Exodus 2
2
1Now a man from the house of Levi went and took to wife a daughter of Levi. 2#Acts 7.20; Heb 11.23. The woman conceived and bore a son; and when she saw that he was a goodly child, she hid him three months. 3And when she could hide him no longer she took for him a basket made of bulrushes, and daubed it with bitumen and pitch; and she put the child in it and placed it among the reeds at the river's brink. 4And his sister stood at a distance, to know what would be done to him. 5#Acts 7.21. Now the daughter of Pharaoh came down to bathe at the river, and her maidens walked beside the river; she saw the basket among the reeds and sent her maid to fetch it. 6When she opened it she saw the child; and lo, the babe was crying. She took pity on him and said, “This is one of the Hebrews' children.” 7Then his sister said to Pharaoh's daughter, “Shall I go and call you a nurse from the Hebrew women to nurse the child for you?” 8And Pharaoh's daughter said to her, “Go.” So the girl went and called the child's mother. 9And Pharaoh's daughter said to her, “Take this child away, and nurse him for me, and I will give you your wages.” So the woman took the child and nursed him. 10And the child grew, and she brought him to Pharaoh's daughter, and he became her son; and she named him Moses,#2.10 Heb Mosheh for she said, “Because I drew him out#2.10 Heb mashah of the water.”

Acts 7.23; Heb 11.24. One day, when Moses had grown up, he went out to his people and looked on their burdens; and he saw an Egyptian beating a Hebrew, one of his people. 12#Acts 7.24. He looked this way and that, and seeing no one he killed the Egyptian and hid him in the sand. 13When he went out the next day, behold, two Hebrews were struggling together; and he said to the man that did the wrong, “Why do you strike your fellow?” 14#Acts 7.27,28. He answered, “Who made you a prince and a judge over us? Do you mean to kill me as you killed the Egyptian?” Then Moses was afraid, and thought, “Surely the thing is known.” 15#Acts 7.29. When Pharaoh heard of it, he sought to kill Moses.
But Moses fled from Pharaoh, and stayed in the land of Midian; and he sat down by a well. 16Now the priest of Midian had seven daughters; and they came and drew water, and filled the troughs to water their father's flock. 17The shepherds came and drove them away; but Moses stood up and helped them, and watered their flock. 18When they came to their father Reuel, he said, “How is it that you have come so soon today?” 19They said, “An Egyptian delivered us out of the hand of the shepherds, and even drew water for us and watered the flock.” 20He said to his daughters, “And where is he? Why have you left the man? Call him, that he may eat bread.” 21And Moses was content to dwell with the man, and he gave Moses his daugher Zipporah. 22She bore a son, and he called his name Gershom; for he said, “I have been a sojourner#2.22 Heb ger in a foreign land.”
23In the course of those many days the king of Egypt died. And the people of Israel groaned under their bondage, and cried out for help, and their cry under bondage came up to God. 24#Acts 7.34. And God heard their groaning, and God remembered his covenant with Abraham, with Isaac, and with Jacob. 25And God saw the people of Israel, and God knew their condition.

The Birth of Moses
1During this time a man from the tribe of Levi married a woman of his own tribe, 2#Acts 7.20; Heb 11.23and she bore him a son. When she saw what a fine baby he was, she hid him for three months. 3But when she could not hide him any longer, she took a basket made of reeds and covered it with tar to make it watertight. She put the baby in it and then placed it in the tall grass at the edge of the river. 4The baby's sister stood some distance away to see what would happen to him.
5The king's daughter came down to the river to bathe, while her servants walked along the bank. Suddenly she noticed the basket in the tall grass and sent a slave woman to get it. 6The princess opened it and saw a baby boy. He was crying, and she felt sorry for him. “This is one of the Hebrew babies,” she said.
7Then his sister asked her, “Shall I go and call a Hebrew woman to act as a wet nurse?”
8“Please do,” she answered. So the girl went and brought the baby's own mother. 9The princess told the woman, “Take this baby and nurse him for me, and I will pay you.” So she took the baby and nursed him. 10#Acts 7.21Later, when the child was old enough, she took him to the king's daughter, who adopted him as her own son. She said to herself, “I pulled him out of the water, and so I name him Moses.”#2.10 Moses: This name sounds like the Hebrew for “pull out”.

Acts 7.23–28
When Moses had grown up, he went out to visit his people, the Hebrews, and he saw how they were forced to do hard labour. He even saw an Egyptian kill a Hebrew, one of Moses' own people. 12Moses looked all round, and when he saw that no one was watching, he killed the Egyptian and hid his body in the sand. 13The next day he went back and saw two Hebrew men fighting. He said to the one who was in the wrong, “Why are you beating up a fellow-Hebrew?”
14The man answered, “Who made you our ruler and judge? Are you going to kill me just as you killed that Egyptian?” Then Moses was afraid and said to himself, “People have found out what I have done.” 15-16#Acts 7.29; Heb 11.27When the king heard about what had happened, he tried to have Moses killed, but Moses fled and went to live in the land of Midian.
One day, when Moses was sitting by a well, seven daughters of Jethro, the priest of Midian, came to draw water and fill the troughs for their father's sheep and goats. 17But some shepherds drove Jethro's daughters away. Then Moses went to their rescue and watered their animals for them. 18When they returned to their father, he asked, “Why have you come back so early today?”
19“An Egyptian rescued us from the shepherds,” they answered, “and he even drew water for us and watered our animals.”
20“Where is he?” he asked his daughters. “Why did you leave the man out there? Go and invite him to eat with us.”
21So Moses agreed to live there, and Jethro gave him his daughter Zipporah in marriage, 22who bore him a son. Moses said to himself, “I am a foreigner in this land, and so I name him Gershom.”#2.22 Gershom: This name sounds like the Hebrew for “foreigner”.
23Years later the king of Egypt died, but the Israelites were still groaning under their slavery and cried out for help. Their cry went up to God, 24#Gen 15.13–14who heard their groaning and remembered his covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. 25He saw the slavery of the Israelites and was concerned for them.#2.25 was concerned for them; one ancient translation revealed himself to them.
