Intro
About the Book of Obadiah
There were many wars between the Israelites and the people from Edom. #1:0 The Israelites were the descendants of Jacob, who was also called Israel. Jacob's 12 sons became the ancestors of Israel's 12 tribes. The land that God gave to them as their home was called Israel. After King Solomon died, the nation of Israel became two kingdoms. The nation in the north was called Israel. The nation in the south was called Judah. Edom was a country near Israel. It was also called Seir. Genesis 27 and Numbers 20:14-21 tell us why these wars happened.
God gave Obadiah a message for the Israelites who lived in Judah. He does this after Babylon's army has destroyed Jerusalem. #1:0 Babylon was a rich and powerful city on the Euphrates River. The king of Babylon ruled many other countries. Nebuchadnezzar was the king of Babylon who attacked Jerusalem, the capital city of Judah. People from Edom were happy when Babylon's army attacked Jerusalem. They refused to help God's people. So God was angry with the people of Edom. He warned them in this message that he gave to Obadiah.
In his message, God tells the Israelites that he still loves them. He remembers what the people of Edom did. God tells the Israelites that he will punish the people of Edom. God's people will be powerful once again.
