Psalms 80
80
For the music director. A psalm of Asaph. To the tune “Lilies of the Covenant.”
1Please hear us, Shepherd of Israel, you who lead the descendants of Joseph like a flock. You who sit on your throne above the cherubim, shine out
2in the presence of Ephraim, Benjamin, and Manasseh. Gather together your power and come to save us!
3God, please restore us! Let your face shine on us so we can be saved.
4Lord God Almighty, how long will you be angry with the prayers of your people?
5You fed them with the bread of tears, and gave them a full bowl#80:5. Literally, “full measure.” of tears to drink.
6You turn us into victims our neighbors fight over; our enemies mock us.
7God Almighty, please restore us! Let your face shine on us so we can be saved!
8You carried us out of Egypt like a vine. You drove out the heathen nations, and then you planted the vine.
9You prepared the ground for the vine. It took root and filled the land.
10The mountains were covered by its shade; its branches covered the great cedars.
11It sent its branches as far west as the Mediterranean Sea, and its shoots as far east as the Euphrates River.
12So why have you broken down the walls that protect it#80:12 “That protect it”: implied. so that everyone who passes by can steal its fruit?
13Wild pigs from the forest eat it, wild animals feed on it.
14God Almighty, please return to us! Look down from heaven and see what's happening to us! Come and care for this vine
15that you planted yourself, this son that you brought up yourself.
16We, your vine, have been chopped down and burned. May those who did this#80:16. Implied. die when you glare at them.
17Protect the man who stands beside you; strengthen the son you have chosen.
18Then we will not turn away from you. Revive us so we can pray to you.#80:18. Literally, “call on your name.”
19Lord God Almighty, please restore us! Let your face shine on us so we can be saved.

Psalms 80

Psalm 80
For the choir director; according to shoshannim eduth; by Asaph; a psalm.
1Open your ears, O Shepherd of Israel,
the one who leads ⌞the descendants of⌟ Joseph like sheep,
the one who is enthroned over the angels.#80:1 Or “cherubim.”
2Appear in front of Ephraim, Benjamin, and Manasseh.
Wake up your power, and come to save us.
3O God, restore us and smile on us
so that we may be saved.
4O Lord God, commander of armies, how long will you smolder in anger
against the prayer of your people?
5You made them eat tears as food.
You often made them drink ⌞their own⌟ tears.
6You made us a source of conflict to our neighbors,
and our enemies made fun of us.
7O God, commander of armies, restore us and smile on us
so that we may be saved.
8You brought a vine from Egypt.
You forced out the nations and planted it.
9You cleared the ground for it
so that it took root and filled the land.
10Its shade covered the mountains.
Its branches covered the mighty cedars.
11It reached out with its branches to the Mediterranean Sea.
Its shoots reached the Euphrates River.
12Why did you break down the stone fences around this vine?
All who pass by are picking its fruit.
13Wild boars from the forest graze on it.
Wild animals devour it.
14O God, commander of armies, come back!
Look from heaven and see!
Come to help this vine.
15Take care of what your right hand planted,
the son you strengthened for yourself.
16The vine has been cut down and burned.
Let them be destroyed by the threatening look on your face.
17Let your power rest on the man you have chosen,
the son of man you strengthened for yourself.
18Then we will never turn away from you.
Give us life again, and we will call on you.
19O Lord God, commander of armies, restore us, and smile on us
so that we may be saved.
