Nahum 1
1
1A revelation about Nineveh. The book of the vision of Nahum the Elkoshite. 2Yahweh#1:2 “Yahweh” is God’s proper Name, sometimes rendered “Lord” (all caps) in other translations. is a jealous God#1:2 The Hebrew word rendered “God” is “אֱלֹהִ֑ים” (Elohim). and avenges. Yahweh avenges and is full of wrath. Yahweh takes vengeance on his adversaries, and he maintains wrath against his enemies. 3Yahweh is slow to anger, and great in power, and will by no means leave the guilty unpunished. Yahweh has his way in the whirlwind and in the storm, and the clouds are the dust of his feet. 4He rebukes the sea and makes it dry, and dries up all the rivers. Bashan and Carmel languish. The flower of Lebanon languishes. 5The mountains quake before him, and the hills melt away. The earth trembles at his presence, yes, the world, and all who dwell in it. 6Who can stand before his indignation? Who can endure the fierceness of his anger? His wrath is poured out like fire, and the rocks are broken apart by him. 7Yahweh is good, a stronghold in the day of trouble; and he knows those who take refuge in him. 8But with an overflowing flood, he will make a full end of her place, and will pursue his enemies into darkness. 9What do you plot against Yahweh? He will make a full end. Affliction won’t rise up the second time. 10For entangled like thorns, and drunken as with their drink, they are consumed utterly like dry stubble. 11One has gone out of you who devises evil against Yahweh, who counsels wickedness.
12Yahweh says: “Though they are in full strength and likewise many, even so they will be cut down and pass away. Though I have afflicted you, I will afflict you no more. 13Now I will break his yoke from off you, and will burst your bonds apart.”
14Yahweh has commanded concerning you: “No more descendants will bear your name. Out of the house of your gods, I will cut off the engraved image and the molten image. I will make your grave, for you are vile.”
15Behold,#1:15 “Behold”, from “הִנֵּה”, means look at, take notice, observe, see, or gaze at. It is often used as an interjection. on the mountains the feet of him who brings good news, who publishes peace! Keep your feasts, Judah! Perform your vows, for the wicked one will no more pass through you. He is utterly cut off.

1An oracle about Nineveh: the scroll containing the vision of Nahum the Elkoshite.
Power of the creator
2The LORD is a jealous and vengeful God;
the LORD is vengeful and strong in wrath.
The LORD is vengeful against his foes;
he rages against his enemies.
3The LORD is very patient but great in power;
the LORD punishes.
His way is in whirlwind and storm;
clouds are the dust of his feet.
4He can blast the sea and make it dry up;
he can dry up all the rivers.
Bashan and Carmel wither;
the bud of Lebanon withers.
5The mountains quake because of him;
the hills melt away.
The earth heaves before him—
the world and all who dwell in it.
6Who can stand before his indignation?
Who can confront the heat of his fury?
His wrath pours out like fire;
the rocks are shattered because of him.
7The LORD is good,
a haven in a day of distress.
He acknowledges those who take refuge in him.
8With a rushing flood, he will utterly destroy her#1.8 her; likely Nineveh place
and pursue his enemies into darkness.
A challenge to God’s enemies
9What are you plotting against the LORD?
He is one who can annihilate!
Distress will not arise twice.
10They are tangled up like thorns,
like drunkards in their cups.
They are consumed like stubble
that is entirely dried up.
11From you#1.11 you (feminine singular); likely Nineveh goes out
one who plots evil against the LORD—
a worthless counselor!
Reassurance for God’s people
12The LORD proclaims:
Though once they were a healthy and numerous force,
they have been cut off and have disappeared.
I have afflicted you;
I won’t afflict you further, Zion.#1.12 Heb lacks Zion.
13Now I will break off his yoke from you
and tear off your chains.
Assyrian king’s future doom
14The LORD has commanded concerning you:
You will have no children to carry on your name.
I will remove carved idol and cast image from the house of your gods;
I will make your grave, for you are worthless.
15 # 1.15 2:1 in Heb Look, on the mountains: the feet of a messenger who announces peace!
Celebrate your festivals, Judah!
Fulfill your solemn promises!
The worthless one will never again invade you;
he has been completely cut off.
