About the Book of Haggai
God punished the people of Judah because they did not serve him in a good way. #1:0 Judah was the land that belonged to the Israelite tribe of Judah. When the nation of Israel divided into two kingdoms, Judah was the name of the kingdom in the south. Jerusalem was its capital city. God had given his laws to them, but the people did not obey them. God sent Babylon's army to attack Jerusalem. They destroyed God's temple in the city. God sent his people to live as exiles in Babylon. #1:0 Babylon was a rich and powerful city on the Euphrates River. The king of Babylon ruled many other countries. Nebuchadnezzar was the king of Babylon who attacked Jerusalem, the capital city of Judah. The temple of God was in Jerusalem.
After many years, they returned to their own country, and to Jerusalem. But they still did not serve God in the way that he wanted. So God sent his prophet Haggai to speak to them.
This book is about four messages that God gave to Haggai to tell his people. It also tells us what the people did after they heard Haggai's message.
