Mark 14

The Plot to Kill Jesus
1It was two days before the Passover and the festival of Unleavened Bread. The chief priests and the scribes were looking for a way to arrest Jesus#14.1 Gk him by stealth and kill him; 2for they said, “Not during the festival, or there may be a riot among the people.”
The Anointing at Bethany
3While he was at Bethany in the house of Simon the leper,#14.3 The terms leper and leprosy can refer to several diseases as he sat at the table, a woman came with an alabaster jar of very costly ointment of nard, and she broke open the jar and poured the ointment on his head. 4But some were there who said to one another in anger, “Why was the ointment wasted in this way? 5For this ointment could have been sold for more than three hundred denarii,#14.5 The denarius was the usual day's wage for a laborer and the money given to the poor.” And they scolded her. 6But Jesus said, “Let her alone; why do you trouble her? She has performed a good service for me. 7For you always have the poor with you, and you can show kindness to them whenever you wish; but you will not always have me. 8She has done what she could; she has anointed my body beforehand for its burial. 9Truly I tell you, wherever the good news#14.9 Or gospel is proclaimed in the whole world, what she has done will be told in remembrance of her.”
Judas Agrees to Betray Jesus
10Then Judas Iscariot, who was one of the twelve, went to the chief priests in order to betray him to them. 11When they heard it, they were greatly pleased, and promised to give him money. So he began to look for an opportunity to betray him.
The Passover with the Disciples
12On the first day of Unleavened Bread, when the Passover lamb is sacrificed, his disciples said to him, “Where do you want us to go and make the preparations for you to eat the Passover?” 13So he sent two of his disciples, saying to them, “Go into the city, and a man carrying a jar of water will meet you; follow him, 14and wherever he enters, say to the owner of the house, ‘The Teacher asks, Where is my guest room where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?’ 15He will show you a large room upstairs, furnished and ready. Make preparations for us there.” 16So the disciples set out and went to the city, and found everything as he had told them; and they prepared the Passover meal.
17When it was evening, he came with the twelve. 18And when they had taken their places and were eating, Jesus said, “Truly I tell you, one of you will betray me, one who is eating with me.” 19They began to be distressed and to say to him one after another, “Surely, not I?” 20He said to them, “It is one of the twelve, one who is dipping bread#14.20 Gk lacks bread into the bowl#14.20 Other ancient authorities read same bowl with me. 21For the Son of Man goes as it is written of him, but woe to that one by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been better for that one not to have been born.”
The Institution of the Lord's Supper
22While they were eating, he took a loaf of bread, and after blessing it he broke it, gave it to them, and said, “Take; this is my body.” 23Then he took a cup, and after giving thanks he gave it to them, and all of them drank from it. 24He said to them, “This is my blood of the#14.24 Other ancient authorities add new covenant, which is poured out for many. 25Truly I tell you, I will never again drink of the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God.”
Peter's Denial Foretold
26When they had sung the hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives. 27And Jesus said to them, “You will all become deserters; for it is written,
‘I will strike the shepherd,
and the sheep will be scattered.’
28But after I am raised up, I will go before you to Galilee.” 29Peter said to him, “Even though all become deserters, I will not.” 30Jesus said to him, “Truly I tell you, this day, this very night, before the cock crows twice, you will deny me three times.” 31But he said vehemently, “Even though I must die with you, I will not deny you.” And all of them said the same.
Jesus Prays in Gethsemane
32They went to a place called Gethsemane; and he said to his disciples, “Sit here while I pray.” 33He took with him Peter and James and John, and began to be distressed and agitated. 34And he said to them, “I am deeply grieved, even to death; remain here, and keep awake.” 35And going a little farther, he threw himself on the ground and prayed that, if it were possible, the hour might pass from him. 36He said, “Abba,#14.36 Aramaic for Father Father, for you all things are possible; remove this cup from me; yet, not what I want, but what you want.” 37He came and found them sleeping; and he said to Peter, “Simon, are you asleep? Could you not keep awake one hour? 38Keep awake and pray that you may not come into the time of trial;#14.38 Or into temptation the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.” 39And again he went away and prayed, saying the same words. 40And once more he came and found them sleeping, for their eyes were very heavy; and they did not know what to say to him. 41He came a third time and said to them, “Are you still sleeping and taking your rest? Enough! The hour has come; the Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. 42Get up, let us be going. See, my betrayer is at hand.”
The Betrayal and Arrest of Jesus
43Immediately, while he was still speaking, Judas, one of the twelve, arrived; and with him there was a crowd with swords and clubs, from the chief priests, the scribes, and the elders. 44Now the betrayer had given them a sign, saying, “The one I will kiss is the man; arrest him and lead him away under guard.” 45So when he came, he went up to him at once and said, “Rabbi!” and kissed him. 46Then they laid hands on him and arrested him. 47But one of those who stood near drew his sword and struck the slave of the high priest, cutting off his ear. 48Then Jesus said to them, “Have you come out with swords and clubs to arrest me as though I were a bandit? 49Day after day I was with you in the temple teaching, and you did not arrest me. But let the scriptures be fulfilled.” 50All of them deserted him and fled.
51A certain young man was following him, wearing nothing but a linen cloth. They caught hold of him, 52but he left the linen cloth and ran off naked.
Jesus before the Council
53They took Jesus to the high priest; and all the chief priests, the elders, and the scribes were assembled. 54Peter had followed him at a distance, right into the courtyard of the high priest; and he was sitting with the guards, warming himself at the fire. 55Now the chief priests and the whole council were looking for testimony against Jesus to put him to death; but they found none. 56For many gave false testimony against him, and their testimony did not agree. 57Some stood up and gave false testimony against him, saying, 58“We heard him say, ‘I will destroy this temple that is made with hands, and in three days I will build another, not made with hands.’ ” 59But even on this point their testimony did not agree. 60Then the high priest stood up before them and asked Jesus, “Have you no answer? What is it that they testify against you?” 61But he was silent and did not answer. Again the high priest asked him, “Are you the Messiah,#14.61 Or the Christ the Son of the Blessed One?” 62Jesus said, “I am; and
‘you will see the Son of Man
seated at the right hand of the Power,’
and ‘coming with the clouds of heaven.’ ”
63Then the high priest tore his clothes and said, “Why do we still need witnesses? 64You have heard his blasphemy! What is your decision?” All of them condemned him as deserving death. 65Some began to spit on him, to blindfold him, and to strike him, saying to him, “Prophesy!” The guards also took him over and beat him.
Peter Denies Jesus
66While Peter was below in the courtyard, one of the servant-girls of the high priest came by. 67When she saw Peter warming himself, she stared at him and said, “You also were with Jesus, the man from Nazareth.” 68But he denied it, saying, “I do not know or understand what you are talking about.” And he went out into the forecourt.#14.68 Or gateway Then the cock crowed.#14.68 Other ancient authorities lack Then the cock crowed 69And the servant-girl, on seeing him, began again to say to the bystanders, “This man is one of them.” 70But again he denied it. Then after a little while the bystanders again said to Peter, “Certainly you are one of them; for you are a Galilean.” 71But he began to curse, and he swore an oath, “I do not know this man you are talking about.” 72At that moment the cock crowed for the second time. Then Peter remembered that Jesus had said to him, “Before the cock crows twice, you will deny me three times.” And he broke down and wept.

The Anointing at Bethany
3#Matt. 26:6; Luke 7:37; John 12:1, 3And being in Bethany at the house of Simon the leper, as He sat at the table, a woman came having an alabaster flask of very costly oil of spikenard. Then she broke the flask and poured it on His head. 4But there were some who were indignant among themselves, and said, “Why was this fragrant oil wasted? 5For it might have been sold for more than three hundred #Matt. 18:28; Mark 12:15denarii and given to the poor.” And they #Matt. 20:11; John 6:61criticized her sharply.
6But Jesus said, “Let her alone. Why do you trouble her? She has done a good work for Me. 7#Deut. 15:11; Matt. 26:11; John 12:8For you have the poor with you always, and whenever you wish you may do them good; #(John 7:33; 8:21; 14:2, 12; 16:10, 17, 28)but Me you do not have always. 8She has done what she could. She has come beforehand to anoint My body for burial. 9Assuredly, I say to you, wherever this gospel is #Matt. 28:19, 20; Mark 16:15; Luke 24:47preached in the whole world, what this woman has done will also be told as a memorial to her.”

Jesus Celebrates the Passover with His Disciples
12#Ex. 12:8; Matt. 26:17–19; Luke 22:7–13Now on the first day of Unleavened Bread, when they killed the Passover lamb, His disciples said to Him, “Where do You want us to go and prepare, that You may eat the Passover?”
13And He sent out two of His disciples and said to them, “Go into the city, and a man will meet you carrying a pitcher of water; follow him. 14Wherever he goes in, say to the master of the house, ‘The Teacher says, “Where is the guest room in which I may eat the Passover with My disciples?” ’ 15Then he will show you a large upper room, furnished and prepared; there make ready for us.”
16So His disciples went out, and came into the city, and found it just as He had said to them; and they prepared the Passover.
17#Matt. 26:20–24; Luke 22:14, 21–23In the evening He came with the twelve. 18Now as they sat and ate, Jesus said, “Assuredly, I say to you, #Ps. 41:9; Matt. 26:46; Mark 14:42; John 6:70, 71; 13:18one of you who eats with Me will betray Me.”
19And they began to be sorrowful, and to say to Him one by one, “Is it I?” And another said, “Is it I?”
20He answered and said to them, “It is one of the twelve, who dips with Me in the dish. 21#Matt. 26:24; Luke 22:22; Acts 1:16–20The Son of Man indeed goes just as it is written of Him, but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been good for that man if he had never been born.”
Jesus Institutes the Lord’s Supper
22#Matt. 26:26–29; Luke 22:17–20; 1 Cor. 11:23–25And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to them and said, “Take, eat; this is My #(1 Pet. 2:24)body.”
23Then He took the cup, and when He had given thanks He gave it to them, and they all drank from it. 24And He said to them, “This is My blood of the new covenant, which is shed for many. 25Assuredly, I say to you, I will no longer drink of the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God.”
26#Matt. 26:30And when they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.
Jesus Predicts Peter’s Denial
27#Matt. 26:31–35; Mark 14:50; John 16:32Then Jesus said to them, “All of you will be made to stumble because of Me this night, for it is written:
#(Is. 53:5, 10); Zech. 13:7‘I will strike the Shepherd,
And the sheep will be scattered.’
28“But #Matt. 28:16; Mark 16:7; John 21:1after I have been raised, I will go before you to Galilee.”
29#Matt. 26:33, 34; Luke 22:33, 34; John 13:37, 38Peter said to Him, “Even if all are made to stumble, yet I will not be.”
30Jesus said to him, “Assuredly, I say to you that today, even this night, before the rooster crows twice, you will deny Me three times.”
31But he spoke more vehemently, “If I have to die with You, I will not deny You!”
And they all said likewise.
The Prayer in the Garden
32#Matt. 26:36–46; Luke 22:40–46; John 18:1Then they came to a place which was named Gethsemane; and He said to His disciples, “Sit here while I pray.” 33And He #Mark 5:37; 9:2; 13:3took Peter, James, and John with Him, and He began to be troubled and deeply distressed. 34Then He said to them, #Is. 53:3, 4; Matt. 26:38; John 12:27“My soul is exceedingly sorrowful, even to death. Stay here and watch.”
35He went a little farther, and fell on the ground, and prayed that if it were possible, the hour might pass from Him. 36And He said, #Rom. 8:15; Gal. 4:6“Abba, Father, #(Heb. 5:7)all things are possible for You. Take this cup away from Me; #Is. 50:5; John 5:30; 6:38nevertheless, not what I will, but what You will.”
37Then He came and found them sleeping, and said to Peter, “Simon, are you sleeping? Could you not watch one hour? 38#Luke 21:36Watch and pray, lest you enter into temptation. #(Rom. 7:18, 21–24; Gal. 5:17)The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.”
39Again He went away and prayed, and spoke the same words. 40And when He returned, He found them asleep again, for their eyes were heavy; and they did not know what to answer Him.
41Then He came the third time and said to them, “Are you still sleeping and resting? It is enough! #John 13:1; 17:1The hour has come; behold, the Son of Man is being betrayed into the hands of sinners. 42#Matt. 26:46; Mark 14:18; Luke 9:44; John 13:21; 18:1, 2Rise, let us be going. See, My betrayer is at hand.”
Betrayal and Arrest in Gethsemane
43#Ps. 3:1; Matt. 26:47–56; Luke 22:47–53; John 18:3–11And immediately, while He was still speaking, Judas, one of the twelve, with a great multitude with swords and clubs, came from the chief priests and the scribes and the elders. 44Now His betrayer had given them a signal, saying, “Whomever I #(Prov. 27:6)kiss, He is the One; seize Him and lead Him away safely.”
45As soon as he had come, immediately he went up to Him and said to Him, “Rabbi, Rabbi!” and kissed Him.
46Then they laid their hands on Him and took Him. 47And one of those who stood by drew his sword and struck the servant of the high priest, and cut off his ear.
48#Matt. 26:55; Luke 22:52Then Jesus answered and said to them, “Have you come out, as against a robber, with swords and clubs to take Me? 49I was daily with you in the temple #Matt. 21:23teaching, and you did not seize Me. But #Ps. 22:6; Is. 53:7; Luke 22:37; 24:44the Scriptures must be fulfilled.”

53#Matt. 26:57–68; Mark 10:33; Luke 22:54; John 18:12, 13, 19–24And they led Jesus away to the high priest; and with him were #Mark 15:1assembled all the #Matt. 16:21; 27:12; Luke 9:22; 23:23; John 7:32; 18:3; 19:6chief priests, the elders, and the scribes. 54But #John 18:15Peter followed Him at a distance, right into the courtyard of the high priest. And he sat with the servants and warmed himself at the fire.
55#Matt. 26:59Now the chief priests and all the council sought testimony against Jesus to put Him to death, but found none. 56For many bore #Ex. 20:16; Ps. 27:12; 35:11; Prov. 6:16–19; 19:5false witness against Him, but their testimonies did not agree.
57Then some rose up and bore false witness against Him, saying, 58“We heard Him say, #Matt. 26:61; Mark 15:29; John 2:19; (2 Cor. 5:1)‘I will destroy this temple made with hands, and within three days I will build another made without hands.’ ” 59But not even then did their testimony agree.
60#Matt. 26:62; Mark 15:3–5And the high priest stood up in the midst and asked Jesus, saying, “Do You answer nothing? What is it these men testify against You?” 61But #Is. 53:7; John 19:9; Acts 8:32; (1 Pet. 2:23)He kept silent and answered nothing.
#Matt. 26:63; Luke 22:67–71Again the high priest asked Him, saying to Him, “Are You the Christ, the Son of the Blessed?”
62Jesus said, “I am. #Matt. 24:30; 26:64; Luke 22:69And you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Power, and coming with the clouds of heaven.”
63Then the high priest tore his clothes and said, “What further need do we have of witnesses? 64You have heard the #John 10:33, 36blasphemy! What do you think?”
And they all condemned Him to be deserving of #Matt. 20:18; Mark 10:33; John 19:7death.
65Then some began to #Job 16:10; Is. 50:6; 52:14; Lam. 3:30; Mark 10:34; Luke 18:32spit on Him, and to blindfold Him, and to beat Him, and to say to Him, “Prophesy!” And the officers struck Him with the palms of their hands.
Peter Denies Jesus, and Weeps
66#Matt. 26:58, 69–75; Luke 22:55–62; John 18:16–18, 25–27Now as Peter was below in the courtyard, one of the servant girls of the high priest came. 67And when she saw Peter warming himself, she looked at him and said, “You also were with #Mark 10:47; John 1:45; Acts 10:38Jesus of Nazareth.”
68But he denied it, saying, “I neither know nor understand what you are saying.” And he went out on the porch, and a rooster crowed.
69#Matt. 26:71; Luke 22:58; John 18:25And the servant girl saw him again, and began to say to those who stood by, “This is one of them.” 70But he denied it again.
#Matt. 26:73; Luke 22:59; John 18:26And a little later those who stood by said to Peter again, “Surely you are one of them; #Acts 2:7for you are a Galilean, and your speech shows it.”
71Then he began to curse and swear, “I do not know this Man of whom you speak!”
72#Matt. 26:75; Mark 14:30; Luke 22:34; John 13:38A second time the rooster crowed. Then Peter called to mind the word that Jesus had said to him, “Before the rooster crows twice, you will deny Me three times.” And when he thought about it, he wept.
