Mark 11
11
1As they approached Jerusalem, near to Bethphage and Bethany, beside the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two of his disciples on ahead. 2He told them, “Go into the village ahead of you, and as soon as you enter, you'll find a colt tied up that no one has ever ridden before. Untie it and bring it here. 3If anyone asks you what you are doing, tell them, ‘The Lord needs it and will send it back soon.’”
4So they set off, and found a colt tied to a door, out on the street, and they untied it. 5Some of the people standing around asked, “What are you doing, untying that colt”? 6The disciples replied just as Jesus told them to, and the people let them go.
7They brought the colt to Jesus, put their cloaks on it, and Jesus sat on it. 8Many people spread their cloaks on the road, while others laid down leafy branches that they'd cut in the fields.
9Those leading in the front and those that were following were all shouting, “Hosanna!#11:9. “Hosanna!” This is simply a transliteration of the Aramaic word meaning “Save!” Bless the one coming in the name of the Lord. 10Bless the kingdom of our father David that is coming! Hosanna in the highest!”#11:10. Quoting Psalms 118:26.
11Jesus entered Jerusalem and went in to the Temple. He looked around him, observing everything, and then, since it was getting late, he returned to Bethany with the twelve disciples.
12The next day, as they left Bethany, Jesus was hungry. 13From some distance away he saw a fig tree with leaves, so he went over to it to see if it had any fruit. But when he got there, he found it had only leaves, because it was not the season for figs.
14He said to the tree, “May no one eat fruit from you ever again.” His disciples heard his words.
15They arrived back in Jerusalem, and Jesus went into the Temple. He started driving out the people who were buying and selling in the Temple. He overturned the tables of the money-changers and the chairs of the people selling doves. 16He stopped anyone carrying things through the Temple.
17He explained to them, “Doesn't Scripture say, ‘My house will be called a house of prayer for all nations’?#11:17. Quoting Isaiah 56:7. But you have turned it into a den of thieves!”#11:17. Quoting Jeremiah 7:11.
18The chief priests and religious teachers heard what had happened, and tried to find a way to kill Jesus. But they were afraid of him, for everyone was so impressed by his teaching.
19When evening came Jesus and his disciples left the city. 20The following morning as they returned, they saw the fig tree, withered from the roots up. 21Peter remembered what Jesus had done, and said to him, “Rabbi, look, the fig tree that you cursed has withered.”
22“Trust in God,” Jesus replied. 23“Believe me when I say to you that if you told this mountain, ‘Get out of here and be thrown into the sea,’ and you don't doubt in your heart, but are convinced about what you're asking, then it will happen! 24I'm telling you that whatever you pray for, whatever you ask, trust that you've received it, and it's yours. 25But when you're praying, if you have something against someone, forgive them, so that your Father in heaven may also forgive you your sins.” 26#11:26. The earliest manuscripts do not contain verse 26, which is inserted from Matthew 6:15.
27They returned to Jerusalem, and as he was walking in the Temple, the chief priests, religious teachers, and the leaders approached him. 28“By what authority are you doing all this?” they demanded. “Who gave you the right?”
29“Let me ask you a question,” Jesus told them. “You answer me, and I'll tell you by whose authority I do these things. 30John's baptism—did that come from heaven, or from people?”
31They discussed it among themselves. They said, “If we say it's from heaven, he'll reply, ‘So why didn't you believe him?’ 32But if we say, it's of human origin, well…” They were afraid of the crowd, because everyone believed that John was a true prophet.
33So they answered Jesus, “We don't know.”
“Then I'm not telling you by whose authority I do these things,” replied Jesus.

Mark 11
11
Jesus Comes to Jerusalem as King
1As they approached Jerusalem and came to Bethphage and Bethany at the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two of his disciples, 2saying to them, “Go to the village ahead of you, and just as you enter it, you will find a colt tied there, which no one has ever ridden. Untie it and bring it here. 3If anyone asks you, ‘Why are you doing this?’ say, ‘The Lord needs it and will send it back here shortly.’ ”
4They went and found a colt outside in the street, tied at a doorway. As they untied it, 5some people standing there asked, “What are you doing, untying that colt?” 6They answered as Jesus had told them to, and the people let them go. 7When they brought the colt to Jesus and threw their cloaks over it, he sat on it. 8Many people spread their cloaks on the road, while others spread branches they had cut in the fields. 9Those who went ahead and those who followed shouted,
“Hosanna!#11:9 A Hebrew expression meaning “Save!” which became an exclamation of praise; also in verse 10”
“Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!”#11:9 Psalm 118:25,26
10“Blessed is the coming kingdom of our father David!”
“Hosanna in the highest heaven!”
11Jesus entered Jerusalem and went into the temple courts. He looked around at everything, but since it was already late, he went out to Bethany with the Twelve.
Jesus Curses a Fig Tree and Clears the Temple Courts
12The next day as they were leaving Bethany, Jesus was hungry. 13Seeing in the distance a fig tree in leaf, he went to find out if it had any fruit. When he reached it, he found nothing but leaves, because it was not the season for figs. 14Then he said to the tree, “May no one ever eat fruit from you again.” And his disciples heard him say it.
15On reaching Jerusalem, Jesus entered the temple courts and began driving out those who were buying and selling there. He overturned the tables of the money changers and the benches of those selling doves, 16and would not allow anyone to carry merchandise through the temple courts. 17And as he taught them, he said, “Is it not written: ‘My house will be called a house of prayer for all nations’#11:17 Isaiah 56:7? But you have made it ‘a den of robbers.’#11:17 Jer. 7:11”
18The chief priests and the teachers of the law heard this and began looking for a way to kill him, for they feared him, because the whole crowd was amazed at his teaching.
19When evening came, Jesus and his disciples#11:19 Some early manuscripts came, Jesus went out of the city.
20In the morning, as they went along, they saw the fig tree withered from the roots. 21Peter remembered and said to Jesus, “Rabbi, look! The fig tree you cursed has withered!”
22 “Have faith in God,” Jesus answered. 23“Truly#11:22,23 Some early manuscripts “If you have faith in God,” Jesus answered, 23 “truly I tell you, if anyone says to this mountain, ‘Go, throw yourself into the sea,’ and does not doubt in their heart but believes that what they say will happen, it will be done for them. 24Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours. 25And when you stand praying, if you hold anything against anyone, forgive them, so that your Father in heaven may forgive you your sins.” [26]#11:26 Some manuscripts include here words similar to Matt. 6:15.
The Authority of Jesus Questioned
27They arrived again in Jerusalem, and while Jesus was walking in the temple courts, the chief priests, the teachers of the law and the elders came to him. 28“By what authority are you doing these things?” they asked. “And who gave you authority to do this?”
29Jesus replied, “I will ask you one question. Answer me, and I will tell you by what authority I am doing these things. 30John’s baptism—was it from heaven, or of human origin? Tell me!”
31They discussed it among themselves and said, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ he will ask, ‘Then why didn’t you believe him?’ 32But if we say, ‘Of human origin’ …” (They feared the people, for everyone held that John really was a prophet.)
33So they answered Jesus, “We don’t know.”
Jesus said, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I am doing these things.”
