War against Jerusalem
1Now it came about in the days of Ahaz, the son of Jotham, the son of Uzziah, king of Judah, that Rezin the king of Aram and Pekah the son of Remaliah, king of Israel, went up to Jerusalem to wage war against it, but could not #7:1 Lit fight againstconquer it. 2When it was reported to the house of David, saying, “The Arameans have taken a stand by Ephraim,” his heart and the hearts of his people shook as the trees of the forest shake from the wind.
3Then the Lord said to Isaiah, “Go out now to meet Ahaz, you and your son #7:3 I.e., a remnant shall returnShear-jashub, at the end of the conduit of the upper pool, on the road to the #7:3 I.e., launderer’sfuller’s field, 4and say to him, ‘Take care and be calm, have no fear and do not be fainthearted because of these two stumps of smoldering logs, on account of the fierce anger of Rezin and Aram and the son of Remaliah. 5Because Aram, with Ephraim and the son of Remaliah, has planned evil against you, saying, 6“Let’s go up against Judah and #7:6 Or demolishterrorize it, and take it for ourselves by assault and set up the son of Tabeel as king in the midst of it,” 7this is what the Lord #7:7 Heb YHWH, usually rendered LordGod says: “It shall not stand nor shall it come to pass. 8For the head of Aram is Damascus, and the head of Damascus is Rezin (now within another sixty-five years Ephraim will be broken to pieces, so that it is no longer a people), 9and the head of Ephraim is Samaria, and the head of Samaria is the son of Remaliah. If you will not believe, you certainly shall not #7:9 Or endurelast.” ’ ”
The Child Immanuel
10Then the Lord spoke again to Ahaz, saying, 11“Ask for a sign for yourself from the Lord your God; #7:11 As in most ancient versions; MT make the request deep or highmake it deep as Sheol or high as #7:11 Lit heightsheaven.” 12But Ahaz said, “I will not ask, nor will I put the Lord to the test!” 13Then he said, “Listen now, house of David! Is it too trivial a thing for you to #7:13 Lit make men wearytry the patience of men, that you will #7:13 Lit make my God wearytry the patience of my God as well? 14Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, the #7:14 As in LXX; MT young unmarried womanvirgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and she will name Him #7:14 I.e., God is with usImmanuel. 15He will eat #7:15 Possibly buttercurds and honey #7:15 Lit with respect to his knowingat the time He knows enough to refuse evil and choose good. 16For before the boy knows enough to refuse evil and choose good, the land whose two kings you dread will be abandoned.
Trials to Come for Judah
17The Lord will bring on you, on your people, and on your father’s house such days as have not come since the day that Ephraim separated from Judah—the days of the king of Assyria.”
18On that day the Lord will whistle for the fly that is in the #7:18 Or mouth of the rivers; i.e., the Nile Deltaremotest part of the canals of Egypt and for the bee that is in the land of Assyria. 19They will all come and settle on the steep #7:19 Or wadisravines, on the ledges of the cliffs, on all the thorn bushes, and on all the watering places.
20On that day the Lord will shave with a razor, hired from regions beyond the Euphrates River (that is, with the king of Assyria), the head and the hair of the legs; and it will also remove the beard.
21Now on that day a person may keep alive only a heifer and a pair of sheep; 22and because of the abundance of the milk produced he will eat #7:22 Possibly buttercurds, for everyone who is left within the land will eat #7:22 Possibly buttercurds and honey.
23And it will come about on that day, that every place where there used to be a thousand vines, valued at a thousand shekels of silver, will become briars and thorns. 24People will come there with bows and arrows, because all the land will be briars and thorns. 25As for all the hills which used to be cultivated with the plow, you will not go there for fear of briars and thorns; but they will become a place for #7:25 Lit pastureland ofpasturing oxen and for sheep to trample.

Isaiah 7
7
The Sign of Immanuel
1When Ahaz son of Jotham, the son of Uzziah, was king of Judah, King Rezin of Aram and Pekah son of Remaliah king of Israel marched up to fight against Jerusalem, but they could not overpower it.
2Now the house of David was told, “Aram has allied itself with#7:2 Or has set up camp in Ephraim”; so the hearts of Ahaz and his people were shaken, as the trees of the forest are shaken by the wind.
3Then the Lord said to Isaiah, “Go out, you and your son Shear-Jashub,#7:3 Shear-Jashub means a remnant will return. to meet Ahaz at the end of the aqueduct of the Upper Pool, on the road to the Launderer’s Field. 4Say to him, ‘Be careful, keep calm and don’t be afraid. Do not lose heart because of these two smoldering stubs of firewood—because of the fierce anger of Rezin and Aram and of the son of Remaliah. 5Aram, Ephraim and Remaliah’s son have plotted your ruin, saying, 6“Let us invade Judah; let us tear it apart and divide it among ourselves, and make the son of Tabeel king over it.” 7Yet this is what the Sovereign Lord says:
“ ‘It will not take place,
it will not happen,
8for the head of Aram is Damascus,
and the head of Damascus is only Rezin.
Within sixty-five years
Ephraim will be too shattered to be a people.
9The head of Ephraim is Samaria,
and the head of Samaria is only Remaliah’s son.
If you do not stand firm in your faith,
you will not stand at all.’ ”
10Again the Lord spoke to Ahaz, 11“Ask the Lord your God for a sign, whether in the deepest depths or in the highest heights.”
12But Ahaz said, “I will not ask; I will not put the Lord to the test.”
13Then Isaiah said, “Hear now, you house of David! Is it not enough to try the patience of humans? Will you try the patience of my God also? 14Therefore the Lord himself will give you#7:14 The Hebrew is plural. a sign: The virgin#7:14 Or young woman will conceive and give birth to a son, and#7:14 Masoretic Text; Dead Sea Scrolls son, and he or son, and they will call him Immanuel.#7:14 Immanuel means God with us. 15He will be eating curds and honey when he knows enough to reject the wrong and choose the right, 16for before the boy knows enough to reject the wrong and choose the right, the land of the two kings you dread will be laid waste. 17The Lord will bring on you and on your people and on the house of your father a time unlike any since Ephraim broke away from Judah—he will bring the king of Assyria.”
Assyria, the Lord’s Instrument
18In that day the Lord will whistle for flies from the Nile delta in Egypt and for bees from the land of Assyria. 19They will all come and settle in the steep ravines and in the crevices in the rocks, on all the thornbushes and at all the water holes. 20In that day the Lord will use a razor hired from beyond the Euphrates River—the king of Assyria—to shave your heads and private parts, and to cut off your beards also. 21In that day, a person will keep alive a young cow and two goats. 22And because of the abundance of the milk they give, there will be curds to eat. All who remain in the land will eat curds and honey. 23In that day, in every place where there were a thousand vines worth a thousand silver shekels,#7:23 That is, about 25 pounds or about 12 kilograms there will be only briers and thorns. 24Hunters will go there with bow and arrow, for the land will be covered with briers and thorns. 25As for all the hills once cultivated by the hoe, you will no longer go there for fear of the briers and thorns; they will become places where cattle are turned loose and where sheep run.
