Exodus 28
28
CHAPTER 28
1Also apply [or present] thou to thee, or bring to thy presence, Aaron, thy brother, with his sons, from the midst of the sons of Israel, that Aaron, Nadab, and Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar, be set in priesthood to me.
2And thou shalt make an holy cloth to Aaron, thy brother, into glory and fairness.
3And thou shalt speak to all [the] wise men in heart, which I have filled with the spirit of prudence, that they make clothes to Aaron, in which he shall be hallowed, and shall minister to me.
4Forsooth these shall be the clothes, which they shall make; they shall make a rational, that is, an ouch or brooch upon the breast, in which doom and truth, or Urim and Thum-mim shall be written, and a cloth on the shoulders [or cape], a coat, and a strait linen cloth, a mitre, and a girdle; holy clothes to Aaron, thy brother, and to his sons, that they be set in priesthood to me.
5And they shall take gold, and jacinth, and purple, and red silk twice-dyed, and bis;
6forsooth they shall make the cloth on the shoulders [or cape] of gold, and of jacinth, and of purple, and of red silk twice-dyed, and of bis folded again, by embroidery work [or needle-work] of diverse colours.
7It shall have two hems joined to ever either side of [the] highness, that they go into one.
8That weaving, and all [the] diversity of the work shall be of gold, and of jacinth, and of purple, and of red silk twice-dyed, and of bis folded again.
9And thou shalt take two stones of onyx, and thou shalt engrave in them the names of the sons of Israel,
10six names in one stone, and six others in the tother stone, by the order of their birth;
11by the work of an engraver, and by the painting of a man that adorneth with gems, thou shalt engrave those stones with the names of the sons of Israel; and thou shalt enclose and encompass with gold.
12And thou shalt set those stones in ever either side of the cloth on the shoulders [or cape], as a memorial to the sons of Israel; and Aaron shall bear the names of them before the Lord on ever either shoulder, for remembering.
13And thou shalt make hooks of gold,
14and two little chains of cleanest gold, cleaving to themselves together, which little chains thou shalt set in the hooks.
15Also thou shalt make the rational of doom by work of diverse colours, after the weaving of the cloth on the shoulders [or cape], of gold, jacinth, and purple, of red silk twice-dyed, and of bis folded again.
16It shall be four-cornered, and double; it shall have the measure of a palm of an hand, as well in the length, as in breadth.
17And thou shalt set therein four orders of stones; in the first order shall be the stone sardius, topaz, and smaragdus;
18in the second order shall be carbuncle, sapphire, and jasper;
19in the third order shall be ligure, agate, and amethyst;
20and in the fourth order shall be crystallite, onyx, and beryl; these [or they] shall be enclosed in gold, by their orders,
21and shall have the names of the sons of Israel; these [or they] shall be engraved with twelve names; all the stones by themselves, with the names of all the sons by themselves, by [the] twelve lineages.
22Thou shalt make in the rational chains cleaving to themselves together of purest gold,
23and thou shalt make two golden rings, which thou shalt set in ever either highness of the rational.
24And thou shalt join the golden chains with the rings that be in the margins thereof,
25and thou shalt couple the ends of the chains to the two hooks in ever either side of the cloth on the shoulders [or cape], that beholdeth the rational.
26And thou shalt make two golden rings, which thou shalt set in the high-ness of the rational, and in the hems of the cloth on the shoulders [or cape], that be even against, and behold the latter things thereof.
27Also and thou shalt make twain [or two] other golden rings, that shall be set in ever either side of the cloth on the shoulders [or cape] beneath, that beholdeth against the face of the lower joining, that it may be set covenably with the cloth on the shoulders [or cape].
28And the rational be bound by his rings with the rings of the cloth on the shoulders [or cape], with a lace of jacinth, that the joining made may craftily dwell, and that the rational and the cloth on the shoulders [or cape] may not be separated each from other.
29And Aaron shall bear the names of the sons of Israel in the rational of doom on his breast, when he entereth into the saintuary, a memorial before the Lord without end.
30Forsooth thou shalt set in the rational of doom, teaching and truth or Urim and Thummim, which shall be in the breast of Aaron, when he entereth before the Lord; and he shall bear the doom of the sons of Israel in his breast in the sight of the Lord ever[more].
31And thou shalt make the coat of the cloth on the shoulders [or cape] all of jacinth,
32in whose middle above shall be an hood, that is, an hole for the head, and a woven hem by compass thereof, as it is wont to be done in the hems of clothes, lest it be broken lightly.
33Forsooth beneath at the feet of the same coat, by compass, thou shalt make as pomegranates, of jacinth, and purple, and of red silk twice-dyed, and of bis folded again;
34while small bells be meddled [or mingled] in the midst, so that a little gold bell be and a pomegranate, and again another little bell of gold and a pomegranate.
35And Aaron shall be clothed with that coat, or alb, in the office of his service, that the sound be heard, when he entereth into the saintuary, and goeth out, in the sight of the Lord; and that he die not.
36And thou shalt make a plate of purest gold, in which thou shalt engrave by the work of an engraver, The Holy to the Lord, that is, the name of the Lord, Tetragrammaton.
37And thou shalt bind that plate with a lace of jacinth, and it shall be on the mitre, and it shall nigh [to] the forehead of the bishop.
38And Aaron shall bear the wicked-nesses of those things that the sons of Israel shall offer, and hallow in all their gifts to God, and in their free gifts to men; and the plate shall ever[more] be in Aaron’s forehead, that the Lord be pleased to them.
39And thou shalt bind the coat of bis, that is, the linen cloth, and the mitre of bis, and thou shalt make also a girdle, by embroidery work.
40Forsooth thou shalt make ready to Aaron’s sons linen coats, that is, linen clothes, and girdles, and mitres, into glory and fairness.
41And thou shalt clothe Aaron, thy brother, with all these things, and his sons with him. And thou shalt anoint them, and make sacred the hands of them all; and thou shalt hallow them, that they be set in priesthood to me.
42Also thou shalt make to them linen breeches, that they cover the flesh of their filth[hood], from the reins unto their hips.
43And Aaron and his sons shall use those breeches, when they shall enter into the tabernacle of witnessing, or when they nigh to the altar, that they minister in the saintuary, lest they be guilty of wickedness, and die; it shall be a lawful thing everlasting to Aaron, and to his seed after him.

Exodus 28

The Clothes for the High Priest
(Exodus 39.1-7)
The Lord said to Moses:
1Send for your brother Aaron and his sons Nadab, Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar. They are the ones I have chosen from Israel to serve as my priests. 2Make Aaron some beautiful clothes that are worthy of a high priest. 3Aaron is to be dedicated as my high priest, and his clothes must be made only by persons who possess skills that I have given them. 4Here are the items that need to be made: a breastpiece, a priestly vest, a robe, an embroidered shirt, a turban, and a sash. These sacred clothes are to be made for your brother Aaron and his sons who will be my priests. 5Use only gold and fine linen, woven with blue, purple, and red wool, for making these clothes.
The Vest for the High Priest
(Exodus 39.2-7)
The Lord said:
6-8Make the entire priestly vest of fine linen skillfully woven with blue, purple, and red wool, and decorate it with gold. It is to have two shoulder straps to support it and a sash that fastens around the waist.
9-12Put two onyx#28.9-12 onyx: See the note at 25.7. stones in gold settings, then attach one to each of the shoulder straps. On one of these stones engrave the names of Israel's first six sons in the order of their birth. And do the same with his remaining six sons on the other stone. In this way Aaron will always carry the names of the tribes of Israel when he enters the holy place, and I will never forget my people.
13-14Attach two gold settings to the shoulder straps and fasten them with two braided chains of pure gold.
The Breastpiece for the High Priest
(Exodus 39.8-21)
The Lord said:
15From the same costly material make a breastpiece for the high priest to use in finding out what I want my people to do. 16It is to be 22 centimeters square and folded double 17with four rows of three precious stones: In the first row put a carnelian, a chrysolite, and an emerald; 18in the second row a turquoise, a sapphire, and a diamond; 19in the third row a jacinth, an agate, and an amethyst; 20and in the fourth row a beryl, an onyx, and a jasper.#28.20 jasper: The stones mentioned in verses 17-20 are of different colors: carnelian is deep red or reddish white; chrysolite is olive green; emerald is green; turquoise is blue or blue green; sapphire is blue; diamond is colorless or white; jacinth is reddish orange; agate has circles of brown and white; amethyst is deep purple; beryl is green or bluish green; onyx has bands of different colors; and jasper is usually green or clear. Mount the stones in delicate gold settings 21and engrave on each of them the name of one of the twelve tribes of Israel.
22-25Attach two gold rings to the upper front corners of the breastpiece and fasten them with two braided gold chains to gold settings on the shoulder straps. 26Attach two other gold rings to the lower inside corners next to the vest 27and two more near the bottom of the shoulder straps right above the sash. 28Then take a blue cord and tie the two lower rings on the breastpiece to those on the vest. This will keep the breastpiece in place.
29In this way Aaron will have the names of the twelve tribes of Israel written on his heart each time he enters the holy place, and I will never forget my people. 30#Nu 27.21; Dt 33.8; Ezra 2.63; Ne 7.65. He must also wear on his breastpiece the two small objects#28.30 two small objects: The Hebrew text has “urim and thummim,” which may have been made of wood, stone, or metal, and were used in some way to receive answers from God. that he uses to receive answers from me.
The Other High-Priestly Clothes
(Exodus 39.22-26,30,31)
The Lord said:
31Under his vest Aaron must wear a robe of blue wool 32with an opening in the center for his head. Be sure to bind the material around the collar to keep it from wearing out. 33-34#Si 45.9. Along the hem of the robe weave pomegranates#28.33,34 pomegranates: A bright red fruit that looks like an apple. of blue, purple, and red wool with a gold bell between each of them. 35If Aaron wears these clothes when he enters the holy place as my high priest, the sound of the bells will be heard, and his life will not be in danger.
36On a narrow strip of pure gold engrave the words: “Dedicated to the Lord.” 37Fasten it to the front of Aaron's turban with a blue cord, 38so he can wear it on his forehead. This will show that he will take on himself the guilt for any sins the people of Israel commit in offering their gifts to me, and I will forgive them.
39Make Aaron's robe and turban of fine linen and decorate his sash with fancy needlework.
The Clothes for the Other Priests
(Exodus 39.27-29)
40Since Aaron's sons are priests, they should also look dignified. So make robes, sashes, and special caps for them. 41Then dress Aaron and his sons in these clothes, pour olive oil on their heads, and ordain them as my priests.
42Make linen shorts for them that reach from the waist down to the thigh, so they won't expose themselves. 43Whenever they enter the sacred tent or serve at the altar or enter the holy place, they must wear these shorts, or else they will be guilty and die. This same rule applies to any of their descendants who serve as priests.
