Mt 27.1-2; Lk 23.1; Jn 18.28. And as soon as it was morning the chief priests, with the elders and scribes, and the whole council held a consultation; and they bound Jesus and led him away and delivered him to Pilate. 2#Mt 27.11-26; Lk 23.2-3,18-25; Jn 18.29—19.16. And Pilate asked him, “Are you the King of the Jews?” And he answered him, “You have said so.” 3And the chief priests accused him of many things. 4And Pilate again asked him, “Have you no answer to make? See how many charges they bring against you.” 5But Jesus made no further answer, so that Pilate wondered.
6Now at the feast he used to release for them one prisoner for whom they asked. 7And among the rebels in prison, who had committed murder in the insurrection, there was a man called Barabbas. 8And the crowd came up and began to ask Pilate to do as he was wont to do for them. 9And he answered them, “Do you want me to release for you the King of the Jews?” 10For he perceived that it was out of envy that the chief priests had delivered him up. 11#Acts 3.14. But the chief priests stirred up the crowd to have him release for them Barabbas instead. 12And Pilate again said to them, “Then what shall I do with the man whom you call the King of the Jews?” 13And they cried out again, “Crucify him.” 14And Pilate said to them, “Why, what evil has he done?” But they shouted all the more, “Crucify him.” 15So Pilate, wishing to satisfy the crowd, released for them Barabbas; and having scourged Jesus, he delivered him to be crucified.

Mt 27.27-31; Lk 23.11; Jn 19.2-3. And the soldiers led him away inside the palace (that is, the praetorium); and they called together the whole battalion. 17And they clothed him in a purple cloak, and plaiting a crown of thorns they put it on him. 18And they began to salute him, “Hail, King of the Jews!” 19And they struck his head with a reed, and spat upon him, and they knelt down in homage to him. 20And when they had mocked him, they stripped him of the purple cloak, and put his own clothes on him. And they led him out to crucify him.

Mt 27.32; Lk 23.26; Rom 16.13. And they compelled a passer-by, Simon of Cyrene, who was coming in from the country, the father of Alexander and Rufus, to carry his cross. 22#Mt 27.33-44; Lk 23.33-39; Jn 19.17-24. And they brought him to the place called Golgotha (which means the place of a skull). 23And they offered him wine mingled with myrrh; but he did not take it. 24#Ps 22.18. And they crucified him, and divided his garments among them, casting lots for them, to decide what each should take. 25And it was the third hour, when they crucified him. 26And the inscription of the charge against him read, “The King of the Jews.” 27And with him they crucified two robbers, one on his right and one on his left. 28#15.28 Other ancient authorities insert verse 28, And the scripture was fulfilled which says, “He was reckoned with the transgressors” 29#Mk 13.2; 14.58; Jn 2.19. And those who passed by derided him, wagging their heads, and saying, “Aha! You who would destroy the temple and build it in three days, 30save yourself, and come down from the cross!” 31#Ps 22.7-8. So also the chief priests mocked him to one another with the scribes, saying, “He saved others; he cannot save himself. 32Let the Christ, the King of Israel, come down now from the cross, that we may see and believe.” Those who were crucified with him also reviled him.

Mt 27.45-56; Lk 23.44-49; Jn 19.28-30. And when the sixth hour had come, there was darkness over the whole land#15.33 Or earth until the ninth hour. 34#Ps 22.1. And at the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, “Elo-i, Elo-i, lama sabach-thani?” which means, “My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?” 35And some of the bystanders hearing it said, “Behold, he is calling Elijah.” 36#Ps 69.21. And one ran and, filling a sponge full of vinegar, put it on a reed and gave it to him to drink, saying, “Wait, let us see whether Elijah will come to take him down.” 37And Jesus uttered a loud cry, and breathed his last. 38#Heb 10.19-20. And the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. 39#Mk 1.11; 9.7. And when the centurion, who stood facing him, saw that he thus#15.39 Other ancient authorities insert cried out and breathed his last, he said, “Truly this man was the Son#15.39 Or a son of God!”

Jn 19.25. There were also women looking on from afar, among whom were Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James the younger and of Joses, and Salome, 41#Lk 8.1-3. who, when he was in Galilee, followed him, and ministered to him; and also many other women who came up with him to Jerusalem.

Mt 27.57-61; Lk 23.50-56; Jn 19.38-42; Acts 13.29. #Deut 21.22-23. And when evening had come, since it was the day of Preparation, that is, the day before the sabbath, 43Joseph of Arimathea, a respected member of the council, who was also himself looking for the kingdom of God, took courage and went to Pilate, and asked for the body of Jesus. 44And Pilate wondered if he were already dead; and summoning the centurion, he asked him whether he was already dead.#15.44 Other ancient authorities read whether he had been some time dead 45And when he learned from the centurion that he was dead, he granted the body to Joseph. 46And he bought a linen shroud, and taking him down, wrapped him in the linen shroud, and laid him in a tomb which had been hewn out of the rock; and he rolled a stone against the door of the tomb. 47Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses saw where he was laid.

Jesus Faces Pilate
1As#Mt 27:2,11–14; Lk 23:25; Jn 18:28–38 soon as it was morning, having held a meeting with the elders,#3Jn 1 scribes,#Mt 2:4 and the whole Sanhedrin, the chief priests#Mk 13:9 tied Jesus up, led him away, and handed him over to Pilate.#1Tm 6:13
2So Pilate asked him, “Are you the king#Lk 19:38 of the Jews?”#Jn 19:21
He answered him, “You say so.”
3And the chief priests accused him of many things. 4Pilate#1Tm 6:13 questioned him again, “Aren’t you going to answer? Look how many things they are accusing you of!” 5But Jesus still did not answer, and so Pilate was amazed.
Jesus or Barabbas
6At#Mt 27:15–26; Lk 23:13–25; Jn 18:39–19:6 the festival#Mk 14:1 Pilate#1Tm 6:13 used to release for the people a prisoner whom they requested. 7There was one named Barabbas, who was in prison with rebels who had committed murder#Pr 1:16 during the rebellion.#Ac 23:7 8The crowd came up and began to ask Pilate to do for them as was his custom. 9Pilate answered them, “Do you want me to release the king#Lk 19:38 of the Jews#Jn 19:21 for you?” 10For he knew it was because of envy#Ps 37:1 that the chief priests had handed him over. 11But the chief priests stirred up the crowd so that he would release Barabbas to them instead. 12Pilate asked them again, “Then what do you want me to do with the one you call the king of the Jews?”
13Again they shouted, “Crucify him!”
14Pilate said to them, “Why? What has he done wrong?”
But they shouted all the more, “Crucify him!”
15Wanting to satisfy the crowd, Pilate released Barabbas to them; and after having Jesus flogged, he handed him over to be crucified.

Getting down on their knees,#Mk 5:6; Lk 22:41; Eph 3:14 they were paying him homage. 20After they had mocked#Mk 10:34 him, they stripped him of the purple robe and put his clothes on him.

29Those#Mt 27:39–43; Lk 23:35–38 who passed by were yelling insults#Ex 22:28; Mk 3:29; Rv 13:6 at#15:29 Or passed by blasphemed him, shaking their heads,#Ps 22:7 and saying, “Ha!
