The king honours Mordecai
1That night the king could not sleep, and he got a servant to read him the records of what had happened since he had been king. 2When the servant read how Mordecai had kept Bigthana and Teresh from killing the king,#Es 2.21,22. 3the king asked, “What has been done to reward Mordecai for this?”
“Nothing, Your Majesty!” the king's servants replied.
4About this time, Haman came in to ask the king to have Mordecai hanged on the tower he had built. The king saw him and asked, “Who is that man waiting in front of the throne room?”
5The king's servants answered, “Your Majesty, it is Haman.”
“Tell him to come in,” the king commanded.
6When Haman entered the room, the king asked him, “What should I do for a man I want to honour?”
Haman was sure that he was the one the king wanted to honour. 7So he replied, “Your Majesty, if you wish to honour a man, 8get someone to bring him one of your own robes and one of your own horses with a fancy head-dress. 9Tell one of your highest officials to place your robe on this man and lead him through the streets on your horse, while someone shouts, ‘This is how the king honours a man!’ ”
10The king replied, “Hurry and do just what you have said! Don't forget a thing. Get the robe and the horse for Mordecai the Jew, who is on duty at the palace gate!”
11Haman got the king's robe and put it on Mordecai. He led him through the city on the horse and shouted as he went, “This is how the king honours a man!”
12Afterwards, Mordecai returned to his duties at the palace gate, and Haman hurried home, hiding his face in shame. 13Haman told his wife and friends what had happened. Then his wife and his advisers said, “If Mordecai is a Jew, this is just the beginning of your troubles! You will end up a ruined man.” 14They were still talking, when the king's servants came and quickly took Haman to the dinner that Esther had prepared.

The King Honors Mordecai
1That night the king could not sleep. So one was commanded to bring #Esth. 2:23, 10:2the book of the records of the chronicles; and they were read before the king. 2And it was found written that Mordecai had told of Bigthana and Teresh, two of the king’s eunuchs, the doorkeepers who had sought to lay hands on King Ahasuerus. 3Then the king said, “What honor or dignity has been bestowed on Mordecai for this?”
And the king’s servants who attended him said, “Nothing has been done for him.”
4So the king said, “Who is in the court?” Now Haman had just entered #Esth. 5:1the outer court of the king’s palace #Esth. 5:14to suggest that the king hang Mordecai on the gallows that he had prepared for him.
5The king’s servants said to him, “Haman is there, standing in the court.”
And the king said, “Let him come in.”
6So Haman came in, and the king asked him, “What shall be done for the man whom the king delights to honor?”
Now Haman thought in his heart, “Whom would the king delight to honor more than #(Prov. 16:18; 18:12)me?” 7And Haman answered the king, “For the man whom the king delights to honor, 8let a royal robe be brought which the king has worn, and #1 Kin. 1:33a horse on which the king has ridden, which has a royal crest placed on its head. 9Then let this robe and horse be delivered to the hand of one of the king’s most noble princes, that he may array the man whom the king delights to honor. Then parade him on horseback through the city square, #Gen. 41:43and proclaim before him: ‘Thus shall it be done to the man whom the king delights to honor!’ ”
10Then the king said to Haman, “Hurry, take the robe and the horse, as you have suggested, and do so for Mordecai the Jew who sits within the king’s gate! Leave nothing undone of all that you have spoken.”
11So Haman took the robe and the horse, arrayed Mordecai and led him on horseback through the city square, and proclaimed before him, “Thus shall it be done to the man whom the king delights to honor!”
12Afterward Mordecai went back to the king’s gate. But Haman #2 Chr. 26:20hurried to his house, mourning #2 Sam. 15:30; Jer. 14:3, 4and with his head covered. 13When Haman told his wife Zeresh and all his friends everything that had happened to him, his wise men and his wife Zeresh said to him, “If Mordecai, before whom you have begun to fall, is of Jewish descent, you will not prevail against #(Gen. 12:3); Zech. 2:8him but will surely fall before him.”
14While they were still talking with him, the king’s eunuchs came, and hastened to bring Haman to #Esth. 5:8the banquet which Esther had prepared.
