Hebrews 2

2
A Warning to Pay Attention
1So we must pay very careful attention to what we’ve heard, so that we don’t drift away from it. 2The message that God spoke through the angels had to be obeyed. Every time people broke the Law or didn’t obey God, they were punished. 3So then how will we escape if we don’t pay attention to the even greater salvation that the Lord Jesus announced? Those who heard him told us what he said, 4and then God showed that their report was true by doing signs and wonders and various kinds of miracles and by giving out gifts from the Holy Spirit as he wished.
Jesus Was Made Fully Human
5God hasn’t put angels in charge of the world that’s going to come, which we’ve been talking about. 6There’s a place in Scripture where someone has said,
“What are human beings that you should be concerned about them?
What is a son of man that you take care of him?
7But you made them a little lower than the angels,
you crowned them with glory and honor,
8and you put everything under their control.”
When God put everything under their control, he didn’t leave anything out of their control. Everything isn’t under their control just yet. 9But we can see that Jesus has already been crowned with glory and honor because he suffered and died. He was made lower than the angels for a little while so that by the grace of God he could taste death for everyone.
10God, who made everything, wanted his many sons and daughters to share in his glory. He chose Jesus to be the one to lead them into their salvation, and he made him perfect through suffering so he could accomplish that. 11Jesus, who makes people holy, belongs to the same family as the people he makes holy. That’s why he isn’t ashamed to call them his brothers and sisters. 12He says,
“I’ll announce your name to my brothers and sisters.
I’ll sing your praises among those who worship you.”
13Again he says,
“I will put my trust in him.”
He also says,
“Here I am, and here are the children God has given me.”
14Because those children have bodies made out of flesh and blood, Jesus became human like them in order to die for them. By doing that, he could stop the one who rules over the kingdom of death, that is, the devil, 15and set free people who were held as slaves all their lives by the fear of death. 16It’s certainly not angels that he helps, but Abraham’s children. 17So he had to be made like them—fully human in every way. That way he could serve God as a merciful and faithful high priest and purify the people from their sins. 18Because he himself suffered when he was tempted, he’s able to help others who are being tempted.
