Advice for church leaders
Helping Christian leaders
1Church leaders,#5.1 Church leaders: Or “Elders” or “Presbyters” or “Priests”. I am writing to encourage you. I too am a leader, as well as a witness to Christ's suffering, and I will share in his glory when it is shown to us.
2Just as shepherds watch over their sheep, you must watch over everyone God has placed in your care. Do it willingly in order to please God, and not simply because you think you must. Let it be something you want to do, instead of something you do merely to make money.#Jn 21.15-17. 3Don't be bossy to those people who are in your care, but set an example for them. 4Then when Christ the Chief Shepherd returns, you will be given a crown that will never lose its glory.
5All you young people should obey your elders. In fact, everyone should be humble towards everyone else. The Scriptures say,#Pr 3.34 (LXX).
“God opposes proud people,
but he helps everyone
who is humble.”
6Be humble in the presence of God's mighty power, and he will honour you when the time comes.#Mt 23.12; Lk 14.11; 18.14. 7God cares for you, so turn all your worries over to him.
8Be on your guard and stay awake. Your enemy, the devil, is like a roaring lion, prowling around to find someone to attack. 9But you must resist the devil and stay strong in your faith. You know that all over the world the Lord's followers are suffering just as you are. 10But God shows undeserved kindness to everyone. That's why he appointed Christ Jesus to choose you to share in his eternal glory. You will suffer for a while, but God will make you complete, steady, strong, and firm. 11God will be in control for ever! Amen.
Final greetings
12Silvanus helped me write this short letter, and I consider him a faithful follower of the Lord. I wanted to encourage you and tell you how kind God really is, so that you will keep on having faith in him.#Ac 15.22,40.
13Greetings from the Lord's followers in Babylon.#5.13 Babylon: This may be a secret name for the city of Rome. They are God's chosen ones.#Ac 12.12,25; 13.13; 15.37-39; Col 4.10; Phm 24.
Mark, who is like a son to me, sends his greetings too.
14Give each other a warm greeting. I pray that God will give peace to everyone who belongs to Christ.#5.14 Christ: Some manuscripts add “Amen.”

The Flock of God
1Now I have something to say to the elders in your group. I am also an elder. I myself have seen Christ’s sufferings. And I will share in the glory that will be shown to us. I beg you to 2take care of God’s flock, his people, that you are responsible for. Watch over it because you want to, not because you are forced to do it. That is how God wants it. Do it because you are happy to serve, not because you want money. 3Do not be like a ruler over people you are responsible for. Be good examples to them. 4Then when Christ, the Head Shepherd, comes, you will get a crown. This crown will be glorious, and it will never lose its beauty.
5In the same way, younger men should be willing to be under older men. And all of you should be very humble with each other.
“God is against the proud,
but he gives grace to the humble.” Proverbs 3:34
6So be humble under God’s powerful hand. Then he will lift you up when the right time comes. 7Give all your worries to him, because he cares for you.
8Control yourselves and be careful! The devil is your enemy. And he goes around like a roaring lion looking for someone to eat. 9Refuse to give in to the devil. Stand strong in your faith. You know that your Christian brothers and sisters all over the world are having the same sufferings you have.
10Yes, you will suffer for a short time. But after that, God will make everything right. He will make you strong. He will support you and keep you from falling. He is the God who gives all grace. He called you to share in his glory in Christ. That glory will continue forever. 11All power is his forever and ever. Amen.
Final Greetings
12I wrote this short letter with the help of Silas. I know that he is a faithful brother in Christ. I wrote to comfort and encourage you. I wanted to tell you that this is the true grace of God. Stand strong in that grace.
13The church in Babylon sends you greetings. They were chosen the same as you. Mark, my son in Christ, also greets you. 14Give each other a kiss of Christian love when you meet.
Peace to all of you who are in Christ.
