Job 41
41
1 # 41.1 Ch 40.25 in Heb “Can you draw out Leviathan#41.1 Or the crocodile with a fishhook,
or press down its tongue with a cord?
2Can you put a rope in its nose,
or pierce its jaw with a hook?
3Will it make many supplications to you?
Will it speak soft words to you?
4Will it make a covenant with you
to be taken as your servant forever?
5Will you play with it as with a bird,
or will you put it on leash for your girls?
6Will traders bargain over it?
Will they divide it up among the merchants?
7Can you fill its skin with harpoons,
or its head with fishing spears?
8Lay hands on it;
think of the battle; you will not do it again!
9 # 41.9 Ch 41.1 in Heb Any hope of capturing it#41.9 Heb of it will be disappointed;
were not even the gods#41.9 Cn Compare Symmachus Syr: Heb one is overwhelmed at the sight of it?
10No one is so fierce as to dare to stir it up.
Who can stand before it?#41.10 Heb me
11Who can confront it#41.11 Heb me and be safe?#41.11 Gk: Heb that I shall repay
—under the whole heaven, who?#41.11 Heb to me
12“I will not keep silence concerning its limbs,
or its mighty strength, or its splendid frame.
13Who can strip off its outer garment?
Who can penetrate its double coat of mail?#41.13 Gk: Heb bridle
14Who can open the doors of its face?
There is terror all around its teeth.
15Its back#41.15 Cn Compare Gk Vg: Heb pride is made of shields in rows,
shut up closely as with a seal.
16One is so near to another
that no air can come between them.
17They are joined one to another;
they clasp each other and cannot be separated.
18Its sneezes flash forth light,
and its eyes are like the eyelids of the dawn.
19From its mouth go flaming torches;
sparks of fire leap out.
20Out of its nostrils comes smoke,
as from a boiling pot and burning rushes.
21Its breath kindles coals,
and a flame comes out of its mouth.
22In its neck abides strength,
and terror dances before it.
23The folds of its flesh cling together;
it is firmly cast and immovable.
24Its heart is as hard as stone,
as hard as the lower millstone.
25When it raises itself up the gods are afraid;
at the crashing they are beside themselves.
26Though the sword reaches it, it does not avail,
nor does the spear, the dart, or the javelin.
27It counts iron as straw,
and bronze as rotten wood.
28The arrow cannot make it flee;
slingstones, for it, are turned to chaff.
29Clubs are counted as chaff;
it laughs at the rattle of javelins.
30Its underparts are like sharp potsherds;
it spreads itself like a threshing sledge on the mire.
31It makes the deep boil like a pot;
it makes the sea like a pot of ointment.
32It leaves a shining wake behind it;
one would think the deep to be white-haired.
33On earth it has no equal,
a creature without fear.
34It surveys everything that is lofty;
it is king over all that are proud.”

Job 41
41
1“Can you catch Leviathan#41:1 Leviathan This animal might be a crocodile or a giant sea monster. with a fishhook?
Can you tie his tongue with a rope?
2Can you put a rope through his nose
or a hook through his jaw?
3Will he beg you to let him go free?
Will he speak to you with gentle words?
4Will he make an agreement with you
and promise to serve you forever?
5Will you play with Leviathan as you would play with a bird?
Will you put a rope on him so that your girls can play with him?
6Will fishermen try to buy him from you?
Will they cut him into pieces and sell him to the merchants?
7Can you throw spears into his skin or head?
8“If you ever lay a hand on Leviathan, you will never do it again!
Just think about the battle that would be!
9Do you think you can defeat him?
Well, forget it! There is no hope.
Just looking at him will scare you!
10No one is brave enough to wake him up
and make him angry.
“Well, no one can challenge me either!#41:10 Well, no one … either Or “No one can stand and fight him.”
11I owe nothing to anyone.
Everything under heaven belongs to me.#41:11 Or “No one has come near to Leviathan and survived—no one under heaven!”
12“I will tell you about Leviathan’s legs,
his strength, and his graceful shape.
13No one can pierce his skin.
It is like armor!#41:13 It is like armor Or “No one can approach him with a bridle.”
14No one can force him to open his jaws.
The teeth in his mouth scare people.
15His back has rows of shields
tightly sealed together.
16They are so close to each other
that no air can pass between them.
17The shields are joined to each other.
They hold together so tightly that they cannot be pulled apart.
18When Leviathan sneezes, it is like lightning flashing out.
His eyes shine like the light of dawn.
19Burning torches come from his mouth.
Sparks of fire shoot out.
20Smoke pours from his nose
like burning weeds under a boiling pot.
21His breath sets coals on fire,
and flames shoot from his mouth.
22His neck is very powerful.
People are afraid and run away from him.
23There is no soft spot in his skin.
It is as hard as iron.
24His heart is like a rock; he has no fear.
It is as hard as a millstone.
25When he gets up, even the strongest people#41:25 strongest people Or “gods.” are afraid.
They run away when he swings his tail.
26Swords, spears, and darts only bounce off when they hit him.
These weapons don’t hurt him at all!
27He breaks iron as easily as straw.
He breaks bronze like rotten wood.
28Arrows don’t make him run away.
Rocks thrown at him seem as light as chaff.
29When a wood club hits him, it feels to him like a piece of straw.
He laughs when anyone throws a spear at him.
30The skin on his belly is like sharp pieces of broken pottery.
He leaves tracks in the mud like a threshing board.
31He stirs up the water like a boiling pot.
He makes it bubble like a pot of boiling oil.
32When he swims, he leaves a sparkling path behind him.
He stirs up the water and makes it white with foam.
33No animal on earth is like him.
He is an animal made without fear.
34He looks down on the proudest of creatures.
He is king over all the wild animals.”
