About the Book of Joel
Joel was a prophet who may have lived in Judah. #1:0 Judah was the land that belonged to the Israelite tribe of Judah. When the nation of Israel divided into two kingdoms, Judah was the name of the kingdom in the south. We do not know much about him or when he spoke God's message.
Joel told Israel's people that God would punish them. They thought that on the day of the Lord, he would bless them and he would punish their enemies. But Joel said that God would punish his people, and after that he would again show his love to them. #1:0 Israel's people were the descendants of Jacob, who was also called Israel. Jacob's 12 sons became the ancestors of Israel's 12 tribes.
Joel told Israel's people that they needed to turn back to God and obey him. God would not bless them unless they did that. He wanted them to know that the day of the Lord is a day when God will judge everyone.
The apostle Peter used Joel's message to tell people about the Holy Spirit. See Acts 2:17-21 and Joel 2:28-32.
