Exodus 15

CHAPTER 15

1Then Moses sang, and the sons of Israel, this song to the Lord; and they said, Sing we to the Lord, for he is magnified gloriously; he hath cast down the horse and the horseman into the sea.

2My strength and my praising is the Lord; and he is made to me into health. This is my God, and I shall glorify him; the God of my father, and I shall enhance or exalt him.

3The Lord is a man-fighter, his name is Almighty;

4he casted down into the sea the chariots of Pharaoh, and his host. His chosen princes were drowned in the Red Sea or the Sea of Reeds;

5the deep waters covered them; they went down into the depth as a stone.

6Lord, thy right hand is magnified in strength; Lord, thy right hand smote the enemy.

7And in the multitude of thy glory, thou hast put down all thine adver-saries; thou sentest thine ire, that devoured them as stubble.

8And waters were gathered [together] in the spirit of thy strong vengeance; [the] flowing water stood, [the] deep waters were gathered [together] in the midst of the sea.

9The enemy said, I shall pursue, and I shall overtake; I shall part spoils, my soul, that is, my will, shall be fulfilled. I shall draw out my sword; mine hand shall slay them.

10Thy spirit blew, and the sea covered them; they were drowned as lead in great waters.

11Lord, who is like thee in strong men, who is like thee? thou art a great doer in holiness; fearful, and praiseable, and doing miracles.

12Thou heldest forth thine hand, and the earth devoured them;

13thou were leader in thy mercy to thy people, which thou again-boughtest; and thou hast borne him in thy strength to thine holy dwelling place.

14Peoples went up, and were wroth; sorrows held the dwellers of Philistia.

15Then the princes of Edom were troubled; trembling held the strong men of Moab. All the dwellers of Canaan dreaded, or were encumbered;

16inward dread fall on them, and outward dread in the greatness of thine arm. Be they made unmoveable as a stone, till thy people pass, Lord; till thy people pass, whom thou wield-edest.

17Thou shalt bring them in, and thou shalt plant them in the hill of thine heritage; in the most steadfast dwelling place which thou hast wrought, Lord; Lord, thy saintuary, which thine hands made steadfast.

18The Lord shall reign without end, and over all things.

19Forsooth Pharaoh, on horse, entered with his chariots and [his] horsemen into the sea, and the Lord brought the waters of the sea on them; soothly the sons of Israel went by the dry place, in [the] midst of the sea.

20Therefore Marie, the prophetess, the sister of Aaron, took a tympan in her hand, and all the women went out after her with tympans and companies;

21to which she sang before, and said, Sing we to the Lord, for he is magnified gloriously; he hath cast down into the sea the horse and the rider of him.

22Forsooth Moses took Israel from the Red Sea, and they went out into the desert of Shur; and they went three days by the wilderness, and they found not water.

23And they came into Marah, and they might not drink the waters of Marah, for they were bitter; wherefore he putted a covenable name to the place, and called it Marah, that is, bitterness.

24And the people grutched against Moses, and said, What shall we drink?

25And Moses cried to the Lord, which showed to him a tree; and when he had put that tree into the waters, those [or they] were turned into sweetness. There the Lord ordained commandments and dooms to the people, and there he assayed the people,

26and said, If thou shalt hear the voice of thy Lord God, and shalt do that that is rightful before him, and shalt obey to his commandments, and shalt keep all his behests, I shall not bring in on thee all the sickness, which I have put in Egypt, for I am thy Lord Saviour.

27Forsooth the sons of Israel came into Elim, where were twelve wells of water, and seventy palm trees, and they setted tents beside the waters.

The Song of Moses

1 # Rev 15.3. #3 Macc 2.8. #3 Macc 6.4. Moses and the Israelites sang this song in praise of the Lord:

I sing praises to the Lord

for his great victory!

He has thrown the horses

and their riders

into the sea.

2 # Ps 118.14; Is 12.2. The Lord is my strength,

the reason for my song,

because he has saved me.

I praise and honor the Lord—

he is my God and the God

of my ancestors.

3The Lord is his name,

and he is a warrior!

4He threw the chariots and army

of Egypt's king#15.4 Egypt's king: See the note at 1.11.

into the Red Sea,#15.4 Red Sea: See the note at 13.18.

and he drowned the best

of the king's officers.

5They sank to the bottom

just like stones.

6With the tremendous force

of your right arm, our Lord,

you crushed your enemies.

7What a great victory was yours,

when you defeated everyone

who opposed you.

Your fiery anger wiped them out,

as though they were straw.

8You were so furious

that the sea piled up

like a wall,

and the ocean depths

curdled like cheese.

9Your enemies boasted

that they would

pursue and capture us,

divide up our possessions,

treat us as they wished,

then take out their swords

and kill us right there.

10But when you got furious,

they sank like lead,

swallowed by ocean waves.

11Our Lord, no other gods

compare with you—

Majestic and holy!

Fearsome and glorious!

Miracle worker!

12When you signaled

with your right hand,

your enemies were swallowed

deep into the earth.

13The people you rescued

were led by your powerful love

to your holy place.

14Nations learned of this

and trembled—

Philistines shook with horror.

15The leaders of Edom and of Moab

were terrified.

Everyone in Canaan fainted,

16struck down by fear.

Our Lord, your powerful arm

kept them still as a rock

until the people you rescued

to be your very own

had marched by.

17You will let your people settle

on your own mountain,

where you chose to live

and to be worshiped.

18Our Lord, you will rule forever!

The Song of Miriam

19The Lord covered the royal Egyptian cavalry and chariots with the sea, after the Israelites had walked safely through on dry ground. 20Miriam the sister of Aaron was a prophet. So she took her tambourine and led the other women out to play their tambourines and to dance. 21Then she sang to them:

“Sing praises to the Lord

for his great victory!

He has thrown the horses

and their riders into the sea.”

Bitter Water at Marah

22After the Israelites left the Red Sea,#15.22 Red Sea: See the note at 13.18. Moses led them through the Shur Desert for three days, before finding water. 23They did find water at Marah, but it was bitter, which is how that place got its name.#15.23 Marah … name: In Hebrew “Marah” means “bitter.” 24The people complained and said, “Moses, what are we going to drink?”

25 # Si 38.5. Moses asked the Lord for help, and the Lord told him to throw a certain piece of wood into the water. Moses did so, and the water became fit to drink.

At Marah the Lord tested his people and also gave them some laws and teachings. 26Then he said, “I am the Lord your God, and I cure your diseases. If you obey me by doing right and by following my laws and teachings, I won't punish you with the diseases I sent on the Egyptians.”

27Later the Israelites came to Elim, where there were twelve springs and 70 palm trees. So they camped there.
