to be saved?”
Jesus answered:
24Do all you can to go in by the narrow door! A lot of people will try to get in, but will not be able to. 25Once the owner of the house gets up and locks the door, you will be left standing outside. You will knock on the door and say, “Sir, open the door for us!”
But the owner will answer, “I don't know a thing about you!”
26Then you will start saying, “We dined with you, and you taught in our streets.”
27But he will say, “I really don't know who you are! Get away from me, you evil people!”#Ps 6.8.
28Then when you have been thrown outside, you will weep and grit your teeth because you will see Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and all the prophets in God's kingdom.#Mt 22.13; 25.30.#Mt 8.11,12. 29People will come from all directions and sit down to feast in God's kingdom. 30There the ones who are now least important will be the most important, and those who are now most important will be least important.#Mt 19.30; 20.16; Mk 10.31.
Jesus and Herod
31At that time some Pharisees came to Jesus and said, “You had better get away from here! Herod#13.31 Herod: Herod Antipas, the son of Herod the Great. wants to kill you.”
32Jesus said to them:
Go and tell that fox, “I am going to force out demons and heal people today and tomorrow, and three days later I'll have finished.” 33But I am going on my way today and tomorrow and the next day. After all, Jerusalem is the place where prophets are killed.
Jesus loves Jerusalem
(Matthew 23.37-39)
Jesus continued:
34Jerusalem, Jerusalem! Your people have killed the prophets and have stoned the messengers who were sent to you. I have often wanted to gather your people, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings. But you wouldn't let me. 35Now your temple will be deserted. You won't see me again until the time when you say,#Ps 118.26.
“Blessed is the one who comes
in the name of the Lord.”

Repent or Perish
1There were some present at that very time who told him about the Galileans whose blood #ch. 3:1Pilate had mingled with their sacrifices. 2And he answered them, #[Job 4:7; John 9:2; Acts 28:4]“Do you think that these Galileans were worse sinners than all the other Galileans, because they suffered in this way? 3No, I tell you; but unless you #See ch. 5:32repent, you will all likewise perish. 4Or those eighteen on whom the tower in #John 9:7, 11Siloam fell and killed them: do you think that they were worse offenders than all the others who lived in Jerusalem? 5No, I tell you; but unless you #[See ver. 3 above]repent, you will all likewise perish.”
The Parable of the Barren Fig Tree
6And he told this parable: “A man had #Matt. 21:19; Mark 11:13; [Isa. 5:2]a fig tree planted in his vineyard, and he came seeking fruit on it and found none. 7And he said to the vinedresser, ‘Look, for three years now I have come seeking fruit on this fig tree, and I find none. #ch. 3:9; Matt. 7:19Cut it down. Why should it use up the ground?’ 8And he answered him, ‘Sir, let it alone this year also, until I dig around it and put on manure. 9Then if it should bear fruit next year, well and good; but if not, you can cut it down.’”
A Woman with a Disabling Spirit
10Now #See Matt. 4:23; Mark 6:2he was teaching in one of the synagogues on the Sabbath. 11And behold, there was a woman who had had #Acts 16:16; [ver. 16]a disabling spirit for eighteen years. She was bent over and could not fully straighten herself. 12When Jesus saw her, he called her over and said to her, “Woman, you are freed from your disability.” 13And he #See Mark 5:23 laid his hands on her, and immediately she was made straight, and she #ch. 5:25; 18:43; See ch. 7:16glorified God. 14But #See ch. 8:41 the ruler of the synagogue, indignant because Jesus #See Matt. 12:2 had healed on the Sabbath, said to the people, #Ex. 20:9; Ezek. 46:1“There are six days in which work ought to be done. Come on those days and be healed, and not on the Sabbath day.” 15Then the Lord answered him, “You hypocrites! #ch. 14:5; [Matt. 12:11]Does not each of you on the Sabbath untie his ox or his donkey from the manger and lead it away to water it? 16And ought not this woman, #ch. 19:9 a daughter of Abraham whom #[ver. 11; Acts 10:38; 1 Cor. 5:5; 2 Cor. 12:7]; See 1 Chr. 21:1Satan bound for eighteen years, be loosed from this bond on the Sabbath day?” 17As he said these things, #Ps. 132:18; 1 Pet. 3:16 all his adversaries were put to shame, and #ch. 18:43all the people rejoiced at all the glorious things that were done by him.
The Mustard Seed and the Leaven
18 # For ver. 18, 19, see Matt. 13:31, 32; Mark 4:30-32 He said therefore, “What is the kingdom of God like? And to what shall I compare it? 19It is like #ch. 17:6; Matt. 17:20a grain of mustard seed that a man took and sowed in his garden, and it grew and became a tree, and the birds of the air made nests in its branches.”
20And again he said, “To what shall I compare the kingdom of God? 21#Matt. 13:33 It is like leaven that a woman took and hid in #Gen. 18:6 three measures of flour, until it was #1 Cor. 5:6; Gal. 5:9all leavened.”
The Narrow Door
22 # See Mark 6:6 He went on his way through towns and villages, teaching and #[ver. 33]; See ch. 9:51journeying toward Jerusalem. 23And someone said to him, “Lord, #Acts 2:47; 1 Cor. 1:18; 2 Cor. 2:15will those who are saved be few?” And he said to them, 24#1 Tim. 4:10; Heb. 12:4; [1 Tim. 6:12 (Gk.)]; See 1 Cor. 9:25 “Strive #Matt. 7:13to enter through the narrow door. For many, I tell you, will seek to enter and will not be able. 25#For ver. 25-27, [Matt. 25:10-12] When once the master of the house has risen and shut the door, and you begin to stand outside and to knock at the door, saying, #Matt. 7:22, 23 ‘Lord, open to us,’ then he will answer you, #Matt. 10:33; 25:12; [2 Tim. 2:19]‘I do not know where you come from.’ 26Then you will begin to say, #[Ex. 24:11]‘We ate and drank in your presence, and you taught in our streets.’ 27But he will say, ‘I tell you, #[See ver. 25 above] I do not know where you come from. #See Ps. 6:8Depart from me, all you workers of evil!’ 28#See Matt. 8:11, 12In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth, when you see #See Matt. 8:11, 12Abraham and Isaac and Jacob and all the prophets in the kingdom of God but #See Matt. 8:11, 12you yourselves cast out. 29And #[See ver. 28 above] people will come from east and west, and from north and south, and #[ch. 14:15; 22:30]recline at table in the kingdom of God. 30And behold, #See Matt. 19:30some are last who will be first, and some are first who will be last.”
Lament over Jerusalem
31At that very hour some Pharisees came and said to him, “Get away from #[Matt. 19:1; Mark 10:1] here, for #See ch. 3:1Herod wants to kill you.” 32And he said to them, “Go and tell that fox, ‘Behold, I cast out demons and perform cures today and tomorrow, and the third day #[See Heb. 2:10; 5:9; 7:28]I finish my course. 33Nevertheless, #[John 11:9] I #Acts 3:21; 17:3 must go on my way today and tomorrow and the day following, for it cannot be that #See Matt. 21:11a prophet should perish away from Jerusalem.’ 34#For ver. 34, 35, see Matt. 23:37-39; [ch. 19:41-44] O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that #See Matt. 21:35 kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to it! #[Matt. 26:55] How often would I have #[Ps. 147:2; Prov. 1:24] gathered #ch. 23:28 your children together #[Deut. 32:11, 12] as a hen gathers her brood #Ruth 2:12 under her wings, and #John 5:40you were not willing! 35Behold, #[Isa. 64:11; Jer. 12:7; 22:5] your house is forsaken. And I tell you, you will not see me until you say, #ch. 19:38; Cited from Ps. 118:26‘Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!’”
