Jeremiah 35
35
1The word which came to Jeremiah from the Lord in the days of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah: 2“Go to the house of the Rechabites, and speak with them, and bring them to the house of the Lord, into one of the chambers; then offer them wine to drink.” 3So I took Ja-azaniah the son of Jeremiah, son of Habazziniah, and his brothers, and all his sons, and the whole house of the Rechabites. 4I brought them to the house of the Lord into the chamber of the sons of Hanan the son of Igdaliah, the man of God, which was near the chamber of the princes, above the chamber of Ma-aseiah the son of Shallum, keeper of the threshold. 5Then I set before the Rechabites pitchers full of wine, and cups; and I said to them, “Drink wine.” 6But they answered, “We will drink no wine, for Jonadab the son of Rechab, our father, commanded us, ‘You shall not drink wine, neither you nor your sons for ever; 7you shall not build a house; you shall not sow seed; you shall not plant or have a vineyard; but you shall live in tents all your days, that you may live many days in the land where you sojourn.’ 8We have obeyed the voice of Jonadab the son of Rechab, our father, in all that he commanded us, to drink no wine all our days, ourselves, our wives, our sons, or our daughters, 9and not to build houses to dwell in. We have no vineyard or field or seed; 10but we have lived in tents, and have obeyed and done all that Jonadab our father commanded us. 11But when Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon came up against the land, we said, ‘Come, and let us go to Jerusalem for fear of the army of the Chaldeans and the army of the Syrians.’ So we are living in Jerusalem.”
12Then the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah: 13“Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: Go and say to the men of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, Will you not receive instruction and listen to my words? says the Lord. 14The command which Jonadab the son of Rechab gave to his sons, to drink no wine, has been kept; and they drink none to this day, for they have obeyed their father's command. I have spoken to you persistently, but you have not listened to me. 15I have sent to you all my servants the prophets, sending them persistently, saying, ‘Turn now every one of you from his evil way, and amend your doings, and do not go after other gods to serve them, and then you shall dwell in the land which I gave to you and your fathers.’ But you did not incline your ear or listen to me. 16The sons of Jonadab the son of Rechab have kept the command which their father gave them, but this people has not obeyed me. 17Therefore, thus says the Lord, the God of hosts, the God of Israel: Behold, I am bringing on Judah and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem all the evil that I have pronounced against them; because I have spoken to them and they have not listened, I have called to them and they have not answered.”
18But to the house of the Rechabites Jeremiah said, “Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: Because you have obeyed the command of Jonadab your father, and kept all his precepts, and done all that he commanded you, 19therefore thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: Jonadab the son of Rechab shall never lack a man to stand before me.”

The Faithfulness of the Rechabites
1The word that came to Jeremiah from Yahweh in the days of Jehoiakim, the son of Josiah, the king of Judah, saying,#Literally “to say” 2“Go to the house of the Rechabites, and speak with them, and bring them to the house of Yahweh into one of the chambers, and give them wine to drink.” 3So I took Jaazaniah, the son of Jeremiah, the son of Habazziniah, and his brothers, and all his sons, and the whole of the house of the Rechabites, 4and I brought them to the house of Yahweh, into the chamber of the sons of Hanan, the son of Igdaliah, the man of God, which was beside the chamber of the officials, which was above the chamber of Maaseiah, the son of Shallum, the keeper of the threshold.
5Then I set#Literally “gave” before#Literally “to the face of” the house of the Rechabites bowls full of wine and cups, and I said to them, “Drink wine.” 6But they answered, “We will not drink wine, for Jonadab, the son of Rechab, our ancestor,#Or “father” commanded us, saying,#Literally “to say” ‘You shall not drink wine, you or your children, forever.#Literally “until eternity” 7And you shall not build a house, and you shall not sow seed, and you shall not plant a vineyard, and it shall not be for you, but in tents you shall live all your days, so that you may live many days on the surface of the land where you are dwelling as aliens.’ 8And we obeyed the voice of Jonadab, the son of Rechab, our ancestor,#Or “father” in all that he commanded us, not to drink wine all our days, ourselves, our wives, our sons, or our daughters, 9and not to build houses for our living, and there is not vineyard, or field, or seed for us. 10But we have lived in tents, and we have obeyed, and we have done all that Jehonadab, our ancestor,#Or “father” commanded us. 11But then#Literally “And it was” at the coming up against the land of Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon, then we said, ‘Come and let us go to Jerusalem before#“from the face of” the army of the Chaldeans, and before#“from the face of” the army of the Arameans.’#Hebrew “Aramean” That is why we are living in Jerusalem.”
12And the word of Yahweh came to Jeremiah, saying,#Literally “to say” 13“Thus says Yahweh of hosts, the God of Israel: ‘Go and say to the people of Judah and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, “Can you not learn a lesson to listen to my words?” declares#Literally “a declaration of” Yahweh. 14“The words of Jonadab, the son of Rechab, that he commanded his descendants#Or “children” to not drink, have been carried out, and they have not drunk until this day, for they have obeyed the command of their ancestor.#Or “father” But I have spoken to you over and over again,#Literally “I have spoken to you doing early and speaking” and you have not listened to me. 15And I have sent to you all my servants the prophets, I have sent them over and over again,#Literally “doing early and sending” saying,#Literally “to say” ‘Turn back please each one from his evil way, and amend your deeds, and you must not go after other gods to serve them, so that you may live#Literally “and live” on the land that I gave to you and to your ancestors.’#Or “fathers” But you did not incline your ear and you did not listen to me. 16For the descendants#Or “children” of Jonadab, the son of Rechab, have carried out the command of their ancestor#Or “father” that he commanded them, but this people did not listen to me.”
17Therefore#Literally “To thus” thus says Yahweh, the God of hosts, the God of Israel, “Look, I am going to bring to Judah and to all the inhabitants of Jerusalem every disaster that I have spoken against them, because I have spoken to them and they have not listened, and I have called to them and they have not answered.” ’ ” 18But to the house of the Rechabites Jeremiah said, “Thus says Yahweh of hosts, the God of Israel, ‘Because you have listened to the command of Jonadab your ancestor,#Or “father” and you have kept all his commands, and you have done all that he commanded you,’ 19therefore#Literally “to thus” thus says Yahweh of hosts, the God of Israel: ‘A man will not be cut off for Jonadab, the son of Rechab, to stand before me#Literally “to the face of me” always.’ ”#Literally “all the days”
