Psalms 4
4
For the music director. A psalm of David, to be accompanied by string instruments.
1When I call, please answer me, God who vindicates me. When I was hemmed in by troubles, you gave me a way out. Be gracious to me and hear my prayer.
2How long will you people ruin my reputation? How long will you love what is worthless and tell lies? Selah.
3You should realize that the Lord shows special favor to the faithful. The Lord listens when I call to him.
4Be in awe;#4:4. Some translate this word as “anger,” but the sense of this verse is to realize God's abilities and consequently to turn away from sinful actions. do not sin. When you rest, reflect on this, and keep quiet! Selah.
5Offer sacrifices with the right attitude. Trust in the Lord.
6Many say, “Who is going to show us some good?” Lord, may your face shine upon us.#4:6. See Numbers 6:26.
7The happiness you give me is better than those who have a plentiful harvest of grain and new wine.
8I will lie down in peace and sleep, for you, Lord, alone keep me safe.#4:8. Alternatively: “for you Lord keep me safe, even being alone.”

Psalm 4
For the choir director; with stringed instruments; a psalm by David.
1Answer me when I call, O God of my righteousness.
You have freed me from my troubles.
Have pity on me, and hear my prayer!
2You important people,
how long are you going to insult my honor?
How long are you going to love what is empty
and seek what is a lie? Selah
3Know that the Lord singles out godly people for himself.
The Lord hears me when I call to him.
4Tremble and do not sin.
Think about this on your bed and remain quiet. Selah
5Offer the sacrifices of righteousness
by trusting the Lord.
6Many are saying, “Who can show us anything good?”
Let the light of your presence shine on us, O Lord.
7You put more joy in my heart
than when their grain and new wine increase.
8I fall asleep in peace the moment I lie down
because you alone, O Lord, enable me to live securely.
