Advice for church leaders
Helping Christian leaders
1Church leaders,#5.1 Church leaders: Or “Elders” or “Presbyters” or “Priests”. I am writing to encourage you. I too am a leader, as well as a witness to Christ's suffering, and I will share in his glory when it is shown to us.
2Just as shepherds watch over their sheep, you must watch over everyone God has placed in your care. Do it willingly in order to please God, and not simply because you think you must. Let it be something you want to do, instead of something you do merely to make money.#Jn 21.15-17. 3Don't be bossy to those people who are in your care, but set an example for them. 4Then when Christ the Chief Shepherd returns, you will be given a crown that will never lose its glory.
5All you young people should obey your elders. In fact, everyone should be humble towards everyone else. The Scriptures say,#Pr 3.34 (LXX).
“God opposes proud people,
but he helps everyone
who is humble.”
6Be humble in the presence of God's mighty power, and he will honour you when the time comes.#Mt 23.12; Lk 14.11; 18.14. 7God cares for you, so turn all your worries over to him.
8Be on your guard and stay awake. Your enemy, the devil, is like a roaring lion, prowling around to find someone to attack. 9But you must resist the devil and stay strong in your faith. You know that all over the world the Lord's followers are suffering just as you are. 10But God shows undeserved kindness to everyone. That's why he appointed Christ Jesus to choose you to share in his eternal glory. You will suffer for a while, but God will make you complete, steady, strong, and firm. 11God will be in control for ever! Amen.
Final greetings
12Silvanus helped me write this short letter, and I consider him a faithful follower of the Lord. I wanted to encourage you and tell you how kind God really is, so that you will keep on having faith in him.#Ac 15.22,40.
13Greetings from the Lord's followers in Babylon.#5.13 Babylon: This may be a secret name for the city of Rome. They are God's chosen ones.#Ac 12.12,25; 13.13; 15.37-39; Col 4.10; Phm 24.
Mark, who is like a son to me, sends his greetings too.
14Give each other a warm greeting. I pray that God will give peace to everyone who belongs to Christ.#5.14 Christ: Some manuscripts add “Amen.”

About the Elders
1Therefore, as a fellow elder and witness # Ac 4:20 to the sufferings of the Messiah and also a participant in the glory about to be revealed, # Rm 8:18; Col 3:4 I exhort the elders among you: 2Shepherd God’s flock among you, # Jr 3:15; 23:1; Jn 21:16; Ac 20:28 not overseeing # Other mss omit overseeing out of compulsion but freely, according to God’s will; # Other mss omit according to God’s will not for the money but eagerly; 3not lording it over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock. 4And when the chief Shepherd # Jn 10:11,14; 21:15-17; Heb 13:20; 1Pt 2:25 appears, you will receive the unfading crown # 1Co 9:25; Rv 12:1 of glory.
5In the same way, you younger men, be subject to the elders. And all of you clothe yourselves with # Lit you tie around yourselves humility toward one another, because
God resists the proud
but gives grace to the humble. # Pr 3:34; Jms 4:6 # Pr 3:34 LXX
6Humble # Lk 14:11 yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand # 1Kg 8:42; 2Ch 6:32; Dn 9:15 of God, so that He may exalt you at the proper time, # Lit in time 7casting all your care on Him, because He cares about you. # Ps 55:22
Conclusion
8Be serious! # 1Th 5:6,8; 2Tm 4:5; 1Pt 1:13; 4:7 Be alert! # Rv 16:15 Your adversary the Devil # Mt 4:1,10; Ac 13:10 is prowling around like a roaring lion, looking for anyone he can devour. 9Resist him # Eph 6:13-14; Jms 4:7 and be firm in the faith, knowing that the same sufferings are being experienced by your fellow believers throughout the world.
10Now the God of all grace, who called you to His eternal glory # 1Pt 5:1,4; 2Pt 3:18 in Christ Jesus, will personally # Lit Himself restore, establish, strengthen, and support you after you have suffered a little. # Or a little while, or to a small extent 11The dominion # Other mss read dominion and glory ; other mss read glory and dominion belongs to Him forever. # Other mss read forever and ever Amen.
12I have written you this brief letter through Silvanus # Or Silas ; Ac 15:22-32; 16:19-40; 17:1-16 # Ac 15:22; 1Th 1:1; 2Th 1:1 (I know him to be a faithful brother) to encourage you and to testify that this is the true grace of God. Take your stand in it! 13The church in Babylon, # Probably refers to Rome # Rv 14:8; 16:19; 17:5,18; 18:2,10,21 also chosen, sends you greetings, as does Mark, my son. 14Greet one another with a kiss of love. # Rm 16:16; 1Co 16:20; 2Co 13:12; 1Th 5:26 Peace # Eph 6:23 to all of you who are in Christ. # Other mss read Christ Jesus. Amen.
