Psalms 50
50
A psalm of Asaph.
1The Lord, the Almighty God, speaks! He summons everyone on earth, from the east to the west.
2God shines out of Mount Zion, perfect in beauty.
3Our God arrives, and does not stay quiet. Fire flames before him, burning everything up; a violent storm rages around him.
4He summons the heavens above and the earth to witness the judgment of his people.
5“Bring me those who trust in me—those who confirmed the agreement#50:5. Literally, “covenant,” also verse 16. with me through sacrifice.”
6The heavens declare his decisions are right, for God himself is the judge. Selah.
7“My people, listen to what I have to say. I am bringing charges against you, Israel. I am God, your God!
8I'm not complaining about your sacrifices or burnt offerings that you offer all the time.
9I do not require bulls from your barns or goats from your pens,
10for I own all the animals of the forest, and the cattle on a thousand hills belong to me.
11I know every bird of the mountains; all living things in the fields are mine.
12If I were hungry, I wouldn't tell you, for the earth and everything in it are mine.
13Do I eat the flesh of bulls or drink the blood of goats?
14Give an offering of thanks to God; keep the promises you made to the Most High,
15and call on me when you're in trouble. I will rescue you, and you will thank me.”
16But to the wicked God says, “What's the point of mechanically repeating my laws or making empty promises about obeying the agreement?
17You hate my discipline,#50:17. Or “teaching.” and you toss my words away, leaving them behind you.
18When you see people stealing, you admire them; you associate with adulterers.
19With your mouth you say evil things; you use your tongue to spread lies.
20You sit there and speak against your brother, slandering your own mother's son.
21I kept quiet when you did these things. You thought I was someone just like you. But now I confront you, and bring my charges against you.
22Think again, you people who dismiss God, or I will tear you apart, and no one will be able to save you.
23But those who give an offering of thanks honor me, and to those who follow the right I will show them the salvation of God.”

Psalm 50
A psalm by Asaph.
1The Lord, the only true God, has spoken.
He has summoned the earth
from where the sun rises to where it sets.
2God shines from Zion,
the perfection of beauty.
3Our God will come and will not remain silent.
A devouring fire is in front of him
and a raging storm around him.
4He summons heaven and earth to judge his people:
5“Gather around me, my godly people
who have made a pledge to me through sacrifices.”
6The heavens announce his righteousness
because God is the judge. Selah
7“Listen, my people, and I will speak.
Listen, Israel, and I will testify against you:
I am God, your God!
8I am not criticizing you for your sacrifices or burnt offerings,
which are always in front of me.
9 ⌞But⌟ I will not accept ⌞another⌟ young bull from your household
or a single male goat from your pens.
10Every creature in the forest,
⌞even⌟ the cattle on a thousand hills, is mine.
11I know every bird in the mountains.
Everything that moves in the fields is mine.
12If I were hungry, I would not tell you,
because the world and all that it contains are mine.
13Do I eat the meat of bulls or drink the blood of goats?
14Bring ⌞your⌟ thanks to God as a sacrifice,
and keep your vows to the Most High.
15Call on me in times of trouble.
I will rescue you, and you will honor me.”
16But God says to wicked people,
“How dare you quote my decrees
and mouth my promises! #50:16 Or “covenant.”
17You hate discipline.
You toss my words behind you.
18When you see a thief, you want to make friends with him.
You keep company with people who commit adultery.
19You let your mouth say anything evil.
Your tongue plans deceit.
20You sit and talk against your own brother.
You slander your own mother’s son.
21When you did these things, I remained silent.
⌞That⌟ made you think I was like you.
I will argue my point with you
and lay it all out for you to see.
22Consider this, you people who forget God.
Otherwise, I will tear you to pieces,
and there will be no one left to rescue you.
23Whoever offers thanks as a sacrifice honors me.
I will let everyone who continues in my way
see the salvation that comes from God.”
