John 20

20
The Tomb Is Empty
1Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene went to the tomb. She saw that the stone had been moved away from the entrance. 2So she ran to Simon Peter and another disciple, the one Jesus loved. She told them, “They’ve taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we don’t know where they’ve put him!”
3So Peter and the other disciple started out for the tomb. 4Both of them were running, but the other disciple ran faster than Peter and reached the tomb first. 5He bent over and looked in, and he saw the strips of linen lying there. But he didn’t go in. 6Then Simon Peter came along behind him and went right into the tomb. He also saw the strips of linen lying there, 7and he saw the funeral cloth that had been wrapped around Jesus’ head. The cloth was still lying in its place, separate from the linen. 8The disciple who’d reached the tomb first then went inside. He saw and believed. 9Until then they hadn’t understood from Scripture that Jesus had to rise from the dead. 10Then the disciples went back to where they were staying.
Jesus Appears to Mary Magdalene
11But Mary was still standing outside the tomb, crying. As she cried, she bent over to look into the tomb, 12and she saw two angels dressed in white. They were seated where Jesus’ body had been, one at the head and the other at the feet.
13They asked her, “Woman, why are you crying?”
“They’ve taken my Lord away, and I don’t know where they’ve put him,” 14she answered. Then she turned around and saw Jesus standing there. But she didn’t realize that it was Jesus.
15He asked her, “Woman, why are you crying? Who are you looking for?”
She thought he was the gardener, so she said, “Sir, if you’ve carried him away, tell me where you’ve put him, and I’ll go get him.”
16Jesus said to her, “Mary.”
She turned toward him and cried out in the Hebrew language, “Rabboni!” (That means Teacher.)
17Jesus told her, “Don’t hold on to me, because I haven’t ascended to the Father yet. Instead, go to those who believe in me and tell them, ‘I’m ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.’ ”
18Mary Magdalene went and told the disciples, “I have seen the Lord!” Then she told them that he’d said these things to her.
Jesus Appears to His Disciples
19On the evening of that first day of the week, the disciples were gathered together. They had locked the doors because they were afraid of the Jewish leaders. Jesus came in and stood among them. He said, “May peace be with you!” 20Then he showed them his hands and his side. The disciples were overjoyed when they saw the Lord.
21Jesus said again, “May peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I’m sending you.” 22Then he breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit. 23If you forgive anyone’s sins, their sins are forgiven. If you don’t forgive them, those sins not forgiven.”
Jesus Appears to Thomas
24Thomas, one of the 12 disciples (he was also called Didymus), wasn’t with the others when Jesus came. 25So they told him, “We’ve seen the Lord!”
But he said to them, “Unless I see the nail marks in his hands, and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into his side where the spear went, I won’t believe.”
26A week later, Jesus’ disciples were in the house again. This time Thomas was with them. Even though the doors were locked, Jesus came in and stood among them. He said, “May peace be with you!” 27Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here and look at my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe.”
28Thomas said to him, “My Lord and my God!”
29Then Jesus told him, “Because you’ve seen me, you have believed. Blessed are those who haven’t seen me but have still believed.”
The Purpose of John’s Gospel
30Jesus performed many other signs when he was with his disciples. They’re not written down in this book. 31But these signs have been written down so that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing, you may have life in his name.
